Legendary BBC presenter quits radio show after more than 50 years at corporation leaving listeners stunned
ANOTHER BBC presenter has decided to step away from the corporation after 50 years on the airwaves.
The legendary broadcaster left his listeners completely stunned after he made a moving announcement mid-show.
Johnnie Walker, 79, often took to BBC Radio 2 to present the Sounds of the 70s show and he also fronted The Rock Show.
But he just announced that he would step down from both of his two programmes on the network in a moving message to his listeners.
He initially read out a letter that was sent in by one of the fans, whose father loved the show but died in 2022.
This was due to him having pulmonary fibrosis, the same condition Johnnie has.
The legendary DJ then told his listeners: “Now, that leads me to be making a very sad announcement.
“The struggles I’ve had with doing the show and trying to sort of keep up a professional standard suitable for Radio 2 has been getting more and more difficult, hence my little jokes about Puffing Billy.
“So I’ve had to make the decision that I need to bring my career to an end after 58 years.”
Johnnie then told the audience precisely when his last show on the airwaves would be.
“I’ll be doing my last Sounds of the 70s on the 27th of October, so I’ll make the last three shows as good as I possibly can,” he admitted.
“Now this week in 1978, The Rolling Stones were special guests on America’s Saturday Night Live TV show and they appeared in a couple of sketches and performed three tracks from their latest album, Some Girls.
He added: “One of the tracks on the album seems quite suitable at the moment,” before going onto play The Rolling Stones’ hit, Miss You.
Johnnie then continued: “And by the way, I can also reveal not only my last Sounds of the 70s, but the person taking over the show will be the one and only Bob Harris.
“Bob Harris will be in charge of Sounds of the 70s from the 3rd of November.”
1966 was the year Johnnie first began his career in radio when he appeared on the offshore pirate station, Swinging Radio England.

He then became a household name by hosting the popular night-time show on Radio Caroline.
The star then joined BBC Radio 1 in 1969 and continued until 1976, becoming known for his music-centric approach.
He regularly impressed listeners when he prioritised the tracks over conversation over the airwaves.
His edition of lunchtime show was launched in 1971 where huge names such as Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles were first promoted on air.
BBC departures and returns
In 1976 he chose to leave the BBC in order to go to California and work in San Francisco.
He returned to blighty in the early 80’s, before making a comeback on Radio 1 in 1987 with The Stereo Sequence.
This was alongside his work on BBC Radio 5 Live and various shows on the new local station, BBC GLR in London.
1997 saw Johnnie join Radio 2 to present documentaries and fill in for other shows across the schedule.

A year later he was given the afternoon show on Saturday, before stepping up to present the drivetime slot from 5-7pm in 1999.
He became synonymous for his extensive music knowledge that he gained with his 30 years of experience.
One famous moment included the heartbreaking moment that he broke the news of his cancer diagnosis to his audience in June 2003.
After taking a break from the programme, he returned in March 2004, to Eric Clapton’s hit, ‘Hello Old Friend’.
He decided to step away from the Drivetime show in 2006 to front a new Sunday show on the network, while filling in for Terry Wogan on the breakfast show.
The star was also the voice for various specials, and he was later awarded an MBE for Services to Broadcasting.

