Five Things You Can't Do On British Television

Pull down this description for information on all the shows I mention, plus all my references, and some advice if you’re looking to subtitle your videos!

🔤🔤 SUBTITLES 🔤🔤

15% of my viewers watch with subtitles! They’re helpful for folks without headphones, or in loud environments, or who can’t hear well, or who just like subtitles. More people will watch if subtitles are an option.

Before 2020, YouTube had a volunteer community-captions system. Alas, due to spam (and, I suspect, the difficulty of porting it to the new Studio), YouTube turned it off. So your options are:

OPTION 1: DO IT YOURSELF

If your video is one or two people talking, you can add subtitles easily with YouTube’s tools: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2734796 – that’s also possible for more complex videos, but it can be time-consuming.

OPTION 2: PAY A SMALL AMOUNT

If you can afford an editor, you can afford subtitles! They only cost $1-2 per minute of audio.

For simple audio, try Rev: https://www.rev.com/blog/coupon/?ref=tomscott To be clear, that’s an affiliate link: you get $10 of captions free (enough for up to an 8-minute video), and I get a kickback from them. However, my opinions of Rev are mixed. They have downsides, and they may not be the right option for you!

Advantages of Rev:
✅ Extremely fast turnaround
✅ Easy, simple, automated, self-service
✅ Reasonable price

Disadvantages of Rev:
🚫 Rev is a gig-economy company, with everything that entails. In 2019, transcribers raised issues including low pay. https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/25/20979249/rev-recordings-transcriptions-low-pay-complaints-freelance-transcribers
🚫 Accuracy is usually acceptable for clear speech, but not the near-perfect results you’d expect from a more high-end subtitle company.
🚫 They’re limited to their simple, narrow, house style. That isn’t ideal for videos with long sentences or many speakers.

For more complicated audio or for multiple speakers, try Caption+: https://caption.plus — a small company that produces extremely high-quality subtitles for a reasonable price.

Advantages of Caption+:
✅ Exceptional subtitle accuracy.
✅ Hand-tweaked broadcast-standard subtitles that are perfect for accessibility, and which the audience love.
✅ Can use positioning and per-speaker colors, and match other style requests.
✅ Still a reasonable price.

Disadvantages of Caption+:
🚫 Not automated: you’re dealing with a human by email, and paying invoices.

OTHER COMPANIES: I also used 3PlayMedia once, but unfortunately can’t recommend them based on that experience. YouTube also mention ceilo24 and Amara, neither of which I have experience with: https://cielo24.com/ https://amara.org/

📺📺 SHOWS 📺📺

Here’s a list of all the shows mentioned, with links where available. (Where Amazon links are listed, those are affiliate links, where I earn a commission from sales.)

The Demon Headmaster is available on DVD from Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/37Cb68U – and the 2019 revival is available in the UK on BBC iPlayer: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m0009f6n/the-demon-headmaster

Derren Brown: The Events: How To Control The Nation is available for free on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyIilWb9SW0 – although it lacks the live broadcast cut-ins.

The pilot episode of Crisis Command: Could You Run The Country? has been uploaded to YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjkSeuD-8yA – normally I wouldn’t link to an unofficial upload, but the series will likely never be repeated or see a commercial release.

Ghostwatch is available on DVD from Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3kweAgL – I should absolutely have put the ghost in the background of one of my shots here, I regret missing that joke!

The full Ghostwatch continuity announcement is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDSZWpp_Rhw

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire have an entire YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/c/MillionaireUK/videos – and yes, Jeremy Clarkson is the host now, I suspect that’ll surprise a lot of people.

This video has a correction! The final "sixth thing", the rule on advertising breaks, was superseded in 2008 by a different rule that requires that "the integrity of the programme is not prejudiced" and adverts must be placed "where natural breaks occur". The old Code is still on Ofcom's site, and I missed the replacement. Back when Millionaire started, those throws-to-commercial were definitely not allowed, but it's now more ambiguous. You can see all corrections on this channel at https://www.tomscott.com/corrections/

Jeremy Clarkson hits back at cruel troll who tells him to quit eating meat after heart scare

JEREMY Clarkson has taken down a troll online after he was criticised for eating meat.

