Ludwig review: If you like Thursday Murder Club, you’ll love this abject pap from David Mitchell

Can you think of a four-letter synonym for “snug”? How about an eight-letter adjective meaning “twist-filled”? Or a four-letter word, thought to be derived from Polari, denoting something “out of style or unfashionable”? These are, I’m sure, the sort of questions that puzzle-setter John “Ludwig” Taylor, the hero of BBC One’s new comedy-drama Ludwig, would have no trouble answering. Starring David Mitchell as the drippy cruciverbalist-turned-reluctant crime solver, Ludwig is indeed cosy, tortuous, and, yes, more than a little bit naff.

The story begins with John immersed in a life of hermetic serenity; just him and his puzzles. One night, he gets a phone call from sister-in-law Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin, well-pitched here), telling him there’s a taxi outside his house, ready to drive him 140 miles to her home in Cambridge. As it turns out, John’s identical twin brother – a police detective – has gone missing, leaving behind only a cryptic note to his wife. In a left-brained effort to solve this fraternal mystery, John agrees to infiltrate the local police force, and – long story short – ends up using his crossword nous to solve murder cases while posing as his twin.

Thus does John embark on the well-trodden path of the neurodivergent-coded crime-solving savant. It’s a cliche that’s been mined down to the bedrock by this point: Ludwig’s misfit protagonist follows in the footsteps of shows such as Monk, Sherlock, and Psych. Comparisons have also been drawn with twee British procedurals such as Jonathan Creek and Father Brown; there’s more than a scintilla of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club in the stew.

Ludwig has a robust supporting cast that includes The Office’s Ralph Ineson as a chief constable and Dipo Ola as John’s inscrutable partner, as well as a few enjoyably random guest stars (Derek Jacobi one minute, Karl Pilkington the next). But this is Mitchell’s show – so it’s a shame that his effectiveness in the main role is somewhat mixed. There is an undeniable affability to Mitchell as a performer; an effect that seems to convey natural and genuine intelligence in an instant. But there’s something missing, too. In his best performances (namely, uptight heel Mark Corrigan in Channel 4’s Peep Show), Mitchell excels at weeding out the sanctimony and subtle nastiness in his characters: Ludwig, all too pure, sees this toolkit left idle.

With all that said, I could see Ludwig proving a hit. We are – as the runaway success of shows such as Death in Paradise suggests – a nation that seemingly cannot get enough of whimsical, innocuous crime procedurals. (Ludwig screenwriter Mark Brotherhood has in fact previously written for Death in Paradise and Father Brown.) Sometimes you want a puzzle you just don’t have to think about – and as escapist pap goes, you could do worse than this.

Stanley Tucci and Priyanka Chopra spotted filming Citadel scene on London street

Priyanka Chopra and Stanley Tucci were spotted filming an intense scene for Citadel season two in London on Wednesday (25 September).

In a video shared by Neha Mohan on social media, the pair are seen arguing on the streets of the capital.

Between the scenes, Chopra was also caught on camera laughing on the pavement.

“I was walking through Shoreditch yesterday when I stumbled upon filming!” Mohan wrote, captioning the footage.

The E4 experts have matched them by their personalities, likes and dislikes.

But between eight couples there are only two that have yet to clash – Kristina and Kieran, and Ross and Sacha.

Polly and Adam have argued numerous times, after he confessed he wasn’t attracted to her and asked the experts for a petite brunette.

During the first dinner party of the season viewers spotted him eyeing up Lacey who fits the bill.

And as Adam chatted to Nathan about their honeymoons, he suddenly started quizzing him on his bride Lacey.

He said: “Was she in a bikini then?’ Little thong bikini?”

Moments later Lacey went to sit with the boys including Ross.

Commenting as they watched the scenes, one viewer noticed: “When Lacey went to sit on the same sofa, Ross was making room between him and Nathan, but she chose to go and sit between Adam and Nathan.”

Another said: “Adam’s comments about Lacey, To her HUSBAND NO LESS.”

One more agreed with the comments and said: “Glad I’m not the only one who picked up on that!”

Watch as Polly breaks down in tears AGAIN after MAFS UK groom Adam awkwardly admits he STILL can’t say he fancies her

Polly couldn’t hold back the tears later on when they discussed their relationship at the commitment ceremony.

And Adam got a grilling from show experts Mel Schilling and Paul C Brunson.

Adam said: “It’s a tricky one. She obviously really fancies me and I want to say it back to her but I can’t. She’s not my usual type but I’m hers.

“Don’t get me wrong, she’s a good looking girl and we get on like a house on fire, but I just feel bad for her.”

The remark prompted smirks and raised eyebrows from the other couples around the room, and even Polly made a face.

Paul said: “It seems as if what you are actually doing is pushing yourself away from her.”

He added that Adam could “understand he’s in an unnatural experiment” and go “all in”.

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda wins Emmy Award despite backlash from industry pros

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda has won an Emmy Award for her AJ+ documentary, It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m Still Alive.

The 25-year-old activist and filmmaker was nominated in the category of Outstanding Hard News Feature Story for the film, created with AJ+, an imprint of Al Jazeera, which was also nominated. The Peabody award-winning feature chronicles the journey of Owda as her family flee the bombardment of their home in Beit Hanoun in the Gaza strip.

John Laurence, senior executive producer at AJ+, accepted the award on Owda’s behalf as she remains trapped in the Gaza strip.

“We’d like to thank the academy for this recognition, this award is testimony to the power of one woman, armed only with an iPhone who survived almost a year of bombardment,” he began.

“Over 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza including several of our Al Jazeera colleagues. Our bureau in the occupied West Bank was shut down at gunpoint just last week.

“We thank you, our journalistic community for this recognition for Bisan and for the AJ+ team and we urge you to join us in saying journalism is not a crime.”

Owda gained millions of followers on social media since 7 October as she documented the destruction of “70 per cent of our infrastructure” in Gaza following Israeli military action.

However, the nomination sparked controversy when over 150 people, including Will & Grace star Debra Messing, Cruel Intentions actor Selma Blair, former Paramount CEO Sherry Lansing, head of WME Rick Rosen, billionaire Haim Saban, and entertainment manager Michael Rotenberg signed a letter asking for the journalist’s nomination to be revoked.

Organised by the Creative Community for Peace, a Jewish non-profit organisation which describes its mission as “to educate about rising antisemitism within the entertainment industry, and to galvanise support against the cultural boycott of Israel”, the group alleged that Owda has ties with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a group which is a proscribed terrorist organisation in the US, Japan, and European Union.

However, NATAS CEO President Adam Sharp responded to the letter saying it had been “unable to corroborate these reports, nor has it been able, to date, to surface any evidence of more contemporary or active involvement by Owda with the PFLP organisation”.

In a letter addressed to Ari Ingel, the executive director of Creative Community for Peace, Sharp noted that Emmy-nominated documentaries in the past “have been controversial, giving a platform to voices that certain viewers may find objectionable or even abhorrent. But all have been in the service of the journalistic mission to capture every facet of the story.”

Israel’s campaign is currently being reviewed for a “plausible” risk of genocide by the International Court of Justice, and more than 40,000 people, including almost 17,000 children, have been killed. Israel vehemently denies any wrongdoing and insists its goal is to eradicate Hamas after 1,139 people including 815 civilians were killed on 7 October.
