Rosie O’Donnell reveals surprising connection to the Menendez Brothers
Comedian Rosie O’Donnell has revealed a surprising link to the Menendez brothers, who she says consider her their “big sister”.
Lyle and Erik Menendez are serving life sentences for the 1989 murders of their parents, José and Kitty. The siblings have been back in the public eye following the release of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
They were arrested for first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder outside their home in March 1990 and sentenced in 1996. In 2024, new evidence emerged that has the potential to set them free, with their case now being considered by the LA District Attorney.
O’Donnell told Variety that she was first contacted by Lyle after he saw her appear on Larry King Live, 30 years ago. At the time, The View host took the opportunity to say she believed the brothers claims that they had been molested by their father.
TV host Barbara Walters, however, warned her against staying in touch with the convicted murderers, claiming that Lyle was “very cunning”.
Yet two years ago O’Donnell found herself once again vouching for the brothers after the release of a documentary, which shed new light on the case.
“I got a call from Lyle’s wife – I didn’t even know he had a wife – asking if I would talk to him,” she said. “He called me on Mother’s Day last year.”
She added that the pair are now regularly in touch.
“We talk a lot,” she continued. “I told them I would do what I could with whatever dwindling fame I have to bring light to their story. I said, ‘It’s not the Nineties, Lyle. I’m not on that show anymore.’
“I think if you feel strongly about something and you want to try to help society, you can use your voice because the children who are abused in their homes don’t have a voice. It’s up to the adults who were once those children to speak for them.”

Last year, O’Donnell made the trip to San Diego prison to see the brothers in prison.
“I saw Lyle and gave him a hug. Then Erik came over to me, hugged me, and whispered in my ear, ‘Thank you for loving my brother.’ It was very, very moving to me.”
Beyond a friendship, O’Donnell said that the brothers feel like family to her. “I feel like a big sister in a way. Lyle is one of the most lauded prisoners in the California prison system,” she said. “You can’t ignore that.”
She added that she believes they could be released in the “next 30 days”.

Strictly’s Chris McCausland admits he was ‘down’ after thinking he made huge mistake during Saturday’s show
Chris McCausland has reflected on feeling down after believing he made a huge mistake during his Strictly Come Dancing performance during Saturday night’s show.
The comedian and his professional partner Dianne Buswell received a score of 29 for their Tango to “Rock and Roll All Nite” by KISS, but McCausland believed he had made a big mistake during the routine.
During Sunday night’s results show, which had been filmed on Saturday, McCausland and Buswell were saved from the dance-off despite being bottom of the leaderboard.
When asked by host Claudia Winkleman about how he was feeling during an interview segment, McCausland said he was “trying my best” but seemed dejected despite receiving the welcome news he was still in the competition.
Writing on X/Twitter after the interview aired, the comedian confessed he was feeling “down” on himself after thinking he had made a mistake during the routine.
“If I’m honest, I was quite down on myself in that interview clip straight after the dance that was on the results show tonight because I thought I had made a pretty big mistake,” he told fans on Sunday (3 November).
However, McCausland said he was feeling better when he realised he hadn’t made a mistake.
“I realised later that I hadn’t. I’m feeling good,” he said. “Thank you for all of your support!”
One fan reassured McCausland that fans love watching him dance each week, and that he gave a brilliant performance on Saturday night.
“Chris, you’re doing amazing and we love watching you dance. Don’t be so hard on yourself,” one fan said.
“I think you don’t realise how good you are. Believe it, you really are sooo good,” said another fan, as one added: “Please don’t give yourself a hard time – you are doing absolutely INCREDIBLE work and are genuinely indistinguishable from the other dancers.”

