How the Dutton Family Tree Connects 1883, 1923, and Yellowstone
Even after the Yellowstone series finale in 2024, the Dutton family saga continues through its prequels. The Yellowstone series timeline features two more neo-western drama series, 1883 and 1923, which serve as origin stories, exploring the Duttons’ lineage across generations as the central focus. These series connect directly to Yellowstone, shedding light on the family’s history and significance in understanding the Dutton family legacy.
The Origins – 1883
The 1883 TV series is the starting point of the Duttons’ saga, featuring their ancestors, James and Margaret Dutton, alongside Shea Brennan and their journey in the west, while facing the challenges of the frontier, and ultimately starting the Yellowstone ranch, which shaped their future generations. As the story itself takes place in 1883, this Yellowstone prequel deeply incorporates the Old West culture and frontier legacy.
Key Events in 1883
The story of 1883 revolves around migration, challenges, and the foundation of Duttons’ legacy, featuring significant characters and their struggling journey, which includes Shea Brennan and James and Margaret Dutton’s tragic family losses. Here are the key events in 1883 that initiated the Yellowstone series and transitions towards its sequels.
- The beginning of 1883 starts with the first of the Duttons embarking on a journey from Texas to Montana, searching for a better life, with James Dutton serving as the family leader, who leads his family through harsh conditions.
- The Duttons are a part of the wagon train heading to Oregon, which is led by Shea Brennan and Thomas, who guides the group, as they face challenges like violent weather, dangerous landscapes, and conflicts with native americans.
- Elsa Dutton (James’ Daughter) emerges as one of the central figures in the story. However, during the accident with one of the tribes, Elsa dies from being shot by an arrow. Having faced tragedies and life-threatening challenges, the Duttons chose to settle in Montana, with the story ending with James standing firm on his newly claimed land, building a foundation for the Dutton Family Legacy in Montana that transitions to the next generation of Duttons in 1923.
Family Tree Connections
However, after James’s death, his brother Jacob later became the next patriarch. Meanwhile, James’ sons, John Dutton I and Spencer, grow and become the following key characters in 1923, alongside Jacob Dutton.
The Next Generation – 1923
With the story of 1883 coming to its end, the history of Duttons’ continues in the next Yellowstone prequel, 1923. The sequel to the 1883 series, the story revolves around the second generation of the Duttons, featuring Jacob, Cara, and John I In the post-WWI era of the western legacy, where the US had an alcohol ban, the family faced challenges with the law and rivals to protect their land.
The Struggles of 1923
Showcasing conflicts and struggles in the early Montana society against land disputes, the Jacob and Cara Dutton struggled to protect the Yellowstone ranch from harsh winter, outside pressure, and economic hardships, with rivals like Banner Creighton, who caused land disputes.
At the same time, the story revolves around other characters, such as the brothers John I. and Spencer. John I. marries and becomes father to Jack Dutton, while Spencer, on the other hand, suffers from World War I trauma and is requested to help his family, as he builds his relationship with Alexandra.
However, near the end of the story, John I. is killed off, and Spencer is detained for killing Earl Arthur in self-defense in Italy. With epilogue of the story focuses on Spencer and Alex’s tragic reunion, the war for the Yellowstone, and the Farewell of the legacy, with a flash forward to 1963, where Spencer peacefully dies at Alex’s grave.
Connecting 1923 to Yellowstone
As generations pass, the Yellowstone family lineage continues through John Dutton I’s son, Jack Dutton.
Eventually, the legacy passes to John Dutton II, the father of John Dutton III, the modern patriarch of Yellowstone.
Present Day – Yellowstone
Now, onto the present day, the Yellowstone series family tree now focuses on the story of John Dutton III and his children Beth, Jamie, and Kayce. Featuring the modern Yellowstone ranch and the John Dutton Family. And as always, the Duttons face challenges and struggles by law and their rivals, with the Duttons taking matters into their own hand for the sake of preserving their ranch, refusing to adapt to the inevitability of modernity, the family reflects a vicious side, as John converts his children’s trauma into a sense of duty that represents loyalty for the family.
Influence of 1883 and 1923 on Yellowstone
Throughout the series and prequels, it’s become clearer and more prominent why the Yellowstone ranch history drives the choices of John Dutton III, how his ancestors struggled to protect the land and family legacy, and what John’s actual duty is meant to be for the sake of their land and ranch, representing Duttons’ values and tradition.

