Shawshank Redemption director ends 11-year retirement to helm Stranger Things 5 episodes

The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont has come out of retirement to helm two episodes of the forthcoming fifth season of Stranger Things.

Darabont, 65, is also known for directing other Stephen King adaptations The Green Mile (1999) and The Mist (2007).

His most recent directing credit came eleven years ago in 2013 on drama series Mob City.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, Darabont expressed his love for the hit Netflix series and said: “What really dragged me out of retirement was that my wife and I really love this show.

“Our content now is so filled with horrible people doing horrible things for greedy reasons but Stranger Things has so much heart. That positivity is something I really responded to.”

As to whether his work on Stranger Things would open the door to future directorial efforts, Darabond said: “Who knows? I haven’t missed the business but I have missed being on set with creative people… It may well be one and done, but we’ve still got time.”

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things has been eagerly anticipated by fans, some of whom expressed exasperation that it will not arrive on screens until 2025. The fourth season was released two years ago.

“Is anyone like dedicated to this show anymore its taken too damn long to come out LOL,” one person wrote on social media.

“Imagine taking nine years to release five seasons,” another complained, while someone else simply asked: “Can this show hurry tf up?”

“Figured this would happen but still damn,” one fan wrote.

Some have speculated that the lengthy production time is a result of the extensive special effects work needed for the new season.

Millie Bobby Brown in ‘Stranger Things’

Millie Bobby Brown in ‘Stranger Things’ (Netflix)

Stranger Things stars an ensemble cast including Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, and Winona Ryder, and focuses on the paranormal events surrounding an American town in the 1980s.

While the majority of stars from previous seasons of Stranger Things will be returning for the new episodes, Eduardo Franco, who appeared in season four as Argyle, won’t be one of them.

The character, a pizza delivery boy, was introduced as the best friend of Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) following the Byers family’s move from Hawkins, Indiana to California.

Despite his character becoming a fan favourite across Stranger Things’s fourth season, Franco was absent from the cast photo released earlier this year. He confirmed in an interview that he would not be returning.

An exact release date for the series is still yet to be announced.

Tom Brady responds to Baker Mayfield’s criticism over ‘stressed out’ environment at Buccaneers

Tom Brady responds to Baker Mayfield’s criticism over ‘stressed out’ environment at Buccaneers

Tom Brady had no sympathy for fellow quarterback Baker Mayfield after the latter accused him of creating a “stressed out” environment at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brady closed out his career at the Florida NFL team after winning six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. He won a final Super Bowl with the Buccaneers in 2021.

Two weeks ago, Mayfield appeared on the Casa De Klub podcast where he said Brady had left behind a “high-strung environment” in the locker room.

Brady responded to the claims while calling the Buccaneers’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday (September 29).

“I thought stressful was not having Super Bowl rings,” Brady said during the broadcast. “There was a mindset of a champion I took to work every day. This wasn’t daycare – if I wanted to have fun, I was going to Disneyland with my kids.

“There’s a way to approach this game and it’s with the right mindset to push each other outside of our comfort zone, and great teammates do that.”

Brady added that he had “no apologies” for his competitive spirit.

Speaking to the press after the Buccaneers’ 33-16 win, Mayfield said his comments had been misinterpreted and praised Brady’s mindset.

“I think a lot of that got taken out of context, and none of it was personal by any means,” Mayfield said. “It’s just what he demanded of the guys, and that’s the aura of Tom Brady. And that’s what he did to bring a championship here.”

Mayfield had previously said on the podcast appearance: “The building was a little bit different with Tom in there. Obviously, playing-wise, Tom is different. He had everybody dialed in, high-strung environment, so I think everybody was pretty stressed out.”

He continued: “You hear some of the stories about if he didn’t like a certain play call and he didn’t like it throughout the week and they still call it in the game, there might have been a throwaway on purpose or throwing it at the running back or receiver’s feet. There were a lot of mind games going on.”

Hired to replace Brady, Mayfield has previously praised his predecessor as the greatest of all time. On a 2023 episode of NFL Now, Mayfield said, “He’s the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, and he deserves that recognition. I’m going to be myself, and Tom was himself. I respect everything he did, and obviously people around here have worked with him, so I’m going to try and pick their brain about how he did it, how he operated and certain things that were the difference-makers and who he is.”

He added: “I’m excited about it. Those are big shoes to fill, but I’m just going to try and wear my own.”

Phillip Schofield breaks down in tears as he says it's 'nice to discover new things' about himself in TV comeback

PHILLIP Schofield broke down in tears during his TV comeback tonight.

The disgraced TV star – who is appearing on Cast Away to tell his side of the story – reflected on the past 16 months.

After settling in to his new surroundings on a remote island, Phil opened up on how life-changing his departure from TV led to appearing on Cast Away.

Holding a camera, the 62-year-old said: “I never in my wildest, wildest dreams thought that I would sit here and look at this and do this.

“You discover something new everyday.”

Visibly upset, Schofe continued: “It’s nice to discover new things about yourself, like for you, for you personally.

