Star Trek Just Ruined Its Best Alien Race, And The Explanation Makes No Sense
By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

The fourth episode of Starfleet Academy, “Vox In Excelsio,” made some huge changes to the most famous alien race in all of Star Trek: The Klingons. The biggest change (and beware some spoilers the size of a warp core, this is your only warning!) is that the Klingon homeworld of Qu’onos has been completely destroyed because the Burn (introduced back in Discovery, Season 3) caused all of the planet’s dilithium reactors to explode. However, based on everything we know about dilithium from over 60 years of franchise history, this should have been completely impossible!
First, some context: since the days of Star Trek: The Original Series, we’ve seen starships traveling the galaxy thanks to the dilithium crystals that power their warp cores. After the crew of the USS Discovery jumped to the 32nd century, they discovered that both interstellar travel and the Federation had been devastated by an event called the Burn. The Burn caused dilithium throughout the galaxy to go inert, and this caused countless starships to explode because these crystals regulate the matter/antimatter reaction necessary to achieve warp speed.
Avoiding The Mistakes Of The Future, Today

Once the crystals went inert, the matter and antimatter collided in any ship with an active warp drive. This instantly caused the last thing any Starfleet captain wants to deal with: a warp core breach. Because of this, the Federation is still rebuilding by the end of Star Trek: Discovery, and Starfleet Academy is all about training the next generation of cadets who will make the galaxy a safer place as various planets and space empires continue recovering.
That brings us to the most recent episode of Starfleet Academy, “Vox Excelsius,” in which a reporter casually mentions that the Klingon homeworld of Qo’noS has previously been destroyed by the Burn. How did this work, mechanically speaking? The only explanation we get (aside from a dismissed conspiracy theory that “they blew it up themselves”) is that “the Burn caused dilithium reactors on Qo’noS and other worlds to explode.”
What The Experts Have To Say

At first glance, this probably makes sense. After all, we know that the Burn affected dilithium in a way that made starships throughout the galaxy explode. Dilithium is both mined and stored on various planets, so the reporter’s breezy comment might make you think that the dilithium simply exploded with enough force to either destroy the Klingon homeworld outright or render it completely uninhabitable.
However, the starships destroyed by the Burn were only lost because the dilithium going inert caused instant warp breaches. While Starfleet Academy doesn’t really explain what a “dilithium reactor” is, it’s fair to assume that the Klingon homeworld was not attempting to travel anywhere at warp speed. The reactor is presumably meant to be a power source for Qo’noS, but at no point in Star Trek history has matter/antimatter been used to power anything other than warp drive.
Therefore, it’s only logical (Spock would be so proud) to determine that Paramount ruined the Klingons because the writers forgot how the Burn worked, which was established in the show that Starfleet Academy spun off from. This isn’t a case of the writers forgetting some obscure factoid introduced in The Original Series or even The Next Generation. Instead, they are ignoring a major story element that was introduced just a few years ago, a mistake made even worse by the other logical problems of this bizarre plot point.
Almost All Klingons Died For No Reason

For example, even though the Klingons are canonically stupid, why would they rely on dilithium as a power source? Even if we were to expect the idea (that flies in the face of established lore) that dilithium works as a planetary power source, Discovery previously established that dilithium had started becoming super scarce years before the Burn happened, which is why the Federation was researching alternative methods of achieving warp speed without dilithium crystals. Facing that same dilithium shortage, the Klingons could have easily traded out their dilithium reactors to power planets with fusion or solar power, both of which the Federation was relying on nearly a millennium ago.
Now, before the Star Trek fanboys come for me, I’ll concede that Starfleet Academy might explain all of this away in a future episode. Maybe we’ll get a technobabble explanation as to how dilithium reactors work, or we’ll get an in-universe reason why the Klingons never switched to another, more convenient power source once dilithium got insanely scarce. Heck, we might even get an explanation as to why the Klingons had these reactors on every single planet of their empire, something which seems like it would be overkill for smaller, more remote colonies.
Right now, though, none of this makes any sense, which is effectively bad news for Star Trek as a whole. The writers just ruined the franchise’s most iconic race, and they did so with a plot point that proves even they weren’t watching Discovery. You should act accordingly, when this kind of narrative stupidity causes you to unsubscribe from Paramount+, don’t forget to write in “exploding warp reactors” as the reason you are leaving.
Don’t think the Skydance Corporation will believe it? Trust me: if they bought Paramount, these guys will buy anything.

Launches Military Strikes Against Iran With Israel
Published
The United States and Israel have officially attacked Iran … as President Trump announced the American and Israeli armed forces have begun “major combat missions” on the country.
Trump uploaded a video message online late Friday night, telling the world his objective is to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian régime — a vicious group of very hard, terrible people.”
The prez also said Iran has waged a 47-year campaign of “bloodshed and mass murder” against the United States and its allies. Trump noted he would never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon despite the country’s efforts to rebuild its nuclear program after the U.S. destroyed it last summer.

