The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued fresh travel guidance for Moldova following the country’s declaration of an energy state of emergency.
The updated advice comes as Moldova faces potential managed power blackouts after gas supplies were cut off on January 1, 2025.
The Moldovan government announced its “energy state of emergency” on December 16, 2024.
British visitors to Moldova may now face managed power blackouts as part of the emergency measures.

Consequently, the FCDO advised British travellers to stay informed about the developing situation in Moldova.
In the latest travel advice, visitors were urged to follow updates from local authorities and energy companies for the latest information about potential power cuts.
The FCDO guidance emphasised the importance of monitoring announcements from Moldovan officials regarding the implementation of managed blackouts.
These precautionary measures are designed to help British tourists plan their activities around potential power disruptions during their stay in Moldova.
Moldova is an Eastern European country known for its wine, idyllic countryside, unique natural sites such as the protected Codrii forest and Lake Beleu and the Soviet architecture of Chisinau.
But before planning a trip there, Britons should consult the FCDO’s latest guidance on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks and getting help. This includes essential information on where the FCDO advises against travel.
Areas where FCDO advises against travel
Transnistria
Britons were told: “FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria. There is widespread military activity in Ukraine, including close to some Moldovan borders. Transnistria is outside the control of the Moldovan government.
“FCDO’s ability to offer support is extremely limited and will be more limited if there is military action on or near the Moldova-Ukraine border.”