“And you don’t look online and people tell you what they think you’re like.

“So it’s nice to discover things about you that you didn’t know.”

Wiping away his tears, Phil said: “Sorry, that came out of nowhere. Phew.”

Picking himself up in search of food, he added: “Right, come on, there’s too much to do.”

During the show Channel 5 viewers watched as Schofe received a supportive message from Joanna Lumley before setting off.

Sun TV Editor Rod McPhee gives his verdict after Phillip Schofield bares his soul on Channel 5’s Cast Away

In a video message, The Ab Fab star said: “Listen, Phil these are the tips I’ve got, keep your knives sharp, spend much of the day trying to find wood otherwise you won’t be able to eat anything.

“When I was on the island I made a pair of shoes out of my bra… and I would love to think that you could do something a bit challenging, and bring it back so we could all look at it.

“I shall be thinking of you all the time Phil, and actually I’m a little bit jealous, lots of love.”

Cast Away verdict

By Rod McPhee

OVER three nights – and three hour-long episodes – Phillip Schofield has been bearing his soul in new Channel 5 show Cast Away.

And it’s basically a chance for the former This Morning host to explain the circumstances that saw him leave the show last year.

To put it mildly, he left under something of a cloud, admitting he’d had a fling with a much younger runner on the programme. But in the C5 show he presents his own versions of events – one which is at odds with the narrative that emerged at the time.

He was portrayed as a man who’d had an “unwise” affair, who’d resigned as a result and had let many of his colleagues down.

But in Cast Away Phillip insists he was fired by ITV and not for the affair, but because of the bad publicity that surrounded the crimes of his paedophile brother. He summed it up best when he claimed he’d been “pushed under a bus.”

After watching Cast Away what you’re left with is something rather confusing, however.

Did Phillip think he’d done something wrong by having the fling with the runner, or not? For example, he said he wouldn’t have been slammed for it quite so much if it were a heterosexual fling.

He said he: “would have received a pat on the back for having an affair with a woman.” This infers that the only thing wrong with it was that it was a same sex fling. So why does he also say: “I will be forever sorry. I screwed up. I made a mistake.”

The answer, I suspect, is that the whole affair was a murky business. There were so many blurred lines around appropriateness, professionalism and honesty.

The only firm conclusion you can draw from the show is that Phillip himself isn’t ENTIRELY sure to what extent He was guilty of wrongdoing.

Amid the confusion, what will the viewing public think? I suspect that this will leave those who disliked Phillip to feel even more suspicious of him.

Those who backed him, will feel reassured too. But those who still aren’t sure what to think will be none-the-wiser – and I’m not sure if that’s what Phillip would have wanted.

Hoda Kotb left Today show after NBC proposed pay cut to $20m salary

Hoda Kotb left Today show after NBC proposed pay cut to $20m salary

Hoda Kotb’s surprise decision to leave her role on NBC’s Today show after 26 years was reportedly partly a result of being asked to take a pay cut by the network.

The broadcast journalist, who turned 60 last month, is thought to have been receiving a salary of more than $20m a year.

Puck News reported that NBC executives “made clear to her agents that such stratospheric contracts were no longer justifiable given the industry’s inexorable decline.”

The Independent has contacted representatives for Kotb and NBC for comment.

Ratings have been falling for morning news shows across the board for several years. For context, a decade ago Today was able to bring in upwards of 4.6 million daily viewers. This month, the show averaged a little over 2.5 million.

Last Thursday, Kotb announced her departure during an episode of the long-running morning show.

“I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60, and to try something new,” she said. “I remembered standing outside looking at these beautiful bunch of people with these gorgeous signs, and I thought, ‘This is what the top of the wave feels like for me.’ And I thought it can’t get better, and I decided that this is the right time for me to kind of move on.”

She added that spending more time with her young daughters, Haley, seven, and Hope, five, was also an important part of her decision.

“Obviously I had my kiddos late in life, and I was thinking that they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have,” she said. “I feel like we only have a finite amount of time.

“And so, with all that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world,” Kotb said.

She clarified that she will continue hosting the Today show alongside co-anchor Savannah Guthrie through January 1, 2025.

“It’s kind of a big deal for me,” Kotb said. “I’ve been practicing so I wouldn’t cry, but anyway, I did.”

Kotb has been an integral part of NBC News for nearly three decades, having first joined the network in 1998 as a correspondent on its weekly nighttime show Dateline.

In 2008, she moved on to co-host the fourth hour of the Today show with Kathie Lee Gifford and then Jenna Bush Hager in 2019.

After NBC fired Today show host Matt Lauer in 2017 following accusations of sexual misconduct, Kotb stepped in alongside Guthrie as a temporary replacement. Weeks later, her role became permanent, as viewers responded well to her and Guthrie.

Speaking to the New York Times, Guthrie commended Kotb’s decision, saying: “It takes such guts to leave a place where you’re so comfortable, so beloved. There’s nothing rash about this.”

She added that she was “super proud” and “super heartbroken” about the news.
