Right now, fans are processing the death of Starfleet Academy, and many are having trouble processing their feelings. Fortunately, Star Trek is a franchise that has offered many poignant thoughts on death that we can all learn from.

Perhaps the most powerful lesson came after Captain Kirk destroyed the Enterprise in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, keeping it from being captured by Klingons. “My God, Bones, what have I done?” Kirk asked. To this, the good doctor offered an ironic reply: “What you always do, turn death into a fighting chance to live.”

The “death” of Kirk’s beloved ship gave the gift of life to its captain and crew. It also taught a lesson about mortality that Starfleet Academy fans could really benefit from.

Much like Kirk watching his starship burn, the fandom has largely been focusing on the death of something they really loved. But just like the Enterprise, this new spinoff may have died for a very specific purpose. That purpose? To give Star Trek itself a fighting chance to live!

The Man Behind The Miss

How could the death of Starfleet Academy help Star Trek to live? It all has to do with one of the most infamous figures in the franchise: Alex Kurtzman. He has been the executive producer for the entirety of the NuTrek era, helping to bring new shows to life with his production company, Secret Hideout.

When Star Trek: Discovery premiered, fans were hopeful that Kurtzman would be able to usher this venerable franchise into the modern age of TV storytelling. Now, however, it’s clear that he is the albatross around this franchise’s neck, but one that Paramount may finally be ready to remove.

In terms of shows getting canceled (more on this soon), it’s clear that Alex Kurtzman’s NuTrek era has been a failure. There are moments of greatness across various episodes, and certain series (like Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks) have been enjoyed. But even these less-hated shows keep getting the axe, proving that Kurtzman’s vision for Star Trek has been a failure. Now, though, the early cancellation of Starfleet Academy (Kurtzman is co-showrunner) may cause Paramount to finally give this man the boot and put someone new in charge of Star Trek.

The Ultimate Silver Lining

Why would the cancellation of Starfleet Academy get Paramount to let Alex Kurtzman go? For one thing, his contract is up at the end of 2026. So, this isn’t even a matter of the network firing the man; instead, they just have to figure out whether or not to renew his contract.

Kurtzman’s future at Paramount already looked pretty sketchy during the merger with Skydance. Now, with the Warner Bros. acquisition coming up, there will be even more major changes to film and television leadership. In the wake of such seismic shifts, it is common for execs to seek out new creatives rather than rely on the old guard.

That’s especially true when the creative has a horrific track record. Both Discovery and Lower Decks were canceled early, and Paramount decided to end Strange New Worlds after Season 5, which will have only half as many episodes. Prodigy left Paramount+ after Season 1, and after airing Season 2 on Netflix, it was never renewed.

Now, Starfleet Academy (a show intended to last four seasons) has been canceled after the end of its first season. Count’em up, people: Alex Kurtzman has overseen five Star Trek shows that were canceled early, plus Section 31, the lowest-rated movie in the entire franchise.

Namecalling As Cover For Bad Writing

Since the beginning of the NuTrek era, there has been discourse about how “woke” these shows are, particularly among YouTubers. Those early right-wing attacks on Discovery accidentally created eternal cover for NuTrek defenders because they could now dismiss any legitimate criticisms of these shows as the mindless rantings of someone with hateful politics.

If you say you hate overly emotional storytelling (a la the eternally crying Michael Burnham), you’re told you just hate women. If you complain about how Starfleet Academy treated the Klingons, you’re told that you must be homophobic. If you dislike the on-the-nose political storytelling of Picard (especially Season 2), you are told you worship Trump, and so on.

Any criticism of NuTrek suddenly became wrongthink and proof that you didn’t understand the franchise’s progressive ideals. 

The Numbers Don’t Lie

But TV is a numbers game, and shows succeed or fail based on how many people watch them. Paramount (home, may I remind you, of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars) doesn’t care about culture wars; they care about clicks.

If all of Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek shows had been hits, they would have correspondingly huge audiences. While Paramount has always been cagey about streaming numbers, it’s clear that most of NuTrek isn’t generating enough views to justify the huge budgets for each episode. Starfleet Academy wasn’t canceled because it was woke: it was canceled because there just weren’t enough people watching.

Bon Voyage, Alex Kurtzman!

Obviously, I can’t predict exactly what Paramount will do; there’s a chance Alex Kurtzman will land on his feet, and the slop era of this franchise will keep on Trekkin’. But new CEO David Ellison has stated that he wants to make Star Trek a priority, and he likely wants to make a big splash ahead of this sci-fi juggernaut’s 60th anniversary. With any luck, that means he will shoot Kurtzman’s contract out the nearest airlock and let someone with a bit more talent sit in the captain’s chair.

