John Amos death: Good Times actor dies aged 84
John Amos, best known for his starring roles in the Seventies sitcom Good Times, the 1977 drama miniseries Roots and the Coming to America film series, has died. He was 84.
The groundbreaking actor, who made waves on screen playing strong Black male characters, died on August 21 from natural causes, Deadline reports.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” Amos’s son, film producer Kelly Christopher Amos, announced in a statement.
“He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor,” Kelly said.
“My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life most recently in Suits LA playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, America’s Dad. He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”
A month before Amos’s death, Kelly was reportedly arrested on suspicion of making “terroristic threats” against his sister, Shannon Amos, who had previously accused him of not providing appropriate care to their father amid his health issues.
In March, the Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation into Shannon’s elder abuse claims against Kelly, but it was closed a month later due to a lack of evidence.
Born in 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, Amos initially attempted to pursue a career in the NFL following his time playing college football at Colorado State University.
He later entered the world of acting in 1970, making appearances on The Bill Cosby Show and several episodes of The Tim Conway Comedy Hour before he landed his breakout role as Gordy the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Amos later starred as James Evans Sr on the CBS comedy Good Times for three seasons before his character was killed off in the two-part 1976 season four premiere.
The actor was written off the show after he publicly criticized the stereotypical storylines of his TV son JJ (played by Jimmie Walker).
“We had a number of differences,” Amos said of the show’s creator Norman Lear, in a 2017 interview with the TV Academy Foundation. Admitting that he wasn’t the “most diplomatic guy in those days,” he said: “[The show’s producers] got tired of having their lives threatened over jokes.
“So they said, ‘Tell you what, why don’t we kill him off? We can get on with our lives!’ That taught me a lesson – I wasn’t as important as I thought I was to the show or to Norman Lear’s plans.”
Amos also featured in several episodes of the political drama West Wing, three episodes of the miniseries Roots and the 1988 Eddie Murphy-led comedy Coming to America as well as its 2021 sequel Coming 2 America.

Shock moment furious Polly storms out of dinner party after demanding her co-stars shut-up
MAFS star Polly was left furious tonight as she stormed out of the dinner party after demanding her co-stars to “shut-up”.
Polly and Adam have struggled to find a spark in their marriage, with the bride fearing her groom has put her in the “friend zone”.
Things come to ahead in tonight’s episode when the Married At First Sight Honesty Box is brought out.
This is where the couple’s have to pick a question, and truthfully answer how they feel.
It was Polly’s turn to read her question to Adam.
She asked him: “Adam, what do you think you should do to prevent us from being stuck in the friendzone?”
However, he doesn’t take well to being asked this question and starts to get annoyed.
Adam replied: “If we’re stuck in the friendzone, that’s because I’m not ready to take it to the next step.
“And if I take it to that next step and then in a couple of weeks’ time say I’m not feeling it still, that would upset you and hurt you.”
Polly responded: “But I feel like you’ve dodged that question because that’s what you say to that every time you’re asked it.”
Adam said: “But that is the truth. That’s not really dodging the question.”
She then repeated the question, so that he can understand what she was saying better, but this angers him further.
Her fellow co-stars try to clarify the question but Polly tells them to “shush”, leaving them shocked.
Adam said: “I feel like you’re speaking to me in a tone I’ve not heard before,” with Kieran piping up and saying: “You’re overthinking that in your head.”
Others also tried to jump in, but Polly wasn’t having any of it and said: “Everyone just shut up for a minute,” leaving the cast stunned.
Lashing out at his bride, Adam says: “You’re speaking to me like s**t!”
He then concluded by saying: “I knew they were going to be s**t questions anyway.”
She was left in floods of tears and fumed: “You’ve made me look like a d***head in front of everyone.”
She then yelled at the group to be quiet again, before storming off and walking out on the dinner party.
Meanwhile, last night MAFS fans were left squirming during an ‘awkward’ massage between Polly and Adam.
It came after the pair enlisted the help of expert Charlene Douglas, who joined the couple in the flat to try and ignite the fire.
She set them various tasks such as hugging each other for a prolonged period of time and then eventually a hand massage.
Adam was instructed to massage Polly’s hand and Charlene watched on.
But while Polly seemed to be enjoying it, Adam said it was “a little bit weird,” as he added: “I felt a lot of pressure.”
And viewers seemed to be in agreement, as they coined the moment “awkward.”
One person penned: “The zoom in on his fingers penetrating her finger groins, deffo made me heave.”
A second said: “Polly needs to stop looking so desperate. He can’t even hug or massage her without it being weird. He will never be into her. It’s not moving forward, it’s moving backwards.”
A third wrote: “Adam giving Polly a hand massage reminded me of when my Nan use to play round’a’round the garden when I was 6. He’s about as sexually attracted to her as I am a minced pie.”
A fourth person shared: “I never knew hand massages were a thing. Now I’ve seen Adam do one, I don’t want one.”
Meanwhile, Adam and Polly’s honeymoon sex was exposed to the group.
The first commitment ceremony sees all of the brides and grooms learn that the married couple were intimate after their nuptials.
Quizzed about why he had been cold with her, Adam said he didn’t want to give her the wrong impression.
“If I’m affectionate with her and cuddling kissy with her, I don’t want to give her the wrong idea because I don’t want to hurt her,” Adam explained.
But Paul was having none of it, firing back: “But you are married and you have already had sex.”
This prompted gasps from the group watching on.
“I didn’t know that,” Nathan says to Lacey, while Keiran covered his mouth and Eve had her head in her hands.
Trying to explain his reasons for having sex with Polly, Adam counters: “That felt natural at the time, you know what I mean?”
Mafs couples that have stood the test of time
Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby.
The pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam’s Doncaster home.
Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau.
Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December.
Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: “I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out – and excited for everything to come.”
Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019.
Owen recalled: “I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work.
“While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in.
“The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I signed up?’
“A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.”
Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson.
Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna’s vegan lifestyle, the show’s first same sex pairing are still going strong.
They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod.
Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: “We’re not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship.”