TV presenter Jeremy, who has recently undergone life-saving heart surgery, responded to the jibe on X in his own inimitable style.

One plant-positive troll berated the star’s carnivorous appetite online.

They wrote. “And now he seems to have had a heart attack and needed surgery.

“What does he expect eating all that meat? He can’t be surprised!”

The Grand Tour star replied: “Better than dying of vegetable-induced boredom.”

The Clarkson’s Farm star was previously told how he was days away from death in a major health scare.

Jeremy revealed he needed an operation to clear blocked arteries after feeling ill on a recent holiday.

He told The Sun: “I’m very grateful to everyone who sent supportive messages but I’m fine.

“I just have to not do any manual labour or dishwasher emptying for the next four years.

“At least I think that’s what the doctor said.”

Clarkson first felt unwell while on a break on an Indian Ocean island.

BBC star & legendary broadcaster Colin Chapman dies aged 87

He wrote in The Sunday Times: “I was at the breakfast table and when I stood up to leave, I had to take a moment to make sure my limbs were working properly.”

He later had issues trying to dive, swim and walk which continued after his holiday.

One day he felt “clammy and there was a tightness in my chest”.

A doctor was called to his Cotswolds farm when he noticed “pins and needles” in his left arm.

Jeremy was then taken by ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

He said: “It seems that of the arteries feeding my heart with nourishing blood, one was completely blocked and the second of three was heading that way.

“The question was this. Were the arteries so ruined that I’d need an emergency heart bypass?

“Or could he use Dyno-Rods and ultrasonic battering rams to loosen them up before inserting a stent?

“Mercifully, this turned out to be possible.”

The host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? went on: “I was off to the operating theatre.

“Because my bankruptcy was most definitely just around the corner. Days away? ‘Maybe’, he (a doctor) said.”

A stent was then inserted into the blocked artery to keep it open and restore blood flow to the heart.

Jeremy said: “It wasn’t especially painful. Just odd.”

He returned home the next day, and said he thought: “Crikey, that was close.”

The farm owner said in an interview with The Guardian back in April about his mortality: “I don’t have long. I’ve probably only got what, 70,000 hours left, maybe?”

Baywatch star Michael Newman dies at 68 following Parkinson’s battle

Michael Newman, best known for his starring role as Mike “Newmie” Newman on the original Baywatch series, has died aged 68.

Matt Felker, his close friend and After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun director, confirmed Newman’s passing on Sunday (October 20), telling People he died “from heart complications.”

Newman’s death comes nearly 20 years after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006. Parkinson’s is a nervous system disorder that causes a gradual decline in motor and non-motor abilities, according to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

“I got to see Mike the last time he was conscious and he looked [at] me and in typical Mike fashion said, ‘You’re just in time,’” Felker recalled, adding that the actor was “surrounded by his friends and family” at the time of his death.

Born in 1957 in California, Newman rose to fame for his portrayal of lifeguard Newmie in the long-running drama Baywatch, which ran from 1989 to 2001.

Newman starred in 150 episodes of the 11-season soap opera, which followed the day-to-day lives of a group of dedicated Malibu lifeguards. He was the only cast member on the series who was a real-life trained lifeguard.

During his time on the show, Newman also worked as a full-time firefighter and was able to balance his schedule at the firehouse while filming Baywatch. Once the series came to an end, he continued his career as a firefighter until he eventually retired after 25 years.

He also appeared in a few 1996 episodes of the spinoff series Baywatch Nights, and was featured in Felker’s Baywatch docuseries, which was released on Hulu in August.

While promoting the documentary, Newman expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to share his story, telling People: “Matt Felker, in the making of this documentary, has given me and other Baywatch cast members a chance to tell our stories as they truly reflect our real lives. This opportunity means a lot to me.”

