The true story behind Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story may set brothers free after 35 years
On the evening of 20 August 1989, JosĂ© and Kitty MenĂ©ndez were watching TV in the den of their Beverly Hills mansion when their two sons, Lyle and Erik, entered the room carrying 12-gauge shotguns. Police sources told the Los Angeles Times that a gun barrel was thrust into JosĂ©âs mouth after heâd already been shot four times, and a final blast blew off the back of his head. Kitty, who was shot 10 times, attempted to crawl away while her sons reloaded, before receiving a fatal blast to the cheek. Hours later, the older brother, Lyle, called 911, sobbing to the dispatcher: âSomebody killed my parents!â
Now, 35 years on, the notorious murders are the subject of a new Ryan Murphy drama on Netflix, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Javier Bardem and ChloĂ« Sevigny star as the parents, Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch as the sons. Itâs the second in Murphyâs controversial true-crime saga, the first edition of which reignited interest in the âMilwaukee Cannibalâ, Jeffrey Dahmer. That show, titled Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and starring Evan Peters as the bespectacled serial killer, went stratospheric, hitting 1 billion hours of views in its first 60 days and prompting widespread debate about the glamorisation of murderers. This time, though, things are different. This time, the âmonstersâ might just be the victims.
During the brothersâ trials, which took place from 1993 to 1996, Lyle and Erik â who were 21 and 18 at the time of the killings â claimed they had endured a lifetime of abuse at the hands of their father, a millionaire Hollywood entertainment executive. The defence therefore argued that the pair should be tried for manslaughter, not murder, further alleging that JosĂ© had threatened to kill his sons to keep them quiet. It didnât work. On 2 July 1996, Lyle and Erik were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. But more than three decades on, in time for the arrival of Netflixâs highly anticipated new series, fresh evidence has the potential to set them free.
Two months after the murders took place, Robert Rand, a journalist for the Miami Herald who perhaps knows the case better than anyone, travelled to Los Angeles to interview the MenĂ©ndez family. At the time, the brothers had not yet been arrested, and it was widely believed that the mafia was responsible for the deaths of JosĂ© and Kitty in connection to JosĂ©âs status as a wealthy home video executive.
âI spent three days with Erik and Lyle. They were not suspects, publicly. I had absolutely no reason to be suspicious of them,â Rand tells me now. âThey were telling me very loving, emotional stories about how close-knit their family was.â Little did Rand know, it would be the first of many times he met with the brothers over the next three and a half decades for a story that would define his career. His 2018 book, The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menendez Family and the Killings that Stunned the Nation, has just been re-released with a new epilogue revealing crucial information uncovered in the past six years.
Previously, the brothers claimed they had gone to the cinema to watch Batman the night their parents were killed. In reality, they had dumped the guns somewhere off of Mulholland Drive, then driven to a movie theatre and bought tickets to a film they didnât watch before returning home to the crime scene. During the 1989 interview, Erik chillingly told Rand: âIâve never seen anything like it, never will see anything like it. They looked like wax. Iâve never seen my dad helpless, and itâs sad to think he would ever be.â
In the trailer for Murphyâs new series â screeners were not available to press for the release â Erik and Lyle are shown going on a lavish spending spree in the wake of their parentsâ deaths. Indeed, in the seven months between the murders and their arrest, the brothers spent an estimated $700,000. Lyle bought a Porsche 911 Carrera to replace the âpiece of s***â Alfa Romeo his father had given him, as well as $40,000 worth of clothes and a $15,000 Rolex watch. His more eccentric purchases included a $300,000 down payment on a buffalo wing restaurant in Princeton, New Jersey, where he had attended college.
Eventually, Erik confessed to the killings to his psychologist, Jerome Oziel. Lyle was furious and allegedly threatened to kill the doctor. Unbeknown to them, Ozielâs mistress, Judalon Smyth, was listening through the door. âI never thought I believed in evil, but when I heard those boys speak, I did,â she told investigative journalist Dominic Dunne (portrayed in Monsters by Nathan Lane) in 1990. After a messy breakup with Oziel, it was Smyth who alerted police to the existence of therapy session tape recordings in which the MenĂ©ndez brothers admitted to the murders of their parents.
After their arrest in March 1990, it took three years to get Lyle and Erik on the stand as lawyers debated whether using the tapes as evidence violated doctor-patient privilege. The trial was broadcast on Court TV, garnering international attention. âYou have to remember that back in the 1990s there was no internet, no social media,â Rand tells me. âSo once the mainstream media set the profile or the agenda for the case â greedy, rich kids kill parents â that was it, you were cooked. And it was very difficult for the defence to fight back.â

