WEATHER reporting can be a thankless task, with technical glitches and unexpected clangers landing forecasters in hot water.

The BBC apologised after its weather app this week incorrectly predicted hurricane winds of 15,345mph in London’s Oxford Circus, and temperatures of 404C in Nottingham.

The bloopers led BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood to say: “Believe me, it’s all hands on deck at the moment trying to sort it out.”

But this is not the first time weather reports have blown it — here are some of the best meteorological mistakes and mishaps . . . 

BBC Scotland’s Judith Ralston dropped the F-word in 2019 on the Seven Days review programme.

She said: “Oh f***, sorry. I forgot the pressure chart. Sorry.”

Alison Hammond made a splash on the This Morning weather map in Liverpool, accidentally pushing one of her assistants into the cold water of Albert Dock.

She said: “I thought at one point I’d killed him.”

AUSSIE weatherman Steve Jacobs was attacked by Marnie the pelican, who pinned him against a wall and pecked his backside as he was broadcasting from Taronga Zoo in 2010.

Steve screamed and collapsed in giggles.

AS Carol Kirkwood did a BBC Breakfast forecast in West Sussex in 2014, a dog squatted down and pooped.

The show’s presenter said: “Oh Carol, don’t look behind you.” Carol joked: “Upstaged by a dog, story of my life.”

IN 2021, Carol was pulled face down on the floor by a guide dog named Flash during the Chelsea Flower Show and her legs flipped up on screen.

In the studio, a presenter said: “We’ve got a Kirkwood down.”

Weatherman Michael Fish notoriously said ahead of the 1987 great storm, which caused destruction across the UK: “A woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way. Well, don’t worry, there isn’t.”

The gaffe remains one of weather’s greatest bloopers.

THE Radio 4 Shipping Forecast was interrupted for the first time in 91 years in 2016 when weather presenter Tomasz Schafernaker felt sick.

He tried to keep reading while retching, before mumbling “excuse me” and rushing off.

Fellow presenter Chris Aldridge finished the broadcast.

IN 2010, Tomasz had another calamity when he was caught on camera giving his colleague the middle finger.

Newsreader Simon McCoy had taunted him by saying: “We will have the weather forecast in a minute and of course it will be 100 per cent accurate and provide all the detail you need. I’ve just seen Tom Schafernaker preparing for it.”

VIEWERS saw double in 2014 when BBC presenter Helen Willetts had an awkward technical glitch that meant she appeared to have a twin.

CANADIAN meteorologist Kristi Gordon got the fright of her life in 2013 when a seemingly giant spider was projected on to her head during a weather forecast.

She screamed in terror.

The mini-beast had crawled on to the weather camera.

FLORIDA weatherman Justin Mosely went viral after a cockroach ran up his leg during a weather forecast in 2007.

He dashed off camera screaming: “Oh my God.”

STRICTLY Come Dancing alum Sara Davies showed off her incredible four stone weight loss.

The businesswoman, 40, starred in the beloved BBC programme in 2021.

Seated with Helen Skelton and Alan Carr, fans were wowed by Sara’s strapless red jumpsuit and huge silver heels as she sat in the audience.

Earlier on Instagram, Sara revealed her potential outfit choices for the evening.

Although she initially had three options, the star ultimately opted for a red jumpsuit and matching blazer jacket.

Fans showed their approval too, as one wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Sara in the audience looks amazing – she’s lost so much weight.”

Another added: “Off topic but Sara Davies looks absolutely stunning in the audience.”

It comes as Sara recently revealed she has dropped three dress sizes.

Having gone from a size 16 to size 12, Sara said she experienced a “trigger moment” while filming the BBC business show last year.

The TV personality unveiled cutting out sugar as her weight loss trick.

She told Closer magazine: “It was my 40th birthday in April and I wanted to be the fittest I’d been since I was 30.

“I’ve spent half my life sucking myself into Spanx, and now it’s bloody lovely to put on a dress and not have two pairs on underneath!”

During Sara’s time on Strictly, she was partnered up with Aljaž Škorjanec.

The pair reached Week 8 of the competition before being eliminated following a dance-off with Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin.

Speaking with host Tess Daly after being voted off, Sara said: “I had no idea any of this was in me.

“It’s been a life-changing experience and one I’ve loved every second of.”

SIR David Jason says his wife Gill got the hump when he wore Del Boy’s trademark coat off screen — because it made him smell like a camel.

The Only Fools and Horses star, 84, admits he took a sheepskin from the set of the BBC sitcom but rarely wears it.

He said: “I don’t dress like Del, despite having snaffled one of his coats from the wardrobe department at the end of the series as a souvenir.”

The coat, he said, was “very snug, actually, but not terribly stylish”.

He went on: “My wife gently suggested they made me look, and slightly smell, like a camel.”

