For most of us, this time of year is extraordinarily busy. On top of your already hectic schedule, we often add extra shopping, cooking, decorating and entertaining. And, the last thing you want to worry about is… what to wear; What to wear to the parties, dinners, dates, school performances…etc. So…when you find yourself in overwhelm and you’re staring at that pile of clothes you just tried on, remember this catchy little phrase, “When in doubt, get your black top out.”
This is your simple style strategy for success this season. When in doubt, wear a black top with dark pants or jeans, dark shoes and a few accessories. That’s it! You follow this formula and you’ll look chic Every.Single.Time. Why…? Because black tops are slimming, chic, versatile, and tend to look luxe regardless of the fabric or quality. I’m sharing five beautiful, next-level, versatile black tops I’ve picked up recently that I’ll wear again and again to help me feel confident and look chic.

Versatile Black Tops
#1 | Ramy Brook Draped Top
This is one of my favorite tops of the season! It has structured shoulders, a cowl neck, and it drapes beautifully. The gathered waistband helps create a waist and covers the top of the jeans, but it is on the shorter side, which is s consideration for those of you who are tall or have a longer torso. I’m wearing a black bralette underneath to provide more coverage, but you can try a normal black bra too. I think wearing the bralette is just easier… so you don’t have to worry about a wardrobe malfunction.
I’m sharing four more versatile black tops below. But first, let’s talk about how to style them…
Most Comfortable Jeans Ever
Styling your black top with a nice pair of jeans and a few chic accessories creates the perfect outfit for date night, dinners, GNO, parties, etc. I’m wearing a pair of jeans that deserve their own spotlight. They are maybe the most comfortable pairs of jeans I’ve ever put on my body. If you’re a longtime subscriber, you understand the gravity of that comment because I own a LOT of jeans. They’re incredibly soft and lightweight, they drape so well, aren’t tight anywhere, and feel great on the waist and tummy. I love the flattering wide legs and the loose, trouser-like fit. They run a little big, grab them in a size down from your normal size.
Chic Accessories
To complete your simple, black top outfit, you’ll want to add some chic accessories. I recently got this cute black crossbody bag by Loeffler Randall that’s chic and sophisticated, I love the woven design and the sleek gold hardware.
Next, I added a gorgeous gold necklace by Alexis Bittar with sparkly crystal pave details. You don’t need this exact necklace to recreate this look. But adding an impactful necklace to complement the v-neckline looks really nice and is a wonderful finishing touch to an outfit. You could also opt for statement earrings.
Lastly, I went with a pair of black booties by Schutz that are very versatile and basic. They have a dressy stiletto heel and flattering pointed toe. I always wear black booties during this time of year because it’s so cold and I want to be able to wear socks.
#2 | Generation Love Turtleneck
The next black top you can pull out in a pinch is this gorge ribbed mock-neck top by Generation Love. What makes this black top pop is the luxe-looking gold asymmetrical button detailing. The ribbed, thicker material will keep you nice and toasty. It’s tailored and body-skimming, but you still have some forgiveness throughout. You can wear it untucked to cover the tummy or tuck it under and it will stay put because it’s structured. I styled the top with the same jeans, booties, and bag. Because of the button details down the front, I chose to forgo a necklace, but a pair of gold earrings with this top would be really pretty.
#3 | L’Agence Poplin Cuff Sweater
This is a top that has been wildly popular over on Instagram because it’s such a great elevated basic! I love a turtleneck because it is so chic, sophisticated, and simple. This turtleneck above is SO good because it’s very lightweight to keep you cool…perfect for anyone who runs hot or has hot flashes. The white cuffs and the floral buttons are THE elevated touches that really set this turtleneck apart from the rest. The length of this top is really nice so you can leave it untucked, tuck it, or do a half tuck depending on your preference.
By the way, if you don’t love how a turtleneck highlights the chin, just fold it inwards…that’s what I did with this turtleneck to make it more of a mock neck. I styled the top with the same jeans, booties, and crossbody. Ah, the power of basics! I finished the look with a stunning statement necklace.
#4 | Ramy Brook Sequin Top
IF you looking for a ‘go-to’ holiday-ready black top…this is it! (This Ramy Brook top is very similar to #1 above.) This sequin cowl neck top is high quality so you can wear it this holiday season and for years to come. You can easily style this beauty with jeans, trousers, or skirts this holiday season.

#5 | Simkhai Off-Shoulder Top
If you want to add a little sexiness to your outfit, go with an off-shoulder or one-shoulder top like this one by Simkhai. I love the mixed fabrics…the body is a structured knit fabric and the top is a soft, shiny fabric that looks very luxe. The twisted detail is really chic and I love that you can wear the sleeves off the shoulder, on the shoulder, or as a one-shoulder. It’s a great length so I left it untucked and styled it with the same jeans and booties. This would be perfect for date night or a girls’ night out! Note: there is a side zip so it is very fitted to the body.