As for Starfleet Academy, it’s sad to see the show go. I mean that, truly: I’m a hater who warmed to the show over time, and I enjoyed seeing it start to reach for its full potential by the end of Season 1. But like Kirk’s Enterprise, this is not a show that died in vain. With Alex Kurtzman’s latest being yet another complete failure, the powers that be might finally replace him with someone with more knowledge of and passion for the franchise. Such a creative could do far more than just make a few great shows: they might just save Star Trek as we know it.

Unless you’re a Hollywood insider, the name Barry Caldwell might not mean that much to you until now. He was a prolific animator who died on March 24, 2026. His work, however, is not only famous but extremely beloved. It is fair to say that he was a cornerstone to the childhood of a huge portion of the American population.

His career animating very recognizable cartoons started in 1980 with storyboard work on Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and it wasn’t long before he was drawing for episodes of the classic Tom and Jerry. In 1983, he was a storyboard artist for 49 episodes of the iconic after-school cartoon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. In 1986, less than a decade after starting his career, he was put in charge as director of My Little Pony: The Movie, an ambitious project that featured numerous celebrity voice actors and elevated the Hasbro characters from cartoon shorts to the big screen. He also spent most of the late 80s working on Alvin and the Chipmunks for 65 episodes and The Smurfs for 16 episodes.

The 1990s added even more iconic cartoons to his resume, cartoons watched back then by adults and kids alike and still enjoyed to this day by the adults who grew up watching them as kids. His work for the beloved Warner Brothers cartoons started with Tiny Toon Adventures, but went on through the whole decade with pivotal work on Animaniacs that led to the spin-off, Pinky and the Brain.

For Y2K, he pivoted to more feature films, starting with The Tigger Movie. He then directed Osmosis Jones, the germy story about a white blood cell who teams up with a cold pill to fight a virus. He didn’t stop making TV episodes, though, and was eventually tapped by Disney once again to contribute to the production of Kim Possible. This ushered in a new era of memorable work from Caldwell, including Mulan II. He would continue making and revisiting all his titles throughout the rest of his career: cartoons from Tom and Jerry, from Looney Tunes, from Scooby Doo, and from various Disney properties.

It is also notable that Caldwell was a Black artist during a time when organic diversity in entertainment was only beginning to emerge. The 1970s featured the Blaxploitation genre of movies and important comic voices like Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby; Cosby created Fat Albert, where Caldwell got his start.

Throughout the 1980s, the role of Black people in entertainment expanded to a point of organic diversity, with names like Michael Jackson, Eddie Murphy, and Oprah Winfrey paving the way for other public-facing Black entertainers. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Barry Caldwell was joining these names with cartoons that carry as massive cultural significance as any of them.

Whether we knew it or not, Barry Caldwell influenced four generations of children through his cartoons, with his latest artwork drawn for Disney in 2024. His death leaves behind a legacy of classic animation enjoyed by both its target youth audience and their adult counterparts, allowing everyone to laugh and have fun together. What a beautiful legacy for an artist to leave behind. RIP.

YouTubers Damien and Biannca Prince have been enjoying life with their new addition, making them a family of seven. After keeping the past month mostly private, they’ve officially revealed their baby girl’s name and shared the first look at her.

Biannca And Damien Prince Reveal Their Baby Girl’s Name

Before the arrival of Damien and Biannca’s fifth bundle of joy, the family carefully chose a name. From Bella to Paisley, they spun a wheel to narrow down their options. In the end, they decided to keep the name private until after her birth.

On Sunday, the couple shared a video holding their baby girl and revealing her name. They announced her name is Gianna Clarke Prince, but added that they love to call her Gigi or Gia. While explaining the meaning, Biannca opened up about her past miscarriage and emotions.

She said, “Gianna means ‘God is gracious.’ I wanted something that reflects God is great, that God has the last say, and that God is still good. She is our rainbow baby and means the world to me and all of us. When I heard ‘God is gracious,’ I just thought it was so beautiful.”

Clarke comes from Biannca’s father’s middle name, with an added “e” for a feminine touch. She got emotional as she spoke about her stepfather. She shared that he is not her biological father, but he stepped up, signed her birth certificate, and gave her his last name. Even after she learned that they were not biologically related, she said, he never treated her differently. She added that he still checks on her to this day, unlike her biological father.

