Florence Pugh Is British Vogue’s October 2024 Cover Star

I still remember my first fashion show. The brand was Preen, the year circa 2002, and I’d just started my first job in journalism on the features desk at the Evening Standard magazine. Its designers, Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton, founded their label out of a small boutique in Portobello Green where I’d discovered their deconstructed designs as a teenager some years prior. By this point, though, they were producing full-on runway collections, and would soon be dressing the likes of Amy Winehouse, so the ticket I’d snagged – albeit standing – was pretty hot. The rush I felt as the lights went up, as the soundtrack roared (was that an actual lion we heard?) and the models came stomping out was so worth it, even from the nosebleeds.

The power of the runway to propel you into a new mood, a new moment, that you had to be there feeling, never gets old for me, even two decades on. That’s why I’m especially excited about Vogue: Inventing the Runway, an immersive exhibition celebrating the history of the modern fashion show soon to open at Lightroom in London. Hamish Bowles’s piece in the issue gives a fantastic overview of what to expect, the breadth of which is truly astonishing – did you know that the first fashion presentations didn’t use real people, and that up until the 1850s miniature dolls were used in the place of living, breathing models? To accompany the story, there’s also an exquisite potted pictorial history reimagined by photographer Mikael Jansson and styled by contributing fashion editor Ib Kamara.

Elsewhere in the issue, Neneh Cherry, a personal fashion hero of mine, who has probably influenced my sense of style more than any one fashion show, takes us for a delightful trip into her own sartorial past. The stories she shares in anticipation of her new memoir can only be described as fabulous, including the moment the singer was sewn into her Alaïa wedding dress by the legendary couturier himself. Meanwhile, author Jilly Cooper takes a romp down memory lane as she reflects on the deliciously salacious exploits that inspired her titillating 1980s novel Rivals and the current nostalgia for those unapologetically brash and bombastic times. Naturally, I am eagerly awaiting the eight-part Disney+ TV adaptation for what I’m sure will be a marathon post-fashion month binge-watching session.

Like writer Raven Smith, who interviewed Florence Pugh for this month’s cover story, I cried my eyes out at a screening of the British actor’s much-anticipated new film, We Live in Time. (Thankfully, the only other colleague who witnessed said emotional outburst IRL was also in tears.) Pugh has a rare gift for tapping the soul of a character. She’s also brimming with humanity, grounded in ways that so few movie stars of her calibre are. And as Smith discovers, she is more confident and comfortable in her skin than ever. In her words, the most important thing is “that I’m a good person, and people feel good in my presence”.

Rappers who Broke Genders Norms with Women‘s Clothing #diddy #youngthug #jadensmith #kidcudi #shorts

In recent years, several male rappers have embraced fashion styles that challenge traditional gender norms, incorporating elements typically associated with women’s fashion. This style is often characterized by fluidity, androgyny, and a bold rejection of conventional masculine stereotypes. Here’s a closer look:

1. **Androgynous Fashion**: Artists like Young Thug have been pioneers in breaking down gender barriers in rap fashion. He has famously worn dresses, skirts, and sheer fabrics in both his music videos and public appearances. This androgynous style reflects a growing acceptance of fluidity in both gender and fashion, allowing rappers to express themselves more freely without conforming to rigid masculine standards.

2. **High-Fashion Influence**: Some rappers, such as Lil Uzi Vert and Jaden Smith, mix high-fashion with feminine elements. They wear items like blouses, tight-fitting clothing, handbags, and even skirts, often drawing from high-end designers like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Rick Owens. Their style often combines traditionally feminine silhouettes with more neutral or streetwear-inspired pieces, creating a hybrid, avant-garde look.

3. **Makeup and Accessories**: Beyond clothing, some male rappers have embraced traditionally feminine accessories and makeup. Jewelry like pearl necklaces, earrings, nail polish, and eyeliner have become part of their everyday looks, further blurring the lines between masculine and feminine aesthetics. A$AP Rocky, for example, is known for wearing pearl necklaces and experimenting with bold fashion choices that push gender norms.

This trend reflects a larger cultural shift toward inclusivity and self-expression, showing that in rap, fashion can be a powerful tool for challenging stereotypes and expressing individuality.