Saturday’s episode saw the dance couples compete in the first ever Icons Week, dancing to songs by legendary musical acts such as The Beatles, George Michael, Bruno Mars, Queen, Madonna and Shirley Bassey.
The episode featured a very high standard of dances with the top scores of the week going to Tasha Ghouri and Aljaž Škorjanec and JB Gill and his replacement partner Lauren Oakley, who stepped in for the ill Amy Dowden, with both couples scoring 39 points each.
In the dance-off were hockey player Sam Quek and her partner Nikita Kuzmin, who danced an American Smooth to Taylor Swift’s “Love Story”, opposite Montell Douglas and Johannes Radebe, who performed their Waltz to “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.
Ultimately, Quek was eliminated after a unanimous judges’ vote.
Her elimination follows the exit of Dr Punam Krishan, footballer Paul Merson, Toyah Willcox, Nick Knowles and Tom Dean, who all left the competition in its earlier stages.

‘Gutted’ Corrie star reveals he’s been conned out of hundreds of pounds in targeted scam as fans flood him with support
CORONATION Street star revealed he was scammed out of £600 while trying to buy Oasis concert tickets.
Actor Tony Maudsley has portrayed undertaker George Shuttleworth on Coronation Street since joining the ITV soap in 2020.
The 56-year-old was left devastated after he tried to buy Oasis tour tickets and ended up getting scammed, losing hundreds of pounds in the process.
He took to social media and issued a warning to fans over people on Facebook who claim to be selling tour tickets to see the British rock band perform.
Tony wrote: “Gutted. Thought I’d lucked out and got 4 OASIS tickets for my brothers birthday.
“Guy on Facebook who appeared to have mutual friends. I sent £600 to his bank. He kept messaging me saying it hadn’t cleared.
“Seems my bank were more on the ball than me and stopped the payment.”
In another post, the actor updated his followers and said: “Beware. This is a new level of scamming.
“Seems the guy he was pretending to be had had his account hacked.
“Luckily someone else that knew the real guy got in touch and warned me. Durrrr. WISE UP, MAUDSLEY!!”
He also confirmed that the bank managed to get all his money back.
Fans took to the comment section to send their support, with one suggesting to “Get the Corrie writers to write the concert into your storyline… that would be great viewing! And you’d get to go!
To which the star replied: “Hahahaha. Yes I can see George rocking away to Liam Gallagher whilst necking a bottle of Bud!”
This comes after Tony delighted fans as he was seen enjoying a Benidorm reunion.
Fans know he did a stint in the hairdressers at the Solana hotel.
He was hairdresser Kenneth Du Beke in the hit sitcom Benidorm, a role he played from 2011 to 2018.
Soap’s biggest whodunnits
EastEnders – Who shot Phil Mitchell?
The “Who Shot Phil?” storyline was a whodunit mystery that captured the attention of viewers and the media. The episode revealing the culprit was watched by 23 million viewers. Lisa Shaw, Phil Mitchell’s former girlfriend and the mother of his child Louise, was revealed as the killer as Phil slept with Lisa’s best friend. Phil forgave Lisa, and they agreed to keep the truth a secret.
Coronation Street – Who killed Tina McIntyre ?
The popular actress Michelle Keegan played Tina McIntyre for several years on the Cobbles, but she ended up being killed by Rob Donovan in a tragic turn of events back in 2014 when he chased her onto the balcony of the Builder’s Yard. When she tried to leave, he pushed her and she fell off the roof, with Rob convinced he killed her. With Tina still alive, he attacked her with an iron bar but she survived that attack and was rushed to hospital as doctors tried to save her.
Emmerdale – Who pushed Emma Barton?
Emma was then pushed off a viaduct by Moira after she talked ill of her dead daughter Holly, who died of an overdose in October 2017. Although Moira was responsible for Emma’s death, her son, Adam Barton, took the fall for the murder since he was already a prime suspect and he didn’t want Isaac to grow up motherless.
Hollyoaks – Glove Hand Killer
The Gloved Hand Killer was a mystery serial killer, who claimed the lives of 7 characters between January and October 2015, all by injecting them with potassium chloride. The Gloved Hand Killer’s targets were all people who had done wrong in some shape or form. There were 6 suspects for who the Gloved Hand Killer was, and the killer’s identity was revealed in October 2015. It was revealed to be doctor Lindsey Butterfield who had been killing people at the hospital.
He recently took to social media with a picture of him alongside his co-star and fellow Blow ‘n’ Go colleague Adam Gillen, who starred as Liam Conroy in Benidorm.
Tony wrote: “Six years since the Benidorm Blow & Go boys hung up their hairdryers… tonight we were back on the town.”
He added: “I’m bursting with pride having watched my little sidekick shining like a star in the West End in Cabaret.
“You were phenomenal Adam Gillen. My heart is full to bursting! Soooo proud of you! #LiamAndKenneth.”

