How to create festive holiday outfits from your closet

Published

festive holiday outfits from your closet

For years, I thought I needed a new and interesting outfit for every holiday event. Thankfully, there is an easier and cheaper way to enjoy winter festivities. The secret’s hiding in plain sight — in your closet.

Truth is, you probably already own most of the pieces required to build several polished, fun holiday party outfits. Maybe you invest in a few fun accessories or a new nail color. At worst, a cute top or two might be on your shopping list. But you shouldn’t need more than that to party through this holiday season in style.

Let’s talk about how to shop your closet for festive holiday outfits.

Start with a quick inventory

Your first step is to spend some time in your closet, taking stock of what you have. Pieces that can be excellent building blocks for holiday party outfits include:

  • Layering basics in the right colors. Turtlenecks and long-sleeved tops in dark or metallic colors can add drama to warm-weather dresses.
  • Tidy, versatile bottoms. Dark-wash jeans, black pencil skirts, and wide-leg pants can easily anchor outfits for more casual holiday gatherings.
  • Textures. Faux leathers, silks, velvets, and soft knits can elevate simple outfits to party-worthy in a flash.
  • Pieces in power colors. Blouses and skirts in gold, silver, bronze, or red could be your MVPs this party season.
  • Statement shoes and bags. Embellished shoes or bags can upgrade basics in the same way textures can.
  • Dresses and jumpsuits. It only takes a bold accessory to refresh — and rewear — an old LBD or LBJ.

Choose a color strategy

You don’t need head-to-toe sequins to look holiday ready. A few intentional color choices can shift an everyday outfit into that party vibe.

  • Aim for classic holiday palettes. Think red with black, ivory with gold, black with silver, or emerald with navy.
  • Opt for monochrome. An outfit that relies on a single color can be quite dramatic in December, especially if you include textural variation. Black, silver, dark greys, and even red are candidates.
  • Pair neutral with a pop of color. A red sweater or a jewel-toned scarf easily draws the eyes away from the black skirt you’ve worn 100 times.

Lean on outfit formulas that work

These outfit formulas can inspire if nothing in your closet speaks to you.

Occasion Outfit Ideas
Casual parties – Jeans with a silky top and sparkly earrings
– Sweater dress with tall boots, neck scarf, and textured bag
Office parties – Black dress with textured tights and statement jewelry
– Blazer, cami, and trousers plus metallic shoes
Cocktail parties – Long black dress with metallic clutch and your finest jewelry
– Flowy wide-leg pants, silky top, velvet blazer, and strappy heels
At-home hosting – Soft sweater and tidy denim, plus an upswept hairstyle, drop earrings, and ankle boots
– Midi skirt and cropped, close-fitting sweater, and flats

Repurpose first

Once you have an outfit idea in mind, look through your single-use pieces to see what you can repurpose. You don’t need to hire a seamstress. For example, you could:

  • Update a summer slip dress by adding a turtleneck underneath or a sweater over the top. Add tights if you need extra warmth. The silky texture of that slip dress will fit right into the holiday party scene.
  • Reuse a wedding guest dress by wearing it like a skirt. Add a blouse or sweater over the top and reach for boots instead of heels.
  • Pair work trousers – or a pencil skirt — with a slinky or lace cami, fine jewelry, and sexy heels for a sophisticated evening look.

Finish with accessories and makeup

Ideally, you can build the bones of holiday outfits from your closet and limit your shopping to accessories and makeup. Some purchases that can bring the holiday drama include:

  • Statement jewelry
  • Metallic clutch
  • Satin blouse
  • Sparkly or velvet shoes
  • Red lipstick or gold nail color
  • Smokey eyeshadow

Here are some picks from Amazon for inspiration.

You wouldn’t combine all of these into one outfit, but you could use one or two. For example, you might opt for a smokey eye and velvet shoes but then go monochrome on your outfit and nude on your lips and nails. You need that balance between bold and understated. Otherwise, you may end up looking more Halloween than holiday.

Inspiration from Instagram

If the creative juices aren’t flowing yet, these completed Instagram looks should give you some ideas.

Holiday outfits that don’t break your budget

You don’t need a new outfit for every December event. You just need to get creative with what’s already in your closet. Pull out the textures, play with color, lean on accessories, and remix pieces you haven’t worn together before.

Layering over a black turtle neck, and styling with black pointy toe thigh high boots, her leopard coat was a stand out moment. With a dramatized collar, and large black buttons down the center, her coat, this was the perfect bold choice.

When it came down to her glam, she took us back to the 1960’s with a fabulous updo. With a slick high pony tail, and curled bangs, she owned this hairdo.

It’s been a few years since we discussed, ladies — what is your everyday makeup routine? What have you added in the past few years, and what have you subtracted? What have you started doing differently? Is there anything in your makeup routine that you keep doing even though it isn’t trendy? (If you’re on Zoom or other video calls all day, how have you varied your makeup?)

For my $.02, I feel like I’ve added more into my routine than I had before — I’ve been better about going to the gym lately and all of those mirrors makes me realize I feel better if I’m wearing blush, brows, and concealer!

For nights out, for no reason whatsoever I’ve mostly stopped contouring — I feel like I don’t have sufficient patience for the blending required, and I’d rather look, well, uncontoured than walk around with an obvious unblended patch on my neck or something.

In the past, I’ve shared my tips for dark circles beneath your eyes and my favorite cream/liquid blushes, the Corporette staff has chimed in on whether we use foundation, BB cream, or something else. We’ve also discussed interview makeup tips, makeup tips for people who wear glasses, and discussed how makeup routines can differ based on work/weekend/party.

My Latest Short Makeup Routine

As of 2026, my short makeup routine is pretty boring — curled eyelashes + concealer + blush (NARS Orgasm) + eyebrow + powder, with a different lipstick and eyeliner depending on my mood. If I’m feeling extra fancy I’ll add mascara, highlighter, and/or do my brows with this cream and a brush similar to this one (here’s my review). (I also add eye shadows in the “extra” days but it’s a huge variety, maybe 25 or so different ones.)

Some favorite lipglosses and lipsticks include Dior Addict Lip Glow, NARS gloss (Orgasm, Fast Lane), Clinique Chubby Sticks and Clinique (Black Honey). I use this NYX lipliner (Natural) for almost all of them. For more color I like MERIT’s Millennial pink and Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk.

My favorite blushes as of 2026 include liquid and cream blushes like Youthforia, MILK, and NARS the Multiple, as well as powders like Diorshow’s Backstage Rosy Glow and NARS (in Orgasm). I also have NARS’s liquid blush in three different colors.

My favorite eyeliners as of 2026: Chanel (Espresso), Urban Decay (Sabbath, Smoke), and a lot of brown and black options from the drugstore like NYX. I also love this Bobbi Brown eyeshadow liner for days without mascara, something about it feels soft yet complete.

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

If you’re looking for a stylish way to stay cozy during yet another cold snap, look no further than this wrap cardigan from Aritzia. Where I live, we’ve been below freezing temperatures for weeks, and I think that deep V-neck is probably not in the cards for me right now. I would probably add a thin turtleneck for a little extra coverage.

This sweater comes in five lovely colors, but this “birch” color looks like it would be beautifully versatile.

The sweater is $138 at Aritzia and comes in sizes 2XS-XL.