In recent years, he had spent his time helping raise money with the Michael J Fox Foundation to find a cure for Parkinson’s. “My body has changed so slowly that I hardly notice it, yet I am constantly reminded that Parkinson’s has now become the center of my life,” Newman told the outlet.

“This terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn’t want, but it’s brought me wisdom.”

Newman is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sarah, his now-adult children – Chris and Emily – and his one-year-old granddaughter, Charlie.

Fans of classic BBC sitcom left devastated as show disappears from streamer - 47 years after final episode

POPULAR TV sitcom Dad’s Army has disappeared from a streaming platform – 47 years after the final episode.

Dad’s Army follows the escapades of a geriatric group of volunteers in the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon during the Second World War.

John Laurie (Private Frazer) and Arthur Lowe (Captain Mainwaring) during an episode of the BBC comedy series ‘Dad’s Army’ filmed on July 30, 1977.

BBC’s Dad’s Army series was a fan favourite.

The main stars included Arnold Ridley as Private Charles Godrey, John Laurie as Private Frazer, Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring and John Le Mesurier as Sergeant Arthur Wilson.

Meanwhile, Ian Lavender was Private Pike and Clive Dunn was Lance Corporal Jack Jones.

The BBC series spanned 1968 to 1977 – over 80 episodes and it was a huge hit with viewers – regularly reaching 18 million people.

It was known for witty one liners and iconic catchphrases such as “don’t panic” and “they don’t like it up ’em.”

One of the most famous episodes was “The Deadly Attachment” where Captain Mainwaring and his platoon are asked to guard a captive U boat crew.

When Pike sings ‘Hitler is a twerp”, the German officer demands to know his name and Mainwaring replies “don’t tell him Pike.”

Many fans have relived such cherished moments up until now by streaming online. However, the programme has been dropped from streaming service, Now.

Taking to Redditt, one fan alerted others to the news saying: “Dad’s army now gone from Now TV. Pity.”

Another said: “Thankfully I already have the box set.”

But, there was hope as an eagle eyed viewer returned with: “All episodes are on YouTube.

“Sometimes you need to watch Dutch subtitles, but who cares! It makes it more fun.”

Its not the first time that Dad’s Army has caused a stir.

One episode, Absent Friends, was not allowed to be shown on air for 22 years after a sketch referring to an IRA member caused offence.

Dad’s Army was adapted into a film in 1971, starring the original TV cast.

It was resurrected to a new generation in 2016 when Toby Jones played Captain Mainwaring and Bill Nighy was Sgt. Wilson.

Best BBC comedies

A BBC boss called on the industry to “save our sitcoms”, but the corporation has a history of fantastic shows.

We look back at some of the best to ever grace the screen.

Fawlty Towers (1975-1979) – Only two series were made of the beloved institution. However, the cultural impact of the series starring John Cleese and Connie Booth spans decades. It follows rude and intolerant Basil Fawlty (Cleese) as he attempts to improve the reputation of his hotel.

Only Fools and Horses (1981-2003) – The show was crowned by some as the best British sitcom of all time by a TV poll in 2004. Seven series were broadcast on BBC until 1991 with additional sporadic Christmas specials airing until 2003. Sir David Jason starred as ambitious market trader Derek “Del Boy” Trotter whilst Nicholas Lyndhurst played his younger half-brother Rodney. Set in working-class Peckham in south-east London, it follows the highs and lows of the lives of the Trotters’, in particular their brazen attempts to get rich.

Blackadder (1983 – 1989) – Four series were made of the iconic show, created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. Each series spans a different historical period as anti-hero Edmund Blackadder (Atkinson) tries to better himself in each society. Accompanied by his dogsbody Baldrick (Tony Robinson), trouble always ensues. A TV poll in 2004 found that Blackadder was voted the second-best British sitcom of all time

Absolutely Fabulous (1992 – 2012) – Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley star as failing PR guru Edina ‘Eddie’ Monsoon and alcoholic fashionista Patsy Stone. The pair embark on heavy-drinking sessions and abuse drugs in a desperate attempt to stay ‘hip’. Eddie constantly chases bizarre fads and fails to lose weight whilst her disappointed and neglected daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha) looks on.

