Root Lift And Rollers: Creating Florence Pugh’s ’50s Housewife Hair For British Vogue
When Florence Pugh unveiled a fresh buzzcut at the 2023 Met Gala, it made headlines. Little did the world know at the time that Andrew Garfield, Pugh’s co-star in their latest film We Live In Time, was the one who shaved her head – a fact Pugh reveals in British Vogue’s October issue. Florence, who now has a blonde crop, has had fun experimenting with different looks while growing out her number one – from slicked-back looks to mussed-up shag styles. But for her first British Vogue cover? Make it retro, please.
Created by hairstylist Evanie Frausto, the voluminous, coiffed style was giving ’50s housewife. “Venetia Scott [who styled the shoot] wanted to create a world that felt like it was from another time, and that didn’t feel too modern, so that was what inspired me initially,” he tells me. “I used loads of Bumble & Bumble’s Thickening Spray, which is really great for adding volume, but is soft and flexible, making it easy to work the hair into different shapes.”

After spraying plenty of the cult product into Pugh’s damp hair, Frausto then did an old-school blow-dry using a one-inch round brush. “It was very old salon vibes, honestly,” he explains. “I put her hair in rollers and let it set, brushing it out afterwards into the right shape.”
With a curvaceous fringe that tickles her eyebrows and curled ends, Pugh’s style is elevated by the colour – in particular, her dark roots. “I always love a bit of root to add dimension and break up the shape a bit – this style is obviously voluminous and big, and when that’s one solid colour, it can look a bit like a helmet,” Frausto points out.
Crediting Pugh for her relaxed vibe and “good energy” – not to mention the fact she brought her cute puppy onto set – Frausto certainly nailed the old-school brief. And Pugh pulls it off in a way that only she can.