The brothers admitted to killing their parents, but contended that they did so out of fear, especially of their father, who they claimed was a violent paedophile. As evidence, the defence called on several family members to testify. Lyle and Erikâs cousin Brian Andersen said JosĂ© would have the boys shower with him after tennis practice. He told the jury: âAs soon as JosĂ© took either one of the boys into their room, the door was locked behind them, and Kitty made clear you did not go down the hallway.â Another cousin, Diane Vander Molen, testified that Lyle had confided in her about the abuse when he was just eight years old. She said he had asked to sleep in her room one night âbecause his father and him had been touching each other down there, indicating that it was his genital areaâ.
Nevertheless, prosecutors argued that even if Lyle and Erik were abused, it didnât give them the right to kill. They pointed to the therapy confession, during which they did not mention self-defence or fearing for their lives. The brothers were retried and found guilty after a first trial ended with jurors deadlocked. Both were convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life. âEric and Lyle MenĂ©ndez have been incarcerated for 34 years and six months, and I believe that they are in prison for killing their lifelong abusers,â Rand says. âThe correct verdict for the MenĂ©ndez brothers trial should have been manslaughter, not murder.â
Over the past three decades, Rand has conducted countless interviews with MenĂ©ndez family members and JosĂ©âs affiliates. Last year, another alleged victim of JosĂ©âs abuse came forward. In the 2023 Peacock docuseries Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed (co-produced by Rand), Roy RossellĂł, a former member of the Puerto Rican boy band sensation Menudo, claims he was drugged and raped by JosĂ© when he was a teenager. At the time, JosĂ© was the head of RCA Records. âWe believe that Roy was âgiftedâ to JosĂ© MenĂ©ndez after JosĂ© signed Menudo to a $30m contract,â Rand tells me. In the documentary, Erik tells Rand from prison: âI always hoped and believed that one day the truth about my dad would come out. But I never wished for it to come out like this: the result of trauma that another child has suffered.â
The day after the documentary premiered, appellate attorneys for the MenĂ©ndez brothers filed a habeas petition to vacate their 1996 convictions based on new evidence. The petition lists RossellĂłâs revelations and a letter written from Erik to his cousin, Andy Cano, in December 1988 â months before the murders. In the letter, which Rand was given by JosĂ©âs younger sister and Andyâs mother, Marta Cano, an 18-year-old Erik writes: âIâve been trying to avoid dad. Itâs still happening, Andy, but itâs worse for me now… Every night I stay up thinking he might come in… Iâm afraid… Heâs crazy. Heâs warned me a hundred times about telling anyone, especially Lyle.â
The brothersâ attorneys are now hoping they will be resentenced to time served and let out of prison. They are now aged 53 and 56. Thanks to events like the #MeToo movement, Rand argues, our understanding of abuse victims has changed drastically since the MenĂ©ndez siblings first went on trial. Lyleâs prosecutor, Pam Bozanich, for instance, had even argued in the Nineties that âmen could not be raped, because they lack the necessary equipment to be rapedâ.
âBack in 1993, I interviewed every juror after the first trial,â Rand says. âAll the women voted for manslaughter. All the men voted for murder. All the men said to me, âWell, a father would never do that to his sons, right?â … I think that we have evolved as a society over the past 30 years and we are much more willing to accept that these things really do happen, not only to women, but also to men.â
âMonsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Storyâ arrives on Netflix on Thursday 19 September

