Are you a narcissist? Take the 28-question 'Dark Tetrad' personality test to find out

THE TERM ‘narcissist’ is often thrown around to describe people who seem self-absorbed or have a large ego.

Have you ever wondered if it applies to you or a particularly annoying friend or colleague?

Narcissism is defined as an egotistical preoccupation with self

Now, a 28-minute test can tell you where you fall on the score of narcissism – as well as three other “negative” personality types.

The five-minute quiz, published on the website Psychological Testing Online, is an online version of the Short Dark Tetrad test, by personality psychology researcher and professor Delroy Paulhus.

It’s designed to assess a set of four interrelated personality traits that are considered to be negative or harmful, according to Psychology Today.

These are narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and sadism.

It’s noted on the website that the quiz is meant to be educational and entertaining – it can’t provide a diagnosis of narcissism and shouldn’t be used to diagnose a disease or condition or provide any sort of psychological advice.

To be formally diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder – a mental health condition characterised by impulsivity, volatility, attention-seeking, and a lack of empathy – you need to be assessed by a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Prof Paulhus defined narcissism as “an egotistical preoccupation with self”.

“Because of all their experience with maintaining their self image, people who score high for narcissism will often appear charming but their narcissism will later lead to extreme difficulty in developing close relationships,” he said

Meanwhile, Machiavellianism is described as a tendency to be manipulative and deceitful and see people as a means to achieve one’s own goals.

Psychopathy is a condition characterised by a lack of empathy and emotional response.

The Surprising Benefits of Swearing for Mental Health

“The relative lack of emotions leads results in high stress tolerance, low empathy, little guilt and leads them to seek extremely stimulating activities, resulting in impulsivity and a disposition towards interpersonal conflict,” Prof Paulhus said.

As for sadism, this means deriving pleasure the pain and humiliation of others.

Completing the 28-part questionnaire will give you an idea of whether you score low, average or high for these four personality traits.

The test first asks whether you’re male or female before presenting a series of 28 statements, to which you have to reply if you “strongly disagree”, “disagree”, “neither agree nor disagree”, “agree” or “strongly agree”.

The quiz opens with the statement: “It’s not wise to let people know your secrets.”

It then goes on to ask whether you think others see you as a natural leader or if others describe you as “out of control”.

According to Dr Erin Buckels, an assistant professor of Psychology and Principal Investigator of the Dark Personality Research Lab at the University of Winnipeg, the Short Dark Tetrad Test assesses four personality themes.

It aims to gauge how “crafty”, “special”, “wild” or “mean” you are.

What is narcissistic personality disorder?

The condition is one of seven types of personality disorders and is named after Narcissus from Greek mythology, who fell in love with his own reflection.

It results in the sufferer being obsessed with the fantasy of unlimited success, power, brilliance and ideal love and beauty and have an inflated sense of their importance coupled with a deep need for excessive attention.

But behind the confidence, sufferers can be extremely vulnerable to slightest criticism and have low self-esteem, the Mayo Clinic reports.

The disorder can also cause problems in many areas of life – including work, relationships and financial affairs.

People with narcissistic personality disorder may be generally unhappy and disappointed when they’re not given the admiration they think they deserve and may find relationships unfulfilling.

According to the Mayo Clinic, sufferers can:

  • Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance
  • Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration
  • Expect to be recognised as superior even without achievements that warrant it
  • Exaggerate achievements and talents
  • Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
  • Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people
  • Monopolise conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior
  • Take advantage of others to get what they want
  • Have an inability or unwillingness to recognise the needs and feelings of others
  • Be envious of others and believe others envy them
  • Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious

Source: Mayo Clinic

“Watching a fist fight excited me,” is the fourth statement quiz-takers are asked to respond to.

The test goes on to question whether you “have a unique talent for persuading people” or you think “group activities tend to be dull” without you.

It poses questions around how you respond to violence, whether you think manipulation is a useful to achieve what you want and how you view yourself.

“I have some exceptional qualities” is one such statement, as is “I like to show off every now and then”.

At the end of the questionnaire, you’ll be scored on the four personality types on a scale of 1 to 5.

For narcissism, a score of above 3.71 is considered “high”.

As for Machiavellianism, above 4.03 is “high”. For psychopathy, this is 2.64 and sadism 3.14.

‘Longest-living Benjamin Button disease sufferer’, 28, who spent his life trying to find a cure for rare condition dies

THE world’s longest-living survivor of ‘Benjamin Button disease’ who spent his life searching for a cure has died.

Sammy Basso, aged just 28, was diagnosed with the rare genetic disease progeria.

The condition causes sufferers to age rapidly and appear older than they are.

People with progeria generally appear healthy at birth, but symptoms such as slowed growth, loss of fat tissue, and hair loss begin to appear in their first year.

The average life expectancy for an individual with progeria is about 15 years.

Sammy, from the northern Italian region of Veneto, is believed to be the longest-living survivor of the rare genetic disease.

He was diagnosed with the disease aged just over two years old and founded the Italian Progeria Sammy Basso Association with the help of his parents aged 10.

He dedicated his life to raising awareness about the disease, appearing in the the National Geographic documentary “Sammy’s Journey”.

He even wrote his graduate thesis on the possibility of curing progeria through genetic engineering.

Sammy was having dinner with family and friends on the evening of October 5 when he suddenly felt unwell.