GMB host Ed Balls ‘sits out’ interview with wife Yvette Cooper after ITV Ofcom complaints
Ed Balls “sat out” a Good Morning Britain interview with his wife Yvette Cooper this morning following a previous bias row that led to thousands of Ofcom complaints.
The ITV breakfast show host informed viewers he would not be conducting the interview with Cooper, who was appearing on the show in her position as Labour’s home secretary.
Balls’s decision came after Cooper’s last appearance in August, which received 8201 complaints, caused a bias row, with many believing Balls – a former Labour leadership candidate and cabinet minister – should not have been permitted to interview his wife.
Consequently, the GMB host, who has been married to Cooper for more than 25 years, told viewers on Monday (6 November), he was “sitting out” the latest interview.
Cooper appeared on the series back in August when Labour was receiving criticism for its response to the riots and far-right civil unrest spreading across the country, and Balls’ impartiality was thrown into question.
His softer approach was noted when compared with an earlier interview with Labour MP Zara Sultana, whom he repeatedly interrupted as she urged political leaders to condemn the protests as “Islamophobic” and “racist”.
Balls being permitted to interview Cooper was also compared to previous cases against broadcaster GB News, who Ofcom found to have broken the rules when Tory MPs working as presenters interviewed other Tory MPs.
While ITV never commented on the complaints, the latest move appears to be an acknowledgement of the furore, which saw viewers call the interview setup “absurd”.
The Home Secretary and GMB presenter have been married for over 25 years and have three children together – they were the first married couple to serve in government alongside each other back in 2008.
It’s worth noting that Ofcom currently does not include restrictions on such specifics of a husband interviewing his wife but due impartiality laws state: “No politician may be used as a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in any news programmes unless, exceptionally, it is editorially justified. In that case, the political allegiance of that person must be made clear to the audience.”

James Van Der Beek’s wife posts sweet tribute after Dawson’s Creek star’s cancer diagnosis
JAMES Van Der Beek’s wife Kimberly has posted a sweet tribute to the Dawson’s Creek star after he revealed he’s been diagnosed with cancer.
Last night James, 47, told how he has been living with colorectal cancer but assured fans that “there’s reason for optimism”.
His wife Kimberly, 42, later took to Instagram to share her support for the actor.
She reposted an Instagram upload about songbirds, which read: “Northern cardinals, the ‘romantic’ birds that mate for life, travel together, sing before nesting and feed each other seed beak-to-beak during courtship.”
Kimberly added: “Hi baby. @vanderjames.”
In a statement to People Magazine, James said: “I have colorectal cancer.
More on James Van Der Beek
“I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.
“There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
Colorectal cancer develops in the tissues of the colon or rectum, which are both part of the large intestine and the digestive system.
James has continued to work despite his diagnosis, appearing in a recent episode of Walker and a new film for Tubi called Sidelined: The QB and Me, which will be released on November 29.
He is also prioritising time with his large family, having had six children with Kimberly.
James shot to fame in the 90s in teen drama Dawson’s Creek, playing main character Dawson Leery.
The show ran from 1998 until 2003 and also made stars of the likes of Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson.
Last year James dashed fans’ hopes of a reboot when he insisted such a show would be “tricky” to make.
He told Insider: “It would be a tricky thing to do. It was a tricky show to make even back then.
“It was a very, very specific tone, a very specific time. I don’t know what would be replicable or be doable.”

