Swan sandals are a magic shoe. They are white (of course) and only appear at night. They have the appearance of a sandal but also the functionality of a shoe. They don’t merely walk, they glide. Like swans themselves, they don’t swim, they float. They are, almost always, vintage.

Margaret Qualley just wore the quintessential swan sandals on the red (or black) carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of her film The Substance. Although unlike other swan sandals (such as this undoubtedly vintage pair worn by Dakota Johnson), Qualley’s shoes are probably a little more swan than they are vintage.

Qualley’s sandals, by Chanel, undoubtedly bear all the markings of a good vintage shoe. Their design recalls the retro silhouettes of the thirties and forties, and even fifties: the thick straps crossed over the toes, the closure at the ankle and the heel neither too thin nor too thick. But in her case, all these features are overshadowed by the white colour and the delicacy with which the actress wears the pair in question.

And Qualley has put her own personal style stamp on the trend. Pairing the delicate white shoes with this balletic white tulle and sequin gown, Qualley really does look like — well — an ethereal swan.