Emergency medics were dispatched to the restaurant and tried to resuscitate the young biologist, but their efforts were in vain.

Just a few weeks before his death in Asolo, north-eastern Italy, he had returned from a trip to China.

Siblings Michiel and Amber Vandeweert who have ‘Benjamin Button disease’ progeria tell of their heartbreaking battle against bullies

And the evening before his passing, he was awarded the Paolo Rizzi Journalism Prize in the “Environment and Society” category in Venice.

The organisers cited “his willpower, spirit of sacrifice, and the courage that sustains him”.

Sammy was born in Thiene on 1 December 1995 and lived in Tezze sul Brenta.

In 2005, he founded the Italian Progeria Association to spread knowledge about his condition and to encourage research into it.

He graduated from the University of Padua with a degree in Natural Sciences in 2018.

In 2019, he was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President Sergio Mattarella.

He graduated again from the University of Padua in 2021 with a master’s degree in Molecular Biology.

What is progeria?

Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria is a very rare genetic disease that affects one in every 8 million people born.

It’s caused by a mutation in one of the two copies of the LMNA gene.

The mutation causes every cell in the body to malfunction.

People with progeria undergo rapid ageing and have distinct physical characteristics, including:

  • Hair loss
  • Prominent eyes
  • Aged, wrinkled skin
  • A thin, beaked nose
  • Disproportionately small face compared to head size
  • Loss of fat under the skin

There are currently only 130 cases of progeria recognised worldwide, of which four in Italy.

However, this number is underestimated as cases of progeria are often difficult to trace.

Progeria is always fatal.

On average, people with the condition survive 14.5 years, although some adults with progeria will live into their early 20s.

A drug called lonafarnib has been shown to slow down the progression of the disease.

Source: Italian Progeria Sammy Basso Association, Cleveland Clinic

His thesis explored the correlation between progeria and inflammation.

His dream was to work at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

Progeria is not hereditary and is instead caused by a mutation in the LMNA gene.

The mutation likely occurs in a single sperm or egg immediately before conception.

There are about 70 children with the disorder worldwide, most of whom will die from heart problems or strokes.

Basso is survived by his parents, who said: “We are deeply grateful for the privilege of having shared part of our journey with him.

“He taught all of us that, even though life’s obstacles may sometimes seem insurmountable, it’s worth living it fully.”

Nurse, 36, shocked after routine lip filler appointment ended up in a deadly diagnosis

Nurse, 36, shocked after routine lip filler appointment ended up in a deadly diagnosis

A NURSE discovered she had cancer after getting lip filler.

Edita Jucaite, 36, had similar procedures before without any reaction but an injection last April immediately left her swollen with severe bruising.

The doctor who administered it – who was also a colleague – said she should contact her GP.

She had also been losing weight and just a few hours after the appointment where Edita had a blood test, the surgery called her.

They said she needed to go straight to hospital as they suspected she had leukaemia.

Further tests confirmed that Edita had chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) – a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and white blood cells.

She began having oral chemotherapy and is now in remission.

However, she will be on medication for life to help prevent the disease from returning.

Edita, from Banbury, Oxfordshire, said: “Not many people can say that lip fillers saved their life – but I can.

“If the bruising hadn’t happened and I hadn’t been encouraged to see the GP because of it then I may well have put it off again and again, which could have then meant the leukaemia may have progressed and been much harder to treat.

“I had no idea about the signs and symptoms of leukaemia.

“I was happy to be losing a bit of weight as I was about to go on holiday and I drank a lot of energy drinks which may have disguised my tiredness.

Charities have raised concerns over the population’s “non-existent” awareness of leukaemia symptoms

“There definitely needs to be more general awareness of leukaemia and what to look out for so more people can be diagnosed in time for treatment to be effective, like I was.”

Only 14 per cent of Brits are able to identify the four main symptoms of blood cancer, according to a new poll by Leukaemia Care and Leukaemia UK.

These are unusual bruising, unusual bleeding, fatigue, and repeated infections.

The organisations say this lack of awareness is contributing to more than a third of those with the condition finding out in A&E.

Around 10,000 people are diagnosed with leukaemia every year in the UK. Almost 5,000 lose their lives.

Annually, 37 per cent of those diagnosed with leukaemia receive this news in emergency settings – more than any other cancer type.

Everything you need to know about leukaemia

LEUKAEMIA is a type of cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue.

It leads to the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells – the part of the immune system which defends the body against infection.

Like many cancers, symptoms of leukaemia can be vague. However, common warning signs include:

  • Weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Light-headedness
  • Palpitations
  • Infections that are more frequent, severe or last longer
  • Fever and sweats
  • Malaise (generally feeling unwell)
  • Purpura (small bruises on the skin)
  • Heavy periods
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums

Leukaemia can only be diagnosed through laboratory tests.

It can be grouped by the way the disease progresses (acute or chronic).

Acute means it progresses quickly and aggressively and usually requires immediate treatment, while chronic means it progresses more slowly and, in some cases, may not require immediate treatment.

The four most common types of leukaemia in adults are:

  1. Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)
  2. Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)
  3. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)
  4. Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)

Leukaemia is usually treated using one or more of the following: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, biological therapy and stem cell transplant.

Around 10,000 people are diagnosed in the UK every year. About 5,000 die.

But surviving rates are improving, rising from 13 per cent in the 1970s to around 52 per cent today.