To close the video, the couple kissed their baby girl and gave supporters a first look. They also asked viewers who they think the baby looks like.

Following the big reveal, the couple took to Instagram to share photos from Gianna’s first photoshoot. Biannca shared a picture holding her in a pink wrap. Her caption read, “Sweet rainbow baby, you are everything I prayed for. This past month has been full of love. I’m thankful for you every day, Gigi Clarke.”

Damien shared his own set of photos while holding his baby girl. He wrote, “Welcome to the world, baby girl @giannaclarkeprince.” Over on Gianna’s account, more photos and videos of their baby girl were shared.

Marvel Studios hasn’t officially said much about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but after the first trailer dropped, fans are already convinced it’s hiding some major reveals.

From a possible Man-Spider transformation to the long-rumored arrival of the X-Men, the internet is breaking down every frame for clues. While nothing has been confirmed, several theories have quickly gained traction and could hint at where the MCU is heading next.

A Darker Peter Parker Has Fans Thinking “Man-Spider”

One of the biggest talking points from the trailer is the noticeably darker tone surrounding Peter Parker.

Quick shots appear to show:

• A more aggressive Spider-Man

• Subtle physical changes in his appearance

• A loss of control over his powers

That has led many fans to speculate Marvel could be adapting elements of the “Man-Spider” storyline, where Peter undergoes a disturbing mutation tied to his spider abilities.

In Marvel Comics, the Man-Spider arc has been explored in several forms, often depicting Peter losing control as his powers evolve beyond what he can manage. While the MCU has never tackled this concept directly, the trailer’s tone suggests something more physical and unstable could be happening to him.

Symbiote Rumors Are Back Again

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Spider-Man theory cycle without talk of the black suit.

Following the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where a fragment of the Venom symbiote was left behind in the MCU, fans have long expected that storyline to pay off. The Brand New Day trailer has only added fuel to that fire.

Some viewers believe the darker visuals and Peter’s behavior could hint at early symbiote influence. Others think Marvel may combine elements of the symbiote storyline with a Man-Spider-style mutation, creating a new hybrid take on Spider-Man’s transformation.

While there’s no direct confirmation of Venom appearing, the groundwork has clearly been laid.

Sadie Sink’s Role Is Already a Mystery

Another major topic of discussion is Sadie Sink’s casting.

Marvel has yet to reveal who she’s playing, but that hasn’t stopped speculation from running wild. The most popular theory right now is that Sink could be portraying Jean Grey, which would mark a massive step toward introducing mutants into the MCU.

The idea has gained traction online, especially as Marvel continues to build toward a post-Secret Wars future that likely includes the X-Men.

However, not everyone is convinced.

Other theories suggest she could be:

• Firestar

• A version of Mary Jane Watson

• A completely original MCU character

• Or another lesser-known Marvel figure being reimagined

At this point, her role remains one of the film’s biggest mysteries.

A Possible Turning Point for the MCU

If even part of these theories prove true, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be more than just another Spider-Man sequel.

The film appears to pick up with Peter completely isolated following the events of No Way Home, where the world forgot his identity. That emotional reset creates the perfect setup for a darker, more vulnerable version of the character.

It also opens the door for larger changes in the MCU, whether that’s the introduction of the symbiote storyline, a new phase of Spider-Man’s evolution, or even the early stages of mutant integration.

Nothing Is Confirmed… But That Hasn’t Stopped Fans

As with most Marvel trailers, it’s important to note that none of these theories have been confirmed.

Still, the reaction online shows just how much anticipation is building around Brand New Day. Whether it delivers on these ideas or takes things in a completely different direction, one thing is clear:

Monday, March 30th: Season 2, Episode 59

Monday, March 30th is season 2, episode 59 of BTG. And we’ve got Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne (Arielle Prepetit) really upset and Ashley Morgan (Jen Jacob) is there for her. She’s pushing Naomi to come clean about her BRCA status, but the timing’s wrong. And she confides in Ashley. She just really wants Jacob Hawthorne (Jibre Hordges) home and all the danger over and done with.

Little does Ashley know that her man Grayson Perez (Jordie Vilasuso) is neck deep in the same danger, plus the real risk of going to prison. Plus, their boss, Dr. Lia Whitmore (Cecelia Specht), wants Grayson to stick his neck out more by poking around in Dana ‘Leslie’ Thomas‘s (Trisha Mann-Grant) free clinic.

