Hollyoaks star Ali Bastian shaves her head in emotional video amid cancer battle
BRAVE Hollyoaks star Ali Bastian has revealed she has shaved her head, in an emotional video amid her on-going cancer battle.
The star, 42, recently revealed that she had been diagnosed with stage two breast cancer, leaving her in “total shock”.
The actress, who has also appeared on the BBC One series Doctors and took part in the seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing, found a lump when she was breastfeeding her daughter Isabella.
The 42-year-old star is undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and is set to undergo a mastectomy and radiotherapy treatment early next year.
Ali recently revealed she was starting to lose her hair, following her treatment.
The brave star has now made the decision to shave her head and shared an emotional video with fans.
The montage took her followers through her journey from cutting her hair short to finally shaving it.
Writing next to the clip, she posted: “Hair loss is just one aspect of all of this that we all wish wasn’t a side effect but I know it’s not forever and a small price to pay for the chance to be well again.
“The deeper I get into my treatment, the more I see this as an outward expression of how stripped back and raw it feels right now.
“Also sharing as this feels like part of my way… not ‘back’ to myself… as I will be forever changed… but forward towards my future…to show up as I am right now. In the truth of today.
“For all of the warrior women going through this. You are not alone.”
Ali revealed her heartbreaking cancer news last month.
She told OK! magazine: “It was a total shock. I have mornings when I wake up and I’ve forgotten… and then suddenly I remember. I’m still trying to process it.”
Initially, doctors believed it could be a blocked duct but after antibiotics failed to stop the soreness she had tests done at a specialist clinic that revealed she had cancer.
Her husband David O’Mahony said: “I was with the kids and Ali stuck her head round the door and said that cancerous cells had turned up in the biopsy.
“She said it in the most subtle way so the girls didn’t twig. I could see how scared and in shock she was.
“It’s so tempting to try and ‘positive’ your way through news like this but it just hit us like a sledgehammer.
“I just had a feeling of it being so unfair that Ali had been dealt this hand.”
Ali played the character of Becca Dean on the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks from 2001 to 2007.
She moved from London to rural Ireland with her husband and two daughters, Isla and Isabella earlier this year.
Ali revealed in an Instagram post she suffered “major burn out” due to her life in London and challenges following her second pregnancy being some of the reasons the family left the capital.
Ali received the devastating cancer news in June.
She is now receiving care from the Orchid Centre at Cork University Hospital.
Ali admitted she still sometimes feels “frightened” about the future but praised all the medical staff she’s met during the process.
She added the advice the nurses have given her has been help, along with keeping a journal of her experiences.
Ali said: “I feel like they’re treating me like one of their own.
What are the signs of breast cancer?
Signs and symptoms
Stay alert to symptoms of breast cancer which include:
- A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
- A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
- A change in the colour of the breast – the breast may look red or inflamed
- A nipple change, for example, it has become pulled in (inverted)
- Rash or crusting around the nipple
- Unusual liquid (discharge) from either nipple
- Changes in the size or shape of the breast
On its own, pain in your breasts is not usually a sign of breast cancer. But look out for pain in your breast or armpit that’s there all or almost all the time.
Although rare, men can get breast cancer. The most common symptom of breast cancer in men is a lump in the chest area.
Check your breasts
There’s no special way to check your breasts and you do not need any training. At Breast Cancer Now, they say, it’s as simple as TLC: Touch, Look, Check:
- Touch your breasts: can you feel anything new or unusual?
- Look for changes: does anything look different to you?
- Check any new or unusual changes with a GP
“It’s like I’ve been scooped up. I’ve been blown away by the care and kindness – every kind word and cup of tea means a lot.
“We love it here.”
Ali praised her former Hollyoaks co-stars including Sarah Jayne Dunn, Carley Stenson and Jodi Albert, who also lives in Ireland, for rallying around and offering support.
She remains positive about the future and said she was looking forward to a return to acting once she is “out of the other side”.

Graham Norton Show viewers left crying as Miranda Hart moves Selena Gomez to tears
An emotional interaction between Miranda Hart and Selena Gomez on The Graham Norton Show reduced viewers to tears on Friday night (11 October).
British comedian Hart, 51, opened up about her struggles with lyme disease in a new autobiography I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You.
Appearing on Graham Norton’s BBC talk show, she credited fellow guest Gomez with inspiring her to speak openly about her diagnosis. Gomez, the 32-year-old star of Only Murders in the Building, starred in a 2022 Apple TV+ documentary called My Mind & Me, which tracked her life and wellbeing after being diagnosed with lupus and bipolar disorder.
When both stars shared the sofa on The Graham Norton Show, Hart began thanking Gomez for giving her the “courage” to write about her own medical crisis.
“I watched Selena’s documentary and it gave me the courage to be vulnerable and share my feelings about my disease,” she said. “It kept me writing.”
Gomez can be seen tearing up at the admission – and so, too, did viewers at home.
Fans of The Graham Norton Show shared heartfelt reactions to the moment on X/Twitter.
“This is so touching,” one wrote. “A Miranda Hart and Selena Gomez interaction in 2024 is still so surreal to me.”
“Don’t think I’ve ever cried at the graham norton show before,” remarked another. “Selena and Miranda are two of my biggest inspirations and being chronically ill myself this moment was just everything to me
“Is anyone else tearing up watching Selena tear up?” wrote the official Graham Norton Show account, prompting several other people to answer in the affirmative.
Hart’s memoir covers her retreat from the limelight in recent years. In the book, she writes that she felt like an “outsider” because of her health issues and anxiety attacks.

