Whoopi Goldberg defends Nicole Scherzinger after Russell Brand Jesus hat controversy: ‘It’s just a hat’
Whoopi Goldberg and her fellow panelists on The View have defended Nicole Scherzinger after the former Pussycat Dolls star became embroiled in a controversy over Russell Brand’s Jesus hat.
The singer sparked a fierce backlash after commenting “Where do I get this hat!!!?” on an Instagram post showing Brand holding a red baseball cap with the slogan: “Make Jesus First Again.”
Brand’s post celebrated Donald Trump’s 2024 US presidential election win, and many fans online interpreted Scherzinger’s comment to be a message of support for the president-elect.
The backlash was so severe that many speculated it might harm Scherzinger’s chances of winning a Tony for her acclaimed Broadway performance as Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd.
However, on today’s (November 11) episode of The View, several panelists came to Scherzinger’s defense.
Ana Navarro said: “Emotions are so raw. It’s overkill. I think people are losing their minds. Right now social media is a rough, rough place to be. You can literally post a picture of puppies and there will be people attacking you. Every day I get thousands of people telling me to ‘go eat another burrito and go back to Mexico.’ I ain’t going anywhere.”
Sara Haines added that “the mob mentality on social media” is “poisonous and toxic,” and said: “People are calling for her to not be nominated for a Tony. This has gotten out of control.”
On Friday (November 8), Scherzinger took to Instagram to apologize for her comment: “I deeply apologize for the hurt caused by my recent engagement with some social media posts.
“When I commented on these posts, I made the mistake of not realizing they could easily be interpreted as being politically related and I apologize to anyone who understandably reached that conclusion.”

She continued: “Many presumptions are being drawn, which do not reflect who I am, what I stand for, or who I voted for.
“Many of the marginalized communities feeling hurt and concerned by the results of the presidential election are people I care about most. I stand with them, as I always have, throughout my life and career. If you know me, you know that.”
On The View, Navarro argued that Scherzinger “shouldn’t have apologized” as she had nothing to be sorry for. She then joked: “Does this mean I can get tickets now for the show because it was very sold out.”
Goldberg replied: “And it’s still going to be very sold out.”
“She’s brilliant in the show,” Goldberg added. “She liked a hat. Relax. She liked a hat about Jesus. I would think that would be a unifying thing. It’s a hat. It’s just a hat.”

Una Healy, Myleene Klass and Kelly Brook dazzle at star-studded Gladiator 2 world premiere in London
UNA Healy, Myleene Klass and Kelly Brook have wowed on the red carpet at the star-studded world premiere for Gladiator 2.
Former Saturdays star Una had all eyes on her as she posed for pictures in a stunning gold gown.
Una’s long-sleeved metallic frock had a plunging neckline and dramatic thigh high split and she coordinated it with a dark brown manicure.
Myleene, meanwhile, also opted for a touch of sparkle and wore a stunning long green dress for the showbiz event.
The Loose Women and radio star’s sequinned gown showed off her slender frame thanks to its thin spaghetti straps and low back.
Kelly Brook, who presents on Heart FM, chose an entirely different style of red carpet outfit for the wintery premiere.
As temperatures dropped, she kept off the chill with a statement black dress, matching shawl and grey heels.
Kelly’s long ombre hair was curled loosely and she added some glamour with a star-embellished tiara.
Gladiator 2 has been dubbed by many as “the best movie of the year”.
Lead star, Irish actor Paul Mescal, 28, looked seriously suave on the red carpet at the Royal Film Performance and Global Premiere in London’s Leicester Square.
The Normal People actor has revealed he was a ‘quivering wreck’ the first time he met Gladiator 2 director Ridley Scott.
In an interview with DJ Chris Evans, Paul has admitted he will quit Hollywood blockbusters if the pressures of fame become too much.
Chatting on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with The National Lottery on Virgin Radio UK, Paul said: “There’s enough information out there about how damaging this career can be to people’s fundamental life.
“So I’m not going to take a risk if it comes to that. I’m not going to push through that.”
Gladiator 2 will be released in UK cinemas on November 22.

Dick Van Dyke, 98, makes dark joke about Trump’s second term
Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke has reacted in disdain to Donald Trump’s second-term presidential win after previously endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Mary Poppins star, who turns 99 next month, was recently out and about with his 52-year-old wife, Arlene Silver, when he was approached by a reporter and asked if he thought the future looked bright for America.
“I hope you’re right,” Dyke can be heard telling the reporter in a clip published by The Daily Mail.
When asked if he thinks Trump is capable of making America great again, the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor quipped: “Fortunately, I won’t be around to experience the four years.”
The former Dick Van Dyke Show star’s grim response comes shortly after he announced he would be voting for Harris.
“Fifty years ago – May 31st, 1964 – I was on the podium with Dr Martin Luther King, who was addressing some of the 60,000 people in the Colosseum in LA,” he said in a video posted to his YouTube channel.
While encouraging his fans to also vote for Harris, he went on to recite a speech he once read alongside the great activist and minister.
“Hatred is not the norm. Prejudice is not the norm. Suspicion, dislike, jealousy, scapegoating, none of those are the transcendent facets of the human personality,” Dyke began. “They are diseases. They are the cancers of the soul. They are the infectious and contagious viruses that have been breeding humanity for years.
“And because they have been and because they are, is it necessary that they shall be? I think not.”
The actor continued, saying there is “essential decency,” “basic goodness” and “preeminent dignity” in everyone.

“There will be moments of violence and expressions of hatred and an ugly echo of intolerance, but these are the clinging vestiges of a decayed past, not the harbingers of the better, cleaner future,” he added.
In conclusion, he paraphrased a quote from Horace Mann, saying: “Let us be ashamed to live without that victory.”
Dyke joins a slew of other celebrities who are outraged by the President-elect’s historic victory.
“Heartbroken,” One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush posted on Instagram: “Great job giving the MAGA gang more power, America. Wonder how many folks are seeing this and STILL saying ‘But but but at least he’s not a Black woman!’ in the privacy of their homes tonight.”
“Supreme Court gone for the rest of my lifetime. Ultra-conservative evangelical bigotry, xenophobia, racism is the mandate,” tweeted Glee alum Kevin McHale.
While addressing the claims of sexual assault levied against Trump, Riverdale star Lili Reinhart added: “I cannot fathom the feeling of the women who came forward about their sexual assault at the hands of Trump. Seeing millions of people vote for their abuser. My heart, absolutely, breaks for these women. I believe you, and I am so sorry.”
Meanwhile, Trump supporters, including influencer-turned-professional boxer Jake Paul, celebrated the Republican party’s triumph, calling it “a massive step in the right direction to heal the major issues going on in the world currently.”