Little Britain (2003 – 2006) – The premise is simple. A sketch show which features different British people from all walks of life that are engaged in all sorts of comical scenarios. Starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the pair created iconic pop culture characters. Viewers loved obnoxious council estate teenager Vicky Pollard, morbidly obese scrounger Bubbles Devere, slimming coach Marjorie Dawes, despondent office worker Carol Beer, disgraced politician Sir Norman Fry, of course the iconic Lou and Andy!

The Catherine Tate Show (2004-2015) – A sketch show starring the likes of Catherine Tate. She made iconic characters such as rowdy schoolgirl Lauren Cooper with her line ‘Am I bovvered?’. Other characters featured Bernie the nurse, the aga saga woman, complaining couple Janice and Ray, and of course her infamous ‘Nan’, Joannie Taylor. The last character herself spawned multiple specials and even a movie.

Gavin and Stacey (2007 – Present) The series tells the story of Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page). The pair embarked on an online and telephone romance for six months. But when they finally decide to be together properly, their friends and family get in the way. Ruth Jones and James Corden created the beloved show, which has been going for over a decade. The 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched comedy in 17 years and the most-viewed non-sporting event in a decade.

Dad’s Army ruled the airwaves for almost 20 years but now it has been dropped.

Pingu to return to screens with new Aardman adaptation

Pingu to return to screens with new Aardman adaptation

Beloved children’s TV series Pingu is set to be revived in a new adaptation from Barbie company Mattel and Wallace & Gromit creators Aardman.

The original Pingu launched on BBC One in 1990. A Swiss-German production, the TV series was designed by Otmar Gutmann, and followed the adventures of an impish penguin in the South Pole. The character was known for his catchphrase, “Noot noot”.

Pingu originally ran until 2000, and was briefly revived on British TV between 2003 and 2006.

The new series will be stop-motion animation, in the same vein as the original.

Mattel Television Studios, the TV arm of toy conglomerate Mattel, acquired the rights to Pingu in 2011 when it purchased HIT Entertainment.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mattel chief franchise officer Josh Silverman said: “You couldn’t ask for a more perfect marriage [than between Mattel and Aardman]. I was just with their team. We are overjoyed about the project.

“It’s going to be really, really special. Pingu just continues to, organically, have a tremendous amount of affection and attention. And a tremendous amount of relevance.”

Aardman are also currently working on a new Wallace & Gromit sequel, titled Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

The feature-length film, which will debut in the UK on BBC One around Christmas, will see the return of the villainous Feathers McGraw, the malevolent penguin first seen in the 1993 Wallace & Gromit short The Wrong Trousers.

The creators of the new film teased earlier this month that Vengeance Most Fowl would be an “emotional” return for the popular man-and-dog duo.

Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders London event on Saturday 12 October, executive producer Carla Shelley said: “I think we’re going to make everybody cry. We’re going to surprise everybody and make you laugh as well. It’s really emotional. That’s what’s at the heart of it.

Vengeance Most Fowl represents the first feature-length Wallace & Gromit outing since The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2005.

Last year, Aardman also released a sequel to the hit 2000 poultry-themed animation Chicken Run.

In a three-star review of the film, The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey wrote: “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget may not quite rise to its predecessor’s level, but if this is the closest Aardman ever comes to selling out then, well, there’s still hope for animation’s future.”

Love Island 2024 couple spark split fears after three months together – The Sun

LOVE Island’s Ayo Odukoya and Jess Spencer have sparked split fears – three months after the show.

The pair, who met and fell for each other in the villa over the summer, appear to have quietly called time on their romance.

In a bold move and a sign that things are over, Ayo has removed all traces of Jess from this social media.

As well as taking down any images of her, he has edited a caption the wrote after Love Island, to not include any reference to Jess.

Jess still has pictures with Ayo on her Instagram grid.

