'The Gentlemen' Star's Underrated Dystopian Sci-Fi Adaptation Is an Unlikely Hit

In 2025, many high-profile movies will be celebrating their tenth anniversary. From Yorgos Lanthimos‘ typically mind-bending The Lobster and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Oscar-winning performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s The Revenant to George Miller‘s genre-defining Mad Max: Fury Road and Robert Eggers‘ masterful feature directorial debut The Witch, theater-goers truly were blessed with quality a decade ago. However, there are other titles now somewhat lost to time that are also worth celebrating, with one even surprisingly hitting the iTunes charts at the time of writing.

That movie is Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, the second installment in The Maze Runner trilogy based on James Dashner’s best-selling novels. Despite the iTunes ranks currently featuring some of the biggest new releases of 2025, The Scorch Trials has managed to quietly creep onto the streaming charts and remind viewers of this possibly underrated dystopian sci-fi adaptation. With just 47% from critics and 54% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film admittedly features a drop in quality from the previous outing, but still deserves much more credit than it received. If you’d like to make your own mind up and haven’t yet seen The Scorch Trials, a synopsis reads:

“Transported to a remote fortified outpost, Thomas and his fellow teenage Gladers find themselves in trouble after uncovering a diabolical plot from the mysterious and powerful organization WCKD. With help from a new ally, the Gladers stage a daring escape into the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with dangerous obstacles and crawling with the virus-infected Cranks. The Gladers only hope may be to find the Right Hand, a group of resistance fighters who can help them battle WCKD.”

Led by Dylan O’Brien, the Maze Runner trilogy was packed with plenty of young acting talent. Among them was Kaya Scodelario, just two years removed from her final appearance as Effy in her breakout hit Skins. Today, Scodelario is better known for portraying Susie in Netflix’s series The Gentlemen from creator Guy Ritchie. Alongside Theo James, Scodelario produced one of the show’s defining performances and was a huge factor in its success and renewal. Although an exact date has yet to be announced, The Gentlemen Season 2 is expected to be released in 2026.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is a hit on iTunes. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest streaming stories.