Will Bridgerton Recast Phoebe Dynevor, Rege-Jean Page After Long Absence?
Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell broke her silence about if Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page are at risk of being recast.
“We are not interested in recasting the characters,” Brownell told Variety on Thursday, February 26. “I think it would feel like a disservice to everything Regé and Phoebe set up in season 1, and all the beautiful work they put into those characters.”
Brownell didn’t rule out an onscreen return for them.
“We would love to potentially have them back at some point, but I think, logistically, we want to make sure we bring them back when we have something really meaty for them,” she continued. “And to have them come back to say a line at a funeral [in season 4] and just prove that they were there, it wouldn’t feel right for many reasons.”
She concluded: “So I think in my mind, the camera doesn’t capture everything. They’re hypothetically there [this season] — it’s television. But we would love to find a time to bring everyone back at some point in the future.”
Bridgerton, which is based on the book series written by Julia Quinn, follows the members of the wealthy Bridgerton family as they search for love in 19th century London. Season 1 focused on Daphne Bridgerton’s (Dynevor) unexpected connection with Simon Basset (Page).
After the show premiered, viewers fell in love with Page, 38, and his character, which made his departure that much more shocking. Netflix announced in April 2021 that Page would not be reprising his role as the Duke of Hastings despite plans for Daphne to appear in future seasons.
That same month, Page noted that Simon had always been pitched to him as a condensed role, telling Variety, “It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end — give us a year. [I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit, and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”
Page stood by his decision even though fans have publicly voiced their disappointment about not getting to see more of Simon’s story. Season 2 still featured several appearances from Daphne, who was accompanied by her and Simon’s son, Auggie.
However, Dynevor, 30, later confirmed her own exit from the series, which didn’t appear to be her choice. “Sadly [I’m] not in season 3. Potentially in the future. But season 3, I’m just excited to watch as a viewer,” she told Screen Rant in January 2023 about not being called back to film.
Other former Bridgerton leads, including Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley, also had very minimal screen time since their seasons came to an end.
Bridgerton is currently streaming on Netflix.

Ridley Scott’s Ahead-of-Its-Time War Movie Returns 3 Decades After Dividing Critics
Perhaps Ridley Scott‘s greatest impact on the landscape of cinema has been on sci-fi, with his genre-defining masterpieces Alien and Blade Runner. That’s not to dismiss what the four-time Oscar nominee has accomplished outside the genre, though. He conquered the historical epic with his classic film Gladiator and created a gripping war movie with 2001’s Black Hawk Down. His ideas aren’t always successful, but he’s consistently managed to marry large-scale, ambitious thrills with deeper themes of identity, corporate greed, and political corruption.
In 1997, Scott would apply this same approach to the Demi Moore-led war action thriller, G.I. Jane. The film tells the fictional story of Lieutenant Jordan O’Neill, a topographical analyst who is suddenly selected to be the first woman to train in a special forces program akin to the U.S. Navy SEALs. Facing extreme sexism in a gruelling program she was set up to fail, she strives under her unfairly punishing commander, John James Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen), to break her limits and shatter the expectations placed on her by the institution around her. Critics and audiences were divided about the result, and it was met with a more middling $98.4 million box office against a budget of $50 million, yet it has since gotten a bit more love by some as a flawed film that was still ahead of its time in its message. Moore herself has been a vocal defender of the story for how it challenged gender norms, telling Vanity Fair in 2024, “I think the film really holds up. I hear it a lot from people. I think that Ridley made a really thoughtful, intelligent film that really tackled the subject matter.”
Now, nearly three decades later, Peacock is giving subscribers a chance to revisit the film and judge it on its merits. G.I. Jane is due to arrive on the platform on March 1, alongside a wide range of big new additions, including Fight Club, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Beekeeper, and Friday the 13th. In addition to Moore and Mortensen, Scott’s film also featured the talents of, among others, Jason Beghe, Scott Wilson, Anne Bancroft, Morris Chestnut, and Lucinda Jenney. Riddick and The Fugitive scribe David Twohy penned the script with Danielle Alexandra, who wrote the story.
Demi Moore and Ridley Scott Will Be Back in Theaters in 2026
Moore was last seen on the big screen in 2024 with The Substance, an instant horror classic that nearly won the actress her first Oscar and powerfully tackled the pressures women face about their bodies, particularly as they grow older. After returning to Landman for Season 2 last year, though, she’ll be back in theaters in three months on May 22 with Boots Riley‘s latest film, I Love Boosters. Scott also has a busy year ahead, with his new film, The Dog Stars, led by Jacob Elordi, set to release on August 28. Adapted from Peter Heller‘s novel, the film is set in the aftermath of a deadly pandemic that has devastated humanity, as a pilot named Hig (Elordi) and his gruff marine companion (Josh Brolin) live in relative isolation, until a mysterious transmission gives them hope of finding other survivors.
G.I. Jane arrives on Peacock on March 1. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on all the biggest films coming to and leaving streaming throughout the year.

