The Most Underrated Sci-Fi Film of the Year Is Officially Coming to DVD and Blu-ray
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have been on a white-hot streak with their collaborations, including the acclaimed Poor Things in 2023, which earned the star her second Best Actress nod, and the pitch-black comedy Kinds of Kindness last year. Now, after a disappointing $32 million run at the box office, their underrated sci-fi comedy Bugonia is about to come home sooner than expected on digital platforms and physical media. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the critically acclaimed feature will be available to rent or purchase on demand starting tomorrow, November 25, with the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD coming one month later on December 23.
Bugonia was directed by Lanthimos from a script by The Menu co-writer Will Tracy, which adapted the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet!. It centers on two conspiracy-obsessed cousins who abduct a high-powered CEO, believing she’s secretly part of an alien race out to bring about the destruction of humanity. Trapping her in their basement and prepping their home for the occasion, they come face to face with who they suspect is their foe in hopes of negotiating the withdrawal of all extraterrestrials from Earth. However, the battle of wits between them, through rigorous interrogations, devolves into sheer lunacy and delusion, with unpredictable twists and turns along the way.
Also reuniting with Lanthimos and Stone after Kinds of Kindness is Jesse Plemons as the leader of the two conspiracy theorists, Teddy, while his cousin, Don, is played by newcomer Aidan Delbis. In his 8/10 review, Collider’s Ross Bonaime heaped praise on the trio, hailing Stone and Plemons’s work as “two performances of the year,” while calling Delbis “an essential addition to this story” not found in Save the Green Planet! The cast is rounded out by Stavros Halkias, Marc T. Lewis, Vanessa Eng, and Alicia Silverstone. Despite the lackluster box office performance, Bugonia has earned wide praise from both critics and audiences, earning respective 87% and 84% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers who purchase the home release at participating retailers will get to see how the team came together to craft the wild new film with the behind-the-scenes featurette, “The Birth of the Bees: The Making of Bugonia.”
What’s Next for Stone and Lanthimos After ‘Bugonia’?
After three collaborations in the past three years, the pair of Stone and Lanthimos appears to be pumping the brakes a bit. The director told Collider’s Steve Weintraub earlier this year that he was interested in taking a break after the toll of bringing Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Bugonia to life in such a short period of time. Stone, similarly, has no publicly known upcoming roles to speak of, though that’s not stopping her from producing. Back in April, it was announced that she was attached to Jesse Eisenberg‘s new musical comedy project through her Fruit Tree banner alongside A24 and Topic Studios. The film will be Eisenberg’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning hit, A Real Pain, and will feature music and lyrics penned by the writer-director and a cast that pairs him with Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey, and more. Production got underway in April, though details about a release remain unknown at this time.
Bugonia will be available digitally on November 25 and on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 23.
