Holidaymakers going to Laos in Southeast Asia have been issued fresh guidance regarding visa rules.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) told Britons that Laos visas have reverted to 30 days, with the new changes coming in just days ago.
Holidaymakers were advised: “You must have a visa to visit Laos. To work, study and travel for business or other reasons, you must meet the Lao immigration department’s entry requirements.
“From January 1, 2025, tourist visas reverted to the previous 30 days from the date you arrive in Laos.

“You can apply online for a Laos e-visa – apply at least five days in advance. The e-visa is single entry only and is accepted at major entry points.
“You can also get a visa on arrival (single entry) at many entry points, including Vientiane Wattay Airport, Luang Prabang Airport and Paske Airport.”
The FCDO provides a link to a full list of the entry points that accept e-visas and visas on arrival.
Sharing important information on visa extensions, the FCDO stated: “From January 1, 2025, you’re allowed to extend your tourist visa twice while in Laos for a total of 60 days.”
However, holidaymakers who do not follow the rules risk punishment. The FCDO warned: “If you do not extend your visa within 90 days, you will face a fine in Lao kip worth 2,000 US dollars, deportation to your home country and a ban on returning to Laos.”

Affected holidaymakers should read the FCDO’s guidance on Xaisomboun Province and its borders with Thailand and Myanmar (Golden Triangle).
This travel warning comes as Indonesia updates its visa requirements, with Britons warned they risk “heavy fines and deportation” if they flout the rules.