The View’ Guest Host Pulls Back the Curtains on Workings of Show
While “The View” may look polished on screen, so much more is going on behind the scenes, and guest co-host Sara Eisen is spilling.
With Alyssa Farah Griffin out on maternity leave, the Hot Topics table has welcomed a rotation of substitutes, including Eisen.
The “Squawk on the Street” anchor is now detailing her experience on the broadcast, gushing about how seamless the show appears even though it is raw and unscripted.

Sara Eisen Details Inner Workings of ‘The View’
On her second day subbing in for Griffin, Eisen shared insight on what it is like at the table, admitting it’s not exactly what she expected as a longtime viewer.
When Joy Behar asked whether she was enjoying herself, the CNBC anchor didn’t hesitate to share. “First of all, you guys are all wonderful and gracious. It’s a pleasure to be here, as someone who’s watched the show forever,” the 41-year-old said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Eisen described the opportunity as a “treat,” saying it allowed her to speak freely about a range of topics. Sunny Hostin then asked whether the reality of the show matched Eisen’s expectations.

“I love how spontaneous it is and how authentic it is,” the business journalist responded. “And how we’re prepared and we’re read-in, but not scripted. It looks very perfect when you watch it on TV, but anything can happen out here.”
Eisen admired her colleague’s ability to perform without earpieces, which sparked a playful jab from Ana Navarro: “Even when Joy does get cued in her ear, she just ignores it.”
Eisen isn’t the only guest co-host to step in during Griffin’s absence. Savannah Chrisley also joined the panel and spoke about her time on the show, thanking the panel for giving her a platform to share differing opinions.

Savannah Chrisley Accused Of Auditioning For A Political Position

Chrisley’s brief stint on the table did not go without backlash. As The Blast reported, the February 19 episode featured Chrisley, Hostin, and Whoopi Goldberg in an argument over Donald Trump.
Goldberg argued that the president has sent “mixed messages” during Black History Month, citing his stance on DEI initiatives and past racist actions.
However, Chrisley countered her, saying she had personally seen Trump’s positive side and finds it hard to see people call him “racist.” She then pointed out Trump’s support of a longtime Black employee.
Hostin pushed back, saying Trump’s behavior still amounted to racism, while Goldberg highlighted examples such as Trump sharing offensive posts about Barack and Michele Obama.

Chrisley’s defense of the U.S. leader drew criticism from fans, and one even accused her of “auditioning for the White House press secretary.”

Jenny McCarthy Rejects The Idea of Returning To The Hot Topics Table

With Chrisley’s guest-host run now over, more familiar faces, including former co-host Abby Huntsman, are expected to fill in for Griffin in the months to come. However, one thing is for sure: past panelist Jenny McCarthy won’t be reclaiming a seat at the table.
McCarthy appeared on the daytime talk show from 2013 to 2014, but she has firmly ruled out ever returning, even after producers reportedly reached out.
During an appearance on “The Katie Miller Podcast” last month, McCarthy reflected candidly on her experience, admitting it was far from positive.
As The Blast reported, McCarthy explained that producers initially hired her to provide light-hearted commentary. However, they quickly shifted toward political discussions, which left her feeling unprepared at the time.
McCarthy added that she was asked to return for the reunion, but her reaction was, “over her dead body.”

Sherri Shepherd Backs Jenny McCarthy’s Reflection, Saying She Was In A Similar Situation

After McCarthy recounted her past stint with the long-running ABC show, her ex-colleague Sherri Shepherd echoed the same account.
According to The Blast, Shepherd revealed that the showrunners hired her because they wanted someone “relatable.”
However, the order of the day soon turned to political debates, which Shepherd said was challenging given her strict upbringing. At one point, she was advised to read to get more insight into the political world.
Whoopi Goldberg Shares Reason For Her Absence On ‘The View’

Meanwhile, Griffin isn’t the only permanent co-host to take a break from the show recently. Whoopi Goldberg was off the panel from November 17 until her return on December 1 last year.
Per The Blast, Goldberg resumed with shared details about her hiatus, revealing she was filming a soap opera in Italy.
She joked with Ana Navarro about forgetting English and described the experience of working in a different language and country as “really interesting.”
Goldberg noted she kept her colleagues updated with videos from Naples, where it rained constantly.
