Navigation » How to find your style after breast cancer

When Dr Liz O’ Riordan asked me to be a guest on her ‘ So Now I’ve Got Breast Cancer’ podcast, of course I said yes. The former consultant breast surgeon and three-time breast cancer patient is an incredible woman. For the last 10 years, Liz has chronicled her experience and treatment as as a doctor-turned-patient, and, in another kind of Midlife Pivot, become an inspiring, award-winning speaker and author. Now, she educates healthcare professionals about what life is really like after a cancer diagnosis and offers expertise and invaluable information to women going through similar experiences.

I wanted to help Liz’s listeners but, nonetheless, I was really nervous. Fashion is often seen as frivolous and superficial, so I needed to make sure that my answers offered the best guidance and style advice possible. That I was being helpful rather than stating the bleedin’ obvious. Liz assured me that it would be fine and that her listeners would appreciate my advice on ‘learning how to dress after months in tracksuits during chemo, or using this as an opportunity to try something new’.

After the podcast aired, Liz shared a couple of positive messages she’d received, including, ‘ I thought your podcast with Alyson was brilliant. I really liked her flexible approach to what works for different individuals. I listened to it twice as I found it so informative!’

What we wear and how we feel about image and identity, throughout our lives, matters.

You can listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

And, Liz has written a new book, The Cancer Roadmap. There is so much conflicting information and misinformation out there, even from people in very high office, so in her latest book she straightforwardly ‘confronts the big cancer truths (and myths), offers clear, evidence-based answers and breaks down the latest research to give the facts.’ Published by Harper Collins, The Cancer Roadmap is out on 30 January 2025; available to pre-order HERE.

Liz O’ Riordan was a guest on my podcast in 2022, listen to the episode HERE. She also offered her excellent advice on ‘redefining your personal style after a mastectomy’ in a feature for That’s Not My Age HERE. Find out more about Liz on her website and Instagram.