Ayo and Jess came in in fourth place but their time in the villa was shrouded in controversy after Ayo ditched Mimii in a shock Casa Amor move for Jess.

Despite picking to stay with Jess, viewers and a number of the islanders were convinced that Ayo still had feelings for Mimii.

In fact, Ayo’s ‘relationship’ with Mimii was at the centre of a number of rows, even when Mimii had moved on with Josh, who she ended up winning the show with.

Ayo’s brother even said he wasn’t sure about Jess when he entered the villa on family day.

During the final episode, Ayo declared his love for Jess, saying: “I am obsessed with you.. I know we say ‘Love you’ in passing, but the reality of it is that I do love you.”

The pair were not officially boyfriend and girlfriend when they left the villa but did seem to be going from strength to strength.

Since Love Island came to an end ALL of the couples have now split, apart from Nicole and Ciaran.

The Sun has contacted their reps for comment.

Love Island Series 11 – who’s still together?

The 11th series of popular ITV2 dating show Love Island created plenty of new couples – but not all of them have managed to go the distance.

  • Mimii and Josh – Split: After two months together, the show’s winners revealed it was over after mounting speculation. Mimii said: “Unfortunately things aren’t going to work out between us right now”
  • Nicole and Ciaran – Still together
  • Matilda and Sean – Split: The couple, who reached the final, opted to go their separate ways just a month after series 11 wrapped. They each announced news of the separation through statements posted on Instagram.
  • Jess and Ayo – Split?
  • Jessy and Joey – Split: Seven weeks after the villa, the pair confirmed their split. Joey told us: “Unfortunately, we have decided to call an end to the relationship but I hope we can continue to be friends.”
  • Grace and Reuben – Split: Grace and Reuben were eliminated just before the final. They mutually decided to call time on their relationship after struggling to make it work in the real world thanks to their conflicting, busy schedules.
  • Jess W and Hugo – Split: The couple – who got together during the Casa Amor stage – split just days after leaving the villa. Meanwhile, Hugo was seen snogging  former Love Island contestant Charlotte Sumner.

Harry Potter studio boss explains the ‘whole reason’ for new TV remake

The boss of the studio behind the new Harry Potter TV adaptation has explained the “whole reason” for its existence.

Last year, it was announced that JK Rowling’s bestselling wizard-themed books were being made into a new series, having previously been adapted into a hit film franchise between 2001 and 2011.

The move has been criticised by some fans of the books, with many deeming another adaptation “unneccessary”.

Speaking to Variety this week, Channing Dungey, the head of Warner Bros Television Group, explained the reasoning behind adapting the novels for television.

“There’s not a lot to talk about at this moment,” she said. “We’ve got our fantastic writing staff in place and they are doing what they need to do. And casting calls have opened up in the UK and Ireland, so the process is moving along. It’s going quite well.

“It’s an unbelievable dream, honestly, and as somebody who is a huge fan of books, the opportunity to get to explore them in maybe a little bit more in-depth than you can in just a two-hour film, that’s the whole reason we’re on this journey.”

In recent years, discussion around Harry Potter has been dominated by the outspoken anti-transgender views of writer JK Rowling. Many of the castmembers from the original film saga have criticised or distanced themselves from Rowling, including Daniel Radcliffe, who played the eponymous boy wizard.

Last month, a casting call was issued for the new TV series, seeking child actors between the ages of nine and 11 to appear in the show. The notice stipulated that Warner Bros and HBO will be pursuing “inclusive, diverse casting”.

Earlier this year, Radcliffe was asked about the new TV adaptation, and said that the producers were likely attempting a “clean break” from existing adaptations.

“Like the rest of the world, I’m very excited to watch as an audience member,” Radcliffe told E! News.

Asked about potentially appearing in the series, Radcliffe responded: “I don’t think so. I think they very wisely want a clean break. And I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it. I’m very happy to just watch along with everyone else.”

Creators are reportedly looking to release the series across 10 years, with each of Rowling’s seven children’s novels adapted into its own season.