Strictly star Nick Knowles shares health update after arm injury
Strictly Come Dancingâs Nick Knowles has shared a health update after injuring his arm.
The DIY SOS presenter, 62, shared a video of himself, with his arm in a makeshift sling, as he made his way to Harley Street to seek medical advice after he injured himself while changing a tyre on his car at the weekend.
He told his followers: âAs you can see my arm is in a sling and thatâs because my car broke down at the side of the motorway. I had my little boy in the car, so I wanted to change the tyre as quickly as possible. In the process of hurrying to get the wheel off, I managed to damage my shoulder and arm a little. Iâm not sure how, but itâs been quite painful.â
Knowles, who is currently competing in Strictly alongside professional dancer Luba Mushtuck, explained he wasnât sure what the injury might be, but he was on his way to get some âtop medical adviceâ.
He assured fans he was still expecting to dance this weekend in the second week of the competition, and was determined to still attend rehearsals after his appointment to âlearn the footworkâ for his routine.
Though he admitted his injury was ânot idealâ, he said: âIâm convinced itâs not something thatâs going to stop me dancing this weekend.â
The injury comes after Knowles performed his first live show of Strictly on Saturday night, and received a score of 18 for his jive to âWe Built This Cityâ by Starship.

“TV” habla sobre estar en un punto muy vulnerable en tu vida y darte cuenta que poco a poco estĂĄs perdiendo a las personas que te importan.
// Lyrics; Billie Eilish – âTV //
[Verse 1]
I don’t wanna talk right now
I just wanna watch TV
I’ll stay in the pool and drown
So I don’t have to watch you leave
I put on Survivor just to watch somebody suffer
Maybe I should get some sleep
Sinking in the sofa while they all betray each other
What’s the point of anything?
[Chorus]
All of my friends are missing again
That’s what happens when you fall in love
You don’t have the time, you leave them all behind
You tell yourself it’s fine, you’re just in love
[Verse 2]
Don’t know where you are right now
Did you see me on TV?
I’ll try not to starve myself
Just because you’re mad at me
And I’ll be in denial for at least a little while
What about the plans we made?
The internet’s gone wild watching movie stars on trial
While they’re overturning Roe v. Wade
[Chorus]
Now all of my friends are missing again
‘Cause that’s what happens when you fall in love
You don’t have the time, you leave them all behind
And you tell yourself it’s fine, you’re just in love
[Bridge]
And I don’t get along with anyone
Maybe I’m the problem
Maybe I’m the problem
[Outro]
Maybe I, maybe I, maybe I’m the problem
Maybe I, maybe I, maybe I’m the problem
Maybe I, maybe I, maybe I’m the problem
Maybe I, maybe I, maybe I’m the problem
Maybe I, maybe I, maybe I’m the problem
Maybe I, maybe I, maybe I’m the problem
Baby, I, baby, I, baby, I’m the problem
Baby, I, baby, I, baby, I’m the problem
Baby, I, baby, I, baby, I’m the problem
Baby, I, baby, I, baby, I’m the problem
Baby, I, baby, I, baby, I’m the problem

Kelsey Grammer says âI donât want to hate anybodyâ after being asked about his political views
Frasier star Kelsey Grammer has opened up on his political views following the release of the second season of the rebooted show and shared how he would want the beloved sitcom to come to an end.
Grammer starred as psychiatrist Frasier Crane for 11 seasons of the hit show, which originally aired from 1993 to 2004 as a spin-off to the character that first debuted in Cheers in 1984.
In 2023, a 10-episode revival saw Grammer reprise his role as the titular therapist as he returns to Boston, where his son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) has just started college.
Season one of the reboot on Paramount+ was greeted with lukewarm reviews with The Independentâs Nick Hilton awarding it 3 out of 5 stars and writing: â The showâs spirit is still here, the endearing snobbery remains, and so does the title â but none of the new stuff in this reboot really works.â
Season two premiered on 19 September on Paramount+ to mixed responses from fans and critics.
Speaking to The New York Times, Grammer, who is a Republican and a supporter of Donald Trump, was also asked about his political views in the interview and being one of the few outspoken conservatives in Hollywood.
The X-Men star said: âFor me to be anything else would be a problem. I donât go along with a lot of what is preached in Hollywood.
He added: âI go along with what is preached in Christianity. I go along with do unto others as you would have others do unto you. And I believe in all people: I believe in their desires and their lives and their worth. I want to make shows about that. I donât want to hate anybody.â
Grammer was also asked how he would finally like Frasier to come to a conclusion. The 69-year-old actor said that he would like to end it with a quote from the Alfred Tennyson poem âUlysses.â
He said: âIn the last show, I want to quote Tennyson, âUlyssesâ: âTo strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.â Thatâs the way I want it to end, with a sense that there is still a beginning, an unknown, a place to go.â