Beyond the Gates Spoilers: Kat Rages

Kat Richardson (Colby Muhammad) gets into Lynette Wise’s (Dominique Madison) face, and probably it’s about Tomas “Tom” Hernandez (Alex Alegria). He may confide in Kat more that he was trying to get info on Lynette, and now she and Hayley are making him look bad to Big Bill Hamilton. Hayley is done trying to poison Bill for now and instead tries to poison her hubby against Tomas. Hayley knows if Tomas keeps digging into Lynette, it’ll lead right back to her and reveal her as a con woman. And Hayley could lose everything. And Lynette is not making things easy.

This week, Tomas tells Bill, you know, I didn’t do this, but Bill says, “My wife says otherwise, are you calling her a liar?” And of course, Tomas has to tell Bill, “No, no, of course not.” But really, yes. I think Tomas suspects Hayley is lying and is up to something with Lynette. I think he’s going to keep on digging.

Smitty and Jacob are stunned by where a new lead in the red market plasma case takes them. I wonder if Grayson will finally admit he’s being pressured by Chief of Staff Lia. Of course, I suspect that Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom) is in on this as well with Randy Parker (Maurice P. Kerry) also possibly tied to it.

Tuesday, March 31st: Season 2, Episode 60

Tuesday, March 31st on Beyond the Gates is season 2, episode 60. And Bill wants some assistance from Joey. And I wonder if Bill’s going to ask Joey to look into little Lynette after Tomas swears that he wasn’t doing what Hayley said he was. Bill’s had a bad feeling about Lynette. He thought she was on the grift all along. And Joey already knows Hayley is shady as heck and a liar. So if Joey asked Randy to look into Lynette, that could get twisted really fast.

Tomas is holding on to a secret. And I wonder if he’s figured out Hayley’s tied to Lynette and keeping it in his back pocket until he needs to play that card.

Andre Richardson (Sean Freeman) and Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley) try something they have not before. Maybe in the bedroom or maybe something more like axe throwing or an escape room.

Beyond the Gates Spoilers: Ted Shocks Shanice

Chelsea Hamilton (RhonniRose Mantilla) upsets Kat, but she doesn’t mean to. And I wonder if she’s going to tell Chelsea about what’s going on with Tomas at work. And Chelsea may wonder if Tomas is not so innocent and maybe was actually flirting with Lynette.

Dr. Ted Richardson (Keith D. Robinson) shocks Shanice Johnson (Ernestine Johnson) when some words fall out of his mouth. Maybe. And I wonder if Ted’s going to up and say, “I love you.” He does seem to be all up in his feels about Shanice. And since Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson (Daphnee Duplaix) is okay with what’s going on, I mean, why not go for it if that’s what he feels? He does seem very smitten.

Wednesday, April 1st: Season 2, Episode 61

Wednesday, April 1st on Beyond the Gates, we’ve got season two, episode 61. And spoilers say that Carlton Fitzgerald (Robert Christopher Riley) decides to mix it up with Joey during their double date with them, Vanessa McBride (Lauren Buglioli) and Nicole. So, they’re out at Uptown.

Vanessa’s looking upset, and Joey slaps back at Carlton, saying, “Oh, how I wish I could be one of you self-righteous do-gooders.” This seems to be directed towards both Nicole and Carlton. And Joey says, “Politicians and all those dead bodies, literally.” And of course, Nicole and Carlton are both looking annoyed, but it looks like he started it, not Joey.

Eva Thomas Richardson (Ambyr Michelle) heads over to Joey’s casino to vent about something. And it must be about the free clinic that he’s co-funding with her mom. And I wonder if Joey only agreed to do this with Leslie to open up a new avenue for plasma sources for him and Lia to resell and get in good with Vanessa by throwing that plaque up there about Dr. Doug McBride (Jason Graham).

Donnell McBride (Alex Cheeks) opens up to Kat and I wonder if it’s about Anita Dupree‘s (Tamara Tunie) health crisis, the Cotillion, or some other family matters.

One of Hayley’s lies from the past is still bothering Naomi, who’s holding it over her head. But honestly, which lie? Hayley has told so many from the time she first wormed her way into their family, ruined Dani and Bill’s marriage, and stole him away.

Thursday, April 2nd: Season 2, Episode 62

Thursday, April 2nd is season 2, episode 62 of Beyond the Gates. And we’ve got Tomas at a crossroads in his career because of what Hayley has done. And he’s got to decide what to do. And I wonder if Kat may intervene and chew Bill a new one for not believing Tomas when Bill knows that Hayley has a shady lying past because of how they got together. Of course, if Kat goes to Bill, he might think Tomas has been talking out of school and it could actually make things worse.

