With His New WWII Movie, Russell Crowe Is Snapping at Jason Statham’s Heels on All-Time Box Office Charts

Star Russell Crowe might be going through a rough patch at the box office, but despite the lukewarm launch of his latest film, the World War II drama Nuremberg, he’s firmly among the 100 highest-grossing stars in domestic box office history. Crowe is also set to overtake one of the biggest action stars of his generation, Jason Statham. Nuremberg opened last week to mostly positive reviews, but struggled to secure a spot for itself on the top five list. It barely out-grossed the Emma Stone vehicle Bugonia, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, while Predator: Badlands exceeded expectations at the top of the list.

But Nuremberg‘s $3.8 million opening weekend haul has pushed Crowe’s cumulative domestic box office earnings to a stunning $1.788 billion. He’s now positioned at number 97 on the all-time list, ahead of Reese Witherspoon and Ralph Fiennes, and just overtaking Statham’s $1.781 billion cumulative haul. Interestingly, both stars also have a similar number of movies to their credit: Crowe has 45 and Statham at 44. The average domestic haul of Crowe’s films stands at just under $40 million, with the list being topped by Gladiator, for which he also won an Oscar. However, the biggest movies in which he has been a part of the ensemble are Thor: Love and Thunder and Man of Steel.

Written and directed by James Vanderbilt, Nuremberg features Crowe as the high-ranking Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring. The movie follows the battle of wits that Göring found himself in against an American psychiatrist, played by fellow Oscar-winner Rami Malek, during the Nuremberg trials. The movie also features Leo Woodall and John Slattery as supporting performers, and is sitting at a 69% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus on the platform reads, “Driven by a commanding performance from Russell Crowe, Nuremberg is a handsomely crafted historical drama, but its measured pacing and emotional restraint keep it from fully realizing the complexity of its subject.”

Russell Crowe’s Last Major Hit Was ‘Noah’, Over a Decade Ago

Crowe has had a hit-or-miss run in the few years. He has starred in the derided horror movie The Exorcism, which earned a dreadful D grade on CinemaScore. He also played a supporting role in the franchise-killing superhero film Kraven the Hunter, but delivered a modest hit with The Pope’s Exorcist. Meanwhile, Rami Malek last headlined the sleeper hit thriller The Amateur, while Statham starred in A Working Man — both movies made just under $100 million globally.

You can watch Nuremberg in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
