Bolton: 8 pets on the lookout for new homes this January

» Bolton: 8 pets on the lookout for new homes this January

Unfortunately the month of January is usually the busiest for shelters as many pets are handed in after Christmas.

The RSPCA revealed that there has been a 23 per cent increase in pets abandoned at Christmas.

The Destitute Animals Shelter is a rescue charity dedicated to caring for lost and abandoned dogs and cats in Bolton.

A few animals from the shelter are listed below but you can find more on their website.

To support the Destitute Animals Shelter in carrying out their work you can donate to them on their website here.

Patch

Age: 18 months

Breed: Cat

If you want to adopt Patch you can see his profile here.

Patch came to Bolton Destitute Animals’ Shelter from Pet Medics after they took him in and treated a wound to his face.

The wound has nearly healed and hasn’t affected him though, and he is said to be “a cheeky, happy, playful boy who loves to explore and climb”.

He is fine with adults and children, and doesn’t seem to bother with other cats but they are not sure how he is with dogs.

Blue

Age: 13 years old

Breed: Husky

If you want to adopt Blue you can see his profile here.

Blue is a “lively, happy, nosey, greedy boy” and loves “running around and exploring”.

He has lived with younger dogs, two cats and young children so is a good fit in any household.

Blue is older and although he has cataracts he can still see and “seems fine mobility wise”.

Ruby

Age: 8 years old

Breed: Staffy Cross Labrador

If you want to adopt Ruby you can view her profile here.

Ruby is a “sweet, excitable girl” who still has lots of energy despite her age.

The shelter says that she loves a “good, long walk” and playing with her toys but is not happy in the kennels.

They say that she is good with children, great with people, good with dogs but they are unsure how she is around cats.

Roxy

Age: 2 years old

Breed: Staffy Cross

If you want to adopt Roxy you can view her profile here.

Roxy is a “very loveable, happy girl” and she is very playful, high energy and “loves nothing more than cuddle time with all the staff and volunteers.”

She needs someone who can put in the time and training and walk her often.

Roxy isn’t suitable for people with children and, ideally not with other dogs, but could be tested with a “well mannered dog”.

The shelter is unsure how she is with cats.

Hugo

Age: 1 year old

Breed: German Shepherd mixed with Husky

If you want to adopt Hugo you can view his profile here.

Hugo is an “excitable, happy boy” who loves playing and “bouncing around”.

He would be suitable for a strong owner who is willing to put the time in as he is in need of training.

The shelter has recommended that he not be adopted into a home with children below the age of 13.

They also recommend no dogs or a well trained dog.

Riko

Age: 4 years old

If you want to adopt Riko you can view his profile here.

Riko is a “little softie boy” who loves being stroked.

The shelter have said that he is a calm boy so would ideally need to be adopted into a “nice calm house“.

They have said that he can be wary of new people and will need time to settle into a new environment.

He is suitable for households with calm children ideally over 12 and ok with calmer dogs.

Rocky

Age: 2 years old

Breed: Beagle and Staff mix

If you want to adopt Rocky you can view his profile here.

Rocky is a “very loving dog” who craves company and play.

His previous owners “admitted that they have done nothing with him” and he was left as a pup to play in garden.

Rocky is housetrained but has no formal training, the shelter said that he is “very immature” and suckles his bedding likely due to “being removed from his mother too soon.”

He is very strong and will need equal strength when he’s walked, requiring an “experienced adopter”.

Rocky will be fine with children over the age of 8, but has never lived with a dog.

Bella

BellaBella (Image: Bolton Destitute Animals Shelter) Gender: Female

Age: 2 years old

Breed: Shar Pai and Mastiff mix

If you want to adopt Bella you can view her profile here.

Bella has been in the shelter’s care since May and since she arrived “it was obvious she had been passed around and not socialised very much”.

The shelter said “the poor girl was distressed at losing another owner”.

Bella is “very loving” and “loves to be cuddled” by the staff and volunteers but “needs a human of her own to bond with and trust”.

She is very shy and “does not warm to people easily” so an adopter will need to be prepared to visit her multiple times to gain her trust.

Bella needs someone with experience with a dog like her and will need ongoing and slow socialisation.

Her ideal home would be adults only, and quiet and relaxed. She has never lived with another dog but gets on with playful male dogs only.
