EastEnders' Jessie Wallace reveals how iconic scene changed

» EastEnders’ Jessie Wallace reveals how iconic scene changed

In the first episode of the podcast the actresses discussed soap storylines including “the Kat and Zoe one” and how Jessie started her career in acting.

The pair also talked about why they think Kat Slater is such a popular character and how an iconic scene could’ve played out so differently.

Discussing the Kat and Zoe storyline, Wallace revealed how the iconic scene where she shouts “you ain’t my Mother” should have been different.

How iconic EastEnders scene should’ve played out differently

For those wondering what the storyline involved, the Metro reports: “Back in 2001, Kat famously blew the lid off a huge Slater family secret when she revealed to her ‘sister’ Zoe (Michelle Ryan) that she was actually her mother in an episode watched by 19 million viewers.

“The pair came to blows in the street when Kat tried to stop Zoe from going ahead with her plan to leave Walford and move to Spain with her uncle Harry.

“After Zoe told Kat she couldn’t tell her what to do as ‘you ain’t my muvva’, Kat screamed back: ‘Yes I ammmm!’”

On the podcast, Lacey asked Jessie: “Did you have any idea it was going to be that big? I literally remember watching it, me and the rest of the nation, watching that episode. 19 million viewers.”

Jessie replied: “I was so honoured that they gave that storyline for me to carry.”

Lacey then commented: “That storyline “you ain’t my Mother, YES I AM”, that line wasn’t written like that, was it?”

The line she shouted was meant to be whispered instead with Jessie explaining how the scene changed.

Jessie admitted: “No, Tony Jordan (writer) had written it as I whispered it and I was like, no, if I’ve been holding this for 18 years, I’m going to scream it out.”

Kat Slater one-liners follow Jessie Wallace around “everywhere”

Also in the episode of the podcast, Lacey and Jessie discuss their love of being Slaters and how Lacey originally auditioned for another role.

Jessie said: “I’m so proud to be a Slater. EastEnders is great. I love EastEnders, but the Slaters are the best.”

Most popular soap operas in the UK

Lacey commented: “I think so too. Because I originally did not come as you know for that part, I came to be a part of The Millers… And then when Julia Crampsie (Casting Director) phoned and said I didn’t get it, I was gutted. And then the next day she said, “But do you want to be a Slater?”

“If I could have picked a family that I’d want to go into, it would have been the Slaters. Because I feel like my family is a bit like the Slaters. And they’re the most relatable to me and my world.”

Jessie replied: “I think the Slaters are just funny and I’m fortunate enough to get really good one-liners, and they follow me around everywhere.”