British remake of sitcom Cheers in development
A British version of the hit American sitcom Cheers is in development, over 30 years after the original concluded.
The classic 11-season series, about a neighborhood bar in Boston run by a retired Boston Red Sox relief pitcher, starred Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, John Ratzenberger, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt and, in later seasons, Kirstie Alley. It aired on NBC from 1982 to 1993.
The remake is currently being pitched by Big Talk Studios, the producer behind BBC One and Amazon Prime Video’s drama series The Outlaws, according to Deadline.
Should the series be greenlit, British screenwriter Simon Nye, known for his work on Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells, has been tapped as the showrunner.
Whereas the original show was set in a Boston bar, the reboot will take place in a British pub.
Speaking to Deadline about the reason for the remake, Big Talk’s Chief Executive Kenton Allen said: “The British pub is an endangered species, so there’s an answer for the ‘Why now?’ about it.
“The attitudes of Cheers in the ‘80s are very different to the attitudes of today, so there’s a massive amount of work to be done around taking inspiration from the original characters but creating something fresh.”
Joking that the task of rebooting the iconic sitcom “might be insane,” Allen said it was a “huge honor” to be entrusted with the comedy.
While he acknowledged comedies are more “prone to failure than any other genre,” he explained that the remake is a part of Big Talk’s efforts to branch out amid a rocky time for British scripted shows.
Cheers followed the lives of Sam Malone (Danson), a former MLB relief pitcher who owns and runs a bar, and the regulars who meet there to drink, relax and socialize.

The series also starred Shelley Long as Diane Chambers, an intelligent and somewhat snobby woman forced to work as a waitress at the bar after being abandoned by her fiancé. Although they constantly bicker, Sam and Diane eventually fall in love.
Its series finale, titled “One For The Road,” amassed 80.4 million viewers, making it the second-highest-watched TV ending in history, behind only M*A*S*H’s 1983 finale, which was viewed by 106 million people.
Cheers joins a long list of American shows that have crossed the pond – and vice versa – including The Golden Girls, Married… with Children, That ’70s Show, The Office and The Inbetweeners.

Phillip Schofield vows to NEVER work in daytime television again after This Morning ‘axe’
PHILLIP Schofield has vowed to never work in daytime television again – after revealing he was ‘axed’ from This Morning rather than quiting.
The 62-year-old talked openly about being ‘thrown under a bus’ by former colleagues at ITV.
Last year Phil admitted to an ‘unwise but not illegal’ affair with a young runner on This Morning.
His deceit subsequently led to his departure from the show he had fronted with Holly Willoughby, before eventually quitting ITV altogether.
And now Phil has vowed never to return to another daytime sofa again.
Speaking on Cast Away, he said: “Look, I love telly. I’ve got telly in my bones.
more on phillip schofield
“But I won’t sit on a sofa again. I’m not going to do that again.
“And there are some people I won’t work for again. Some people I won’t work with again.
“I’ve been hurt so badly by that sort of telly that you get to the point where you think ‘I don’t want to do it anymore’.”
Phil also revealed how he didn’t quit This Morning – but rather sacked by bosses.
Meanwhile, during the second part of his Channel 5 show, Schofe threatened to expose his former colleagues.
Speaking to the camera, he said: “People just went, who I thought were my friends and they just went and that’s like ‘what the hell’.”
He continued: “I have been chucked under a bus, and I could drive the same bus over so many people but I’m not that sort of person, I never have been.”
“But if I sit down with a camera and the light’s going who knows what I’ll say.”
Cast Away verdict
By Rod McPhee
OVER three nights – and three hour-long episodes – Phillip Schofield has been bearing his soul in new Channel 5 show Cast Away.
And it’s basically a chance for the former This Morning host to explain the circumstances that saw him leave the show last year.
To put it mildly, he left under something of a cloud, admitting he’d had a fling with a much younger runner on the programme. But in the C5 show he presents his own versions of events – one which is at odds with the narrative that emerged at the time.
He was portrayed as a man who’d had an “unwise” affair, who’d resigned as a result and had let many of his colleagues down.
But in Cast Away Philip insists he was fired by ITV and not for the affair, but because of the bad publicity that surrounded the crimes of his paedophile brother. He summed it up best when he claimed he’d been “pushed under a bus.”
After watching Cast Away what you’re left with is something rather confusing, however.
Did Philip think he’d done something wrong by having the fling with the runner, or not? For example, he said he wouldn’t have been slammed for it quite so much if it were a heterosexual fling.
He said he: “would have received a pat on the back for having an affair with a woman.” This infers that the only thing wrong with it was that it was a same sex fling. So why does he also say: “I will be forever sorry. I screwed up. I made a mistake.”
The answer, I suspect, is that the whole affair was a murky business. There were so many blurred lines around appropriateness, professionalism and honesty.
The only firm conclusion you can draw from the show is that Phillip himself isn’t ENTIRELY sure to what extent He was guilty of wrongdoing.
Amid the confusion, what will the viewing public think? I suspect that this will leave those who disliked Phillip to feel even more suspicious of him.
Those who backed him, will feel reassured too. But those who still aren’t sure what to think will be none-the-wiser – and I’m not sure if that’s what Phillip would have wanted.