Sir David first played market trader Del Boy in 1981, becoming a national treasure.

He was rarely seen without his beloved sheepskin in the early series.

In his new memoir This Time Next Year, out this week, Sir David also played down his reported feud with Only Fools co-star Nicholas Lyndhurst, 63.

He said of his fellow actor, who played Del’s brother Rodney: “You see each other very happily when the time allows — but so often the time simply doesn’t allow.”

He added: “The show ends. The circus moves on.

“You do other jobs.

“You have your own families and friends, your own set of circumstances, just like you did before you met.

Week four of Strictly Come Dancing saw the celebrity contestants continue to excel as they delivered a series of impressive performances on Saturday night (12 October).

Love Islander Tasha Ghouri soared to the top of the leaderboard with her pro partner Aljaž Škorjanec after their Charleston recieved 39 points from the judges, with EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick and opera singer Wynne Evans following five points behind with 34.

Olympic sprinter Montell Douglas received a score of 33 for her Viennese Waltz to “Nobody Gets Me” by SZA. Meanwhile, Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell left the Strictly judges speechless with their complex salsa choreography, which scored 30 points.

“I can’t even imagine how you managed to do that so flawlessly when you can’t see,” head judge Shirley Ballas praised. “On top of that, you kept to your music, you didn’t miss a beat. I’m telling you from my heart, that is absolutely impressive.”

At the other end of the scale is TV doctor Punam Krishnan, with 20 out of 40, and DIY SOS star Nick Knowles who received just 21 points for his Charleston after returning to the competition following a serious leg injury.

“This time last week I thought I was out,” Knowles revealed after performing, while his partner Luba Mushtuk tearfully added: “Nick was determiend to dance and the fact he fell in love with dancing is one of the most beautiful things.”

STRICTLY fans have slammed the judges scoring as “inconsistent” after Wynee Evans was scored nines on tonight’s show.

The Welsh opera singer, 52, danced the Tango to Abba’s hit track Money, Money, Money with pro Katya Jones.

The GoCompare star took to the dancefloor on Saturday night with a dramatic performance.

The judges praised him for his high energy routine, with Anton Du Beck saying it was “tremendous”.

He said: “All in all, that was one of your best performance.”

Craig Revel Horwood said: “You bum was sticking up – but I loved, loved, loved it. Winner, winner, win.”

Motsi Mabuse agreed and said: “This was your best dance yet, I’ve been waiting for this dance, I knew it was coming.

“What I love is that you guys give us a story…beautifully timed.”

Head judge Shirley Ballas was also full of praise and said: “I got goosebumps, it was passionate and told a tale.

“You got out there and I could see you’re in it to win it.”

Craig and Anton scored Wynne an 8, while Shirley and Motsi gave him a nine, making it his highest score so far.

But some fans have hit out at the judges yet again for “overmarking” another celebrity – with some claiming they have their “favourites”.

One wrote: “So they’re giving 8s and 9s for Wynne, yet Sarah (imo) did WAY better and got criminally undermarked!! this show is so inconsistent.”

A second fumed: “Overmarked again. Four weeks in a row this show has overmarked him.” Ridiculous over praise of the BBC employee…”

A third baffled fans commented: “9 ?..my arse…ffs

“I’m so sorry but i would’ve given Wynne a 6? so overmarked in my opinion, I love the characterisation i just felt needed more sharpness to it,” this annoyed viewer posted.

This person shared: “I can’t take some of the scoring seriously this evening.”

Someone else echoed: “Crazily over marked!! What is going on this week?”

While this viewer asked: “Why are the judges throwing out 9’s like they’re confetti?”

Another added: “9s for Wynne?,” with a confused face emoji.

This is not the first time that fans have hit out at the judges overscoring.

Last week, fans thought Wynne was overmarked during Movie Week.

Toyah Wilcox was eventually sent home after failing to impress as Ursula from the Little Mermaid and falling to the bottom of the leaderboard.

However, as some noted improvements and others began to slip – in Pete Wicks’ case, quite literally on the dancefloor – fans of the show have criticised the judges for favouritism of Wynne Evans.

The GoCompare opera singer put his best foot forward with a cha cha, giving his take on Mrs Doubtfire alongside pro dancer Katya Jones.

They earned a 30 out of a total 40 points available, putting them high on the leaderboard.

However, fans believed the star was given too high a score, especially when Craig criticised his “wooden and stiff” hip action.

Katya and Wynne also played up an error they made, claiming it was “choreographed” before joking to Claudia Winkleman part of the fun of the character was “blaming any mistakes” on them.

Taking out their frustrations on X, one viewer wrote: “Wynne is too cocky and thinks he’s better than he is….way overmarked as usual.”

“Massive overmarking of Wynne’s cha cha? Constantly overmarked. #Strictly,” said a second.
