‘Stranger Things’ Creators Reveal the Fate of Their Upcoming Spin-Off Before Their Move to Paramount
With Stranger Things Season 5 fast approaching, the Duffer Brothers recently talked about what comes next once this Netflix hit comes to an end. According to the filmmakers, the spin-off series that had been in the works since 2022 just got an update at Netflix, revealing it’s now moving forward and teasing what it could be about. It turns out the plot for the spin-off was perfectly predicted by Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard.
In a recent interview, the Duffer Brothers confirmed that their Stranger Things spin-off will move forward with the streaming giant and will be an anthology, as Wolfhard had guessed in a separate interview back in August. At the moment, a team has been assembled to bring this project to life, and the filmmakers plan to bring out more information as it progresses. Additionally, Netflix has shown excitement for the project now that it’s officially underway.
“We are moving forward with it. Netflix, they finally know what it is. We held it. They were so frustrated. We just would not tell them. Finn [Wolfhard] guessed what it was. So he was the only one who knew… Now everybody at Netflix knows. They’re very excited behind it there. I’m really excited about the team we’ve assembled that I can’t talk about without potentially getting into trouble, but we’ll put out more information soon. We’re trying to get it to go pretty quickly. So hopefully it’s gonna happen soon.”
What Do We Know About the ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-Off?
The Stranger Things spin-off has been in the works since 2022, and an official title, release date, and cast have yet to be revealed. Previously, the Duffer Brothers told Collider’s Steve Weintraub that they wanted to “pass the baton” to someone else. But based on the recent announcement, the filmmakers are still tied to the project.
Back in August, Wolfhard predicted that the Stranger Things spin-off would be an anthology, similar to Twin Peaks. He guessed that the show would probably take place in a “similar or same universe,” but with a different tone, and that each episode would be set in various locations and wouldn’t acknowledge the main characters or Hawkins.
“Like David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks.’ Sort of an anthology and different tones but similar universe or same universe. I think set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down. Don’t even talk about Hawkins. Don’t have any mention of our characters. They were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I’m sure they do, and I’m sure it will happen, but there’s nothing official. I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere. If there was one in Hawkins, there’s one in Russia. Where else could they be?”
This idea of an anthology was later mentioned by the filmmakers back in October, stating that they don’t want to follow the Star Wars approach but would make the spin-off stick to its young sci-fi fantasy roots, without making the lore of the Upside Down more convoluted, and wouldn’t feature any of the recognizable faces from the Netflix sci-fi hit.
“They’re going to live in a bit of a different world. There’s going to be connective tissue, but you’re almost anthologizing in a way. Because we’re not Star Wars. We can’t be like, ‘Oh, now we’re on this planet.’”