Monica Wore a Marc Jacobs Leapord Spring 2025 look to the brands NYFW Show
Monica shut it down at the Marc Jacobs Spring 2026 show on Monday held at the Park Avenue Armory in leopard oversized coat that screamed fierce.

After just coming off tour with Brandy, Monica is back on the scene showcasing the most chicest ensembles like the true fashionista she is.

Layering over a black turtle neck, and styling with black pointy toe thigh high boots, her leopard coat was a stand out moment. With a dramatized collar, and large black buttons down the center, her coat, this was the perfect bold choice.

When it came down to her glam, she took us back to the 1960’s with a fabulous updo. With a slick high pony tail, and curled bangs, she owned this hairdo.

What say you? Hot! Or Hmmm….?

What Is Your Everyday Makeup Routine?

It’s been a few years since we discussed, ladies — what is your everyday makeup routine? What have you added in the past few years, and what have you subtracted? What have you started doing differently? Is there anything in your makeup routine that you keep doing even though it isn’t trendy? (If you’re on Zoom or other video calls all day, how have you varied your makeup?)
For my $.02, I feel like I’ve added more into my routine than I had before — I’ve been better about going to the gym lately and all of those mirrors makes me realize I feel better if I’m wearing blush, brows, and concealer!
For nights out, for no reason whatsoever I’ve mostly stopped contouring — I feel like I don’t have sufficient patience for the blending required, and I’d rather look, well, uncontoured than walk around with an obvious unblended patch on my neck or something.
In the past, I’ve shared my tips for dark circles beneath your eyes and my favorite cream/liquid blushes, the Corporette staff has chimed in on whether we use foundation, BB cream, or something else. We’ve also discussed interview makeup tips, makeup tips for people who wear glasses, and discussed how makeup routines can differ based on work/weekend/party.
My Latest Short Makeup Routine

As of 2026, my short makeup routine is pretty boring — curled eyelashes + concealer + blush (NARS Orgasm) + eyebrow + powder, with a different lipstick and eyeliner depending on my mood. If I’m feeling extra fancy I’ll add mascara, highlighter, and/or do my brows with this cream and a brush similar to this one (here’s my review). (I also add eye shadows in the “extra” days but it’s a huge variety, maybe 25 or so different ones.)
Some favorite lipglosses and lipsticks include Dior Addict Lip Glow, NARS gloss (Orgasm, Fast Lane), Clinique Chubby Sticks and Clinique (Black Honey). I use this NYX lipliner (Natural) for almost all of them. For more color I like MERIT’s Millennial pink and Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk.
My favorite blushes as of 2026 include liquid and cream blushes like Youthforia, MILK, and NARS the Multiple, as well as powders like Diorshow’s Backstage Rosy Glow and NARS (in Orgasm). I also have NARS’s liquid blush in three different colors.
My favorite eyeliners as of 2026: Chanel (Espresso), Urban Decay (Sabbath, Smoke), and a lot of brown and black options from the drugstore like NYX. I also love this Bobbi Brown eyeshadow liner for days without mascara, something about it feels soft yet complete.

Wednesday’s Workwear Report: Commuter Cardigan
This post may contain affiliate links and Corporette® may earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
If you’re looking for a stylish way to stay cozy during yet another cold snap, look no further than this wrap cardigan from Aritzia. Where I live, we’ve been below freezing temperatures for weeks, and I think that deep V-neck is probably not in the cards for me right now. I would probably add a thin turtleneck for a little extra coverage.
This sweater comes in five lovely colors, but this “birch” color looks like it would be beautifully versatile.
The sweater is $138 at Aritzia and comes in sizes 2XS-XL.