Bridgerton’s new leading lady Yerin Ha seen on set for first time – with another star making a surprising return
BRIDGERTON newcomer Yerin Ha maintains an air of mystery as she hides behind a bejewelled mask in scenes that won’t air until 2026.
The actress — who joins the Netflix Regency romp as Benedict Bridgerton’s love interest, Sophie Baek — is filming for the hotly anticipated masquerade ball in this first look at her on set.
At one point, Yerin covered her embellished gown under a blanket to keep warm, between takes outside Ranger’s House in Blackheath, South East London.
Fans of the books on which the TV drama is based will know the ball is pivotal in the plot, as it’s where Sophie and Benedict meet for the first time.
Luke Thompson, who plays the hunk, smouldered in black as he lingered outside the mansion waiting for his scenes.
Our images reveal that, despite being banished to the countryside at the end of series three for her part in Lady Whistledown’s deception, scheming Cressida Cowper, inset right, is also back.
‘Feels like a dream’
Jessica Madsen, who plays the socialite, was spotted on set in an off-the-shoulder pink gown with matching mask, filming series four.
It comes after Yerin, who is best known for Paramount+ series Halo, shared how even wearing the costumes feels like a dream. The Korean-Australian actress said: “I never saw myself wearing clothes from the Regency period. I never saw myself in that kind of role.
“Even trying them on has been so new and fresh. It’s really refreshing and I feel really honoured.”
Since launching, Bridgerton has been lauded for its so-called “colour-blind” casting.
In her first interview since landing the part, Yerin said: “When I got the role I was having breakfast with my mum in Korea, so I stepped outside and then I was jumping around the streets.
“Mum came out crying and then she was like, ‘I think I’ve got to go home, I’ve got indigestion!’. I don’t think there are enough words in the dictionary to describe how it feels.”
PETE WILL BANISH BEDTIME DEMONS
PETER Capaldi is back as disturbing villain Gideon Shepherd in Prime Video’s supernatural crime drama, The Devil’s Hour.
Series two follows Gideon as he helps his ex-nemesis, detective Lucy Chambers (Jessica Raine), by using his ability to know the future.
And surprisingly, despite its spooky undertones, he reckons the psychological thriller is perfect viewing to give you a good night’s kip.
He said: “It can be quite satisfying to watch before you pop off to sleep.
“There are volumes to be written about how people felt when lockdown started, but when that ended, there was appetite for something a little darker that, at the same time, could be a balm.
“Shows like this, which are scary and cosmic, but removed from reality…”
He added: “I don’t like things about real serial killers. I don’t want to be reminded of the real horrors of the world.
“But all the horrors Gideon discusses are fictional, which gives people a chance to enjoy being scared and made to feel at ease.
“That’s always popular.”
The new series begins on October 18. A third season has already been commissioned.
CURRY ON RY ‘N’ ROB
RYLAN Clark has confirmed my story that he and Rob Rinder will visit India for their next travelogue.
The TV host shared this selfie with reality star pal Rob and spilled the beans on series two of their BBC hit The Grand Tour. He wrote online: “So excited we’re back for season two, and off to India.
“Bumped into each other yesterday. We can’t wait until we get going for S2.”
And Rylan joked: “I’ll try not to kill him.”
The series, A Passage To India, is inspired by E.M. Forster’s 1924 novel of the same name. Their previous outing, exploring Italy, was a big success so I’m sure the next will not disappoint.
REN BOY NOT UP TO SPEED
RENEE Zellweger is back as film favourite Bridget Jones – but the American’s Brit boyfriend admits he hasn’t the foggiest about what she is up to on set.
TV presenter Ant Anstead said of Renee’s latest flick Mad About The Boy: “I’ve been so busy that I haven’t been able to get across the plot, but I believe it’s closely related to the book – which I’ve not read.”
For The Love Of Cars host Ant is instead busy preparing for his new TV series The Naked Mechanic, which will broadcast on Quest and Discovery+ from October 24.
Meanwhile, Renee’s latest movie outing sees unlucky-in-love Bridget dealing with the death of her beloved Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth.
Raising two children without him, she becomes linked with new bloke Roxter, played by One Day star Leo Woodall.
CHARLIE PROVES HIS METAL
CHARLIE COOPER’s love for all things legend has been revealed in his new series, Myth Country.
The star of This Country grabs his metal detector to hunt King Arthur’s treasure in the BBC Two series, which explores bonkers British folklores, from crop circles to demon dogs.
At the show’s launch Charlie said: “Since doing the episode, I have become obsessed. I’ve upgraded my detector and been out on rallies to do detecting. I haven’t found cool coins but found a Tudor belt buckle.
“You piece together a story – with mine it’s some weary peasant who lost his buckle and is walking round holding his trousers up, poor bugger.
“Touching something that hasn’t been touched for 500 years is amazing.”

The Simpsons showrunner shares key to how series continually predicts future events
For years, The Simpsons has bizarrely predicted future events well before they happen.
From Donald Trump’s presidency down to the 2020 murder hornet invasion, the popular long-running cartoon’s ability to eerily foreshadow seemingly unforeseeable occurrences has often left viewers astounded.
But executive producer and showrunner Matt Selman insists the key to coming up with storylines that will likely come to fruition isn’t as magical as some might think.
“Well, the sourpuss answer I always give that no one likes is that if you study history and math, it would be literally impossible for us not to predict things,” he told People in a new interview.
“If you say enough things, some of them are going to overlap with reality, and then that’s the math element,” Selman explained.
“If you make a show that is based on studying the past foolishness of humanity, you are surely going to anticipate the future foolishness of humanity as it sinks further into foolishness fair,” he added. “So we don’t really think about it.”
He noted that writers “hate” when fans “put obviously fake images online and say we predicted things that we didn’t.”
“It was nicer when the predictions were just predicting real horrible events, not people pretending we predicted horrible events,” said Selman, adding that it’s “very depressing and dispiriting that people want the magic to be true so bad that they just start” putting out images of fake scenarios the show has never featured.
Currently in its 36th season, The Simpsons first debuted in 1989. Created by Matt Groening, the animated Fox sitcom follows the eponymous family and their everyday life in a typical American town.
Earlier this year, Channel 4 pulled a 1996 rerun of the show that featured a scene reminiscent of the recent assassination attempt of Trump.

That episode, titled “Lisa the Iconoclast,” which was scheduled to air on July 14, featured a law enforcement officer on a nearby rooftop taking aim at Lisa Simpson as she stands at a podium at a rally — eerily similar in appearance to the Trump’s campaign rally one day earlier.
According to an episode summary, “Lisa finds out that Springfield’s founder was a murderous pirate who tried to assassinate George Washington, and decides her fellow citizens should know the truth.”
Instead, the episode was replaced with one from season 30, titled “Baby You Can’t Drive My Car,” which follows Marge and Homer Simpson as they work together at a tech company that produces self-driving cars.