Most recently Grammer was snubbed by the Emmy Awards as the Frasier reboot was overlooked. He had traditionally been something of an Emmys favourite: He was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor for playing the same character in the sitcom Cheers in 1988 and 1990.
He was then nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor every year from 1994 to 2002, and again in 2004, for the original run of Frasier. He won four times (1994, 1995, 1998 and 2004), and picked up another Emmy in 2006 for his voiceover work as Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons.

John Barrowman responds after quitting Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins | Culture
John Barrowman vomited as he quit Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins after 32 minutes during the first episode on Sunday, 22 September.
The Doctor Who actor, 57, joined stars such as Strictly Come Dancing contestant Pete Wicks and Boris Johnsonâs sister Rachel to take part in gruelling SAS winter warfare training in the south islands of New Zealand.
He declared âIâm doneâ after throwing up during the first challenge.
Speaking to The Sun afterwards, Barrowman said his vomiting was due to being âmade to eat vile tofuâ before the task.
âI would never eat tofu in my life, but youâre so hungry, you just eat it,â he added.

When flipping through the settings to show us what to do, slow the flipping down. You go into the settings to show us where to find them but you flip so quick, it is hard to follow

If I pay more than a âŹ1000 I wanna see those color pop and this means vivid with high contrast. It always gets the most out of your television. It even makes the hdr pop more. I will never choose movie accuracy. It makes the image yellow and dull. Real life looks nothing like that and I don't care. I †my high contrast images

Please help me. I just bought an LG C4 OLED TV and I can't get the picture right no matter what I do. When I watch 4K movies on physical media it just doesn't look right. The faces look kind of fuzzy. I've researched the hell out of this and I still can't figure it out. When I play 4K content on streaming platforms like planet Earth it looks amazing absolutely stunning but when I play physical media it's a different story

First thing I did on my last two TV's is turn motion smoothing off. I found it too aggressive and so much movement unnatural. Watching sports was a nightmare on it.

Oh Lord ! Thatâs exactly what was happening to my Sony X90L đ€Šââïž I couldnât explain with words the problem âsoap opera effectâ đĄ I have made some adjustments and it has improved a lot the video quality but still no close to my old Samsung, ainât going to blame the tv yet, I need to dedicate more time to the settings to see if finally Iâm able to get a decent video âčïž
Update: my X90L image has improved a lot after dedicating and understanding better those âsophisticatedâ settings, however when I tune any LIVE channel news still can see those âsoap operaâ faces âčïžany suggestions? đ

There is a new law that requires TV manufacturers to add a new 'feature' called ENERGY SAVINGS. This feature reduces the brightness far too much. Simply search for the hidden menu, look for either an ambient light sensor or energy savings and turn it off. You will be amazed!

Funnily enough, when I follow guides like this, tailored to my specific tv, to make the colours pop or get the best image, I go back to fabric settings immediatly, because that looks WAY better. WAY BETTER.

Stop with the boring introduction. Bad music, asks for likes subscription, an introduction long before content. The thumbnail got me here, the first 1 minute made me avoid the rest.

I have a TCL that had a great image. Just recently on You Tube, the lower right side lowers in brightness like when the next clip shows and the image dims. TV channels and any other screen is perfect including Netflix. Just You Tube. Any ideas why? I would really appreciate it. Thank you. Mike