Vanessa takes Joey’s side. She’s all in with him. And it definitely looks like Carlton was the one who provoked Joey. He didn’t start it, but he finished it. And if Nicole presses her, I feel that Vanessa is going to say that she’s with Joey, period.

Beyond the Gates Spoilers: Nicole’s Dilemma

Like it or not, Nicole is really annoyed with Carlton. And it is probably about how he behaves on their double date with Joey because Carlton didn’t need to start something with Nicole’s best friend’s guy, but Carlton’s going to do Carlton. And guess what? Looks like because of what he did, Nicole’s going to go over and do Dr. Kyle Rollins (Greg Vaughn).

So, it seems that Nicole heads over to Kyle’s place and she may use the key he gave her to slip into his bed after she walks out on Carlton. Next week, Nicole is in bed with Kyle at his place. And looks like he wakes up to find Nicole there. And Kyle says, “If this is a dream, my subconscious has great taste.” And they are getting frisky.

Lynette extorts Hayley and she tells Lynette, “You’re putting me in a difficult position,” but Lynette doesn’t care. And she claps back with the threat that she will blow Hayley’s plan sky high. You cannot negotiate with terrorists. And that’s what Lynette is. And I wonder at what point that Hayley is going to poison Lynette or ask Randy to get rid of his boo.

Bill talks to Dani about the future. Dani knows Bill is hitting the brakes on baby making with Hayley, but is Bill going to tell Dani he’s thinking of calling it quits on his marriage?

Friday, April 3rd: Season 2, Episode 63

Friday, April 3rd on Beyond the Gates, it’s season 2, episode 63. And fresh off taking Kyle to bed, Nicole takes Kyle to brunch with the Duprees at Fairmont Crest Country Club for Easter. Not only is the Easter Bunny there, but a special guest star. I also wonder if Carlton is going to show up and see Kyle there and realize that he is distinctly in second place in the race to win Nicole’s heart and falling back fast.

Anita is in a glorious silver wig. She’s looking healthy and introduces to everybody at the country club that she is very pleased to welcome Jennifer Holliday who is performing as an Easter treat. So, we’re going to get some songs on Friday.

Ted has some advice for Carlton, who is totally blowing it with Nicole. I mean, Carlton thought he was going to slide in there and wife her up, and Nicole’s not having it. She doesn’t like Carlton being heavy-handed all the time, and Kyle is looking like a much more appealing option.

Beyond the Gates Spoilers: Anita Claps Back

Anita claps back on nasty Anastasia Belleclaire (Timeca Seretti) and lets her know her place. And it looks like Bill and Hayley are also at Fairmont Crest because she is feeling self-conscious now that Bill is back in good with the Duprees. So good that he is probably going to be the co-executor of Anita’s will. Meanwhile, the whole family still hates Hayley and rightly so.

Somebody threatens Grayson. It may be his horrible boss at work and at the plasma ring, Lia. She’s pushing him to recruit Derek Baldwin (Ben Gavin), but Grayson already told Lia that’s not going to happen for a lot of reasons, but she’s not going to listen. Or it could be from Jacob, who is pressing Grayson for more info on the higher-ups and isn’t going to let Grayson keep lying and saying he doesn’t know what’s what.

Also, Naomi finds a way to sneak some time with her hubby, Jacob.

Brittany Renner was seemingly cutting her son’s father, PJ Washington, a lil’ slack while addressing one of his fans. Then his wife, Alisah Chanel, stepped into the comment section. In response, Renner hopped in her petty bag, sending a message to Alisah loaded with shade and a co-parenting reminder for their “BD.” Here’s how it all unfolded in The Shade Room’s comment section!

Was Brittany Renner Defending Her Son’s Father? 

On Monday (March 30), The Shade Room reposted a comment directed at Brittany Renner. In it, an Instagram user asked her to “take PJ back,” adding: “His game has completely fallen off. Sincerely, a Mavs fan.” For context, Washington plays for the Dallas Mavericks and reportedly signed a $90 million contract extension last September. Brittany wrote back, “Not too much on my BD na.” 

Renner’s comment appeared to be lighthearted, a major switch from the energy she’s previously publicly directed at her son’s dad. Days before news of his Mavs contract extension, a video surfaced of Brittany and her mother in a heated exchange with PJ and his wife, Alisah Chanel.