“I was debilitated but also lucky in so many ways – I feared being perceived as complaining,” she wrote. “I realise now why so many experts and therapists became so after their own recoveries – I think in particular of the help I got from the Optimum Health Clinic, and why they, among others, call it ‘chronic invisible illness’. The invisibility is part of the problem.”
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can cause severe physical and mental problems if allowed to progress. Humans most often catch lyme disease via tick bites, if a tick has previously bitten an infected animal.
Elsewhere in the memoir, Hart also revealed that she had got married at the age of 51.

‘He’s in every show’ rant Dancing On Ice fans as line up is announced
THE new Dancing on Ice 2025 line-up has been revealed – and viewers are not happy with the inclusion of a reality TV star.
Former Love Island star Chris Taylor has irritated fans by joining the class of 2025 after ‘being on everything’.
The podcast host announced: “So I’m doing Dancing on Ice. Only felt right to jazz hands the news a bit…
“I’m quivering like a leaf and vibrating like a Nokia 3310 with fear and excitement (in that order). I’m gonna document the quest from (I’m assuming) continuously nutting the ice to slightly less continuously nutting the ice as best I can, so join me for 5 months of me being relentlessly cold and moaning about shrinkage.”
Fans commented on the official Instagram announcement: “Chris again? He’s in every show.”
A second user inquired: “What aren’t you doing at the moment? Swear you’re constantly on my telly these days.”

A third agreed: “Chris Taylor is topping up his bank account big time this year!”
Another noted: “Jesus, no one works harder then Chris’ agent.” One blunt user added: “Talk about being thirsty for work! He is so desperate.” Another penned: “Is there a show he hasn’t been on?”
The Leicester lad rose to fame in season five of the dating show and starred in the 2024 Love Island All Stars series.
The former business development manager, who now works as an influencer, dated Maura Higgins in March 2021, but split six months later.
The Celebs Go Dating star told Heart Radio he is petrified of the rink.
The 34-year-said: “I’m somewhere between absolutely terrified and excited, flitting between the two quite aggressively as well.”
The 2019 Love Island contestant and All Stars islander follows in the footsteps of his co-star and ex Maura Higgins.
He recently opened up about his relationship with Maura in an emotional moment on Celebs Go Dating.
A tearful Chris said: “I became friends with Maura, and then… yeah, like, we were mates for ages, and then it kind of progressed into other things.”
Confirming it had been a serious relationship, Chris confessed that he loved her but didn’t believe that the feelings were mutual.
Joining Chris on the upcoming Sunday night entertainment show is Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey, plus EastEnder star Charlie Brooks, Corrie’s Sam Aston, and Sir Steve Redgrave, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins Chelsee Healey.
The ITV competition will be fronted once again by Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern show will feature a string of soap stars and a Paralympian in the 2025 cast.
Also skating for survival is Towie’s Dan Edgar, 34, who told Heart Radio’s Ashley Roberts: “You see I like to think I’m a good skater, but I’m a terrible dancer.”
Springwatch host Michaela Strachan, 58, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine to reveal she’s signed up.
EastEnders star Charlie Brooks, 43, will be joining football pundit Anton Ferdinand, younger brother of Rio, who admitted: “So far out my comfort zone but I’m here for it!! Let’s gooooooooo.”
Former Traitors finalist and disability model, Mollie Pearce, 22, who was born with one hand is joining the skating crew.
She told BBC Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts who also has a stoma: “It’s my normal, I was born like it.
“I have never let it get in the way before so I’m not going to let it start now.”
Second Towie star Ferne McCann, 34, is pulling on her skating boots. She told Good Morning Britain she is “competitive” and admitted she can “kind of” skate.
Comedian Josh Jones joins the ice extravaganza and admitted on Gaydio radio station last week: “I’ve not got any skating experience whatsoever.
“My dancing isn’t great either, for a gay man I have no rhythm, I struggle to clap along to a beat so this will be fun.”
Coronation Street actor Sam Aston, 31, is joining the rink.
He said about his DOI audition: “They basically stand you on the ice. But I got a real buzz experiencing it a little bit.”
He added: “It’s nice for the public to see me as me and not Chesney!”
Professional rower and Type 2 Diabetic Sir Steve Redgrave will also be joining the competition. He told This Morning hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard that he will be the the “oldest and heaviest” in the cast, but is keen to keep fit and healthy.