Tasha Ghouri opens up on Strictly about online ableist abuse
Tasha Ghouri was shown in floods of tears on Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday night (2 November), as she spoke out about the trolling she has experienced as a deaf person.
Ghouri, 26, who rose to fame on Love Island, has been competing on the BBC One competition with pro Aljaz Skorjanec.
The star, who was born deaf and uses a cochlear implant, was shown giving a tearful interview before her dance as she told viewers about online trolls who make videos mocking the way she speaks.
She said that the abuse started after she appeared on Love Island in 2022, where she met her boyfriend Andrew Le Page.
Ghouri said that the hate made her feel like she had let down “the whole deaf community”, after she went on the dating show in part to raise awareness about deafness.
“When I left the show, I remember my dad sat me down and he looked at me straight and said, ‘Tash, there is a lot of horrific stuff that was written about you, especially on social media,’” she said.
“There are videos made about my voice and the way I speak, it became a trend at one point.”
The model added: “I wanted to go on for representation and I feel like I failed, not just myself but, the whole deaf community.”
She vowed not to let the bullies win, saying: “I’m going to use my platform and educate people.”
Her father was also seen speaking about the cruelty, saying: “It rips your heart out”.
Ghouri is the second ever deaf person to compete on Strictly, following in the footsteps of actor Rose Ayling-Ellis, who won the show in 2021.
The former Love Island star has also worked with the UK government to champion issues on behalf of deaf communities.

Before she went on Love Island, Ghouri went viral for appearing as an ASOS model for earrings wearing her cochlear implant and hearing aid.
Her novel Hits Different, written alongside Lizzie Huxley-Jones, chronicles the life of a woman with disabilities, who is an aspiring dancer and goes on tour with a global superstar.
She also hosts the podcast Superpowers with Tasha.
Strictly continues next Saturday at 6.35pm.

Inside Hollyoaks legend’s holiday from hell at luxury Mexican hotel with NAILS in baby pool and wild racoons
HOLLYOAKS legend Kieron Richardson has endured a holiday from hell at a luxury Mexican hotel this week.
Kieron, 38, shocked fans as he claimed to have discovered nails in the baby pool, as well as wild racoons in the corridors.
Taking to Instagram with videos of construction work, with one crew hammering away close to swimming guests, the soap star blasted the establishment but refused to reveal its name.
He wrote in his caption: “I’ve been to Mexico and not stopped banging on about it,” followed by laughing emojis.
The actor continued: “I won’t name the hotel but if you recognise it I feel you!!!! ….. ps there were nails yes nails as in hammer and nails in the baby pool!
“Also the raccoon was what you had to pass in the corridor to get to your room like a bush tucker trial! Follow for more recommendations.”
more on Kieron Richardson
Kieron also shared a photo of a damp ceiling, along with an image of a pool covered by a tarpaulin net and a sectioned-off area where a wall was being repainted.
The screen star, best known for playing Ste Hay on the Channel 4 soap, is dad to twins Chase and Phoebe in 2017.
However, he’s careful to keep his family life private and it’s unconfirmed whether they, along with his husband Carl, were with him on the trip.
In an interview with The Sun in 2021, Kieron insisted wouldn’t do a reality show featuring his children.
He had previously starred in a documentary about surrogacy alongside Carl but said he believed a family reality show would be “too exposing”.
The British Soap Award winner explained: “I put pictures online but that is probably all we would do.
“We did the surrogacy thing to help people because when we started, not many people had done it before so there were loads of questions I wanted answered.
“I feel like we did that and that is covered now.”
Asked if he would do a family reality show, he said: “No, I don’t think I would be up for that because I do like to have my private life. It’s too exposing.”
