Goal. One more for Port

Joe Richards snags the first major of the second half for Port Adelaide. While the Bombers got close by half-time, the Power are determined to keep them at bay.

Up and going in the second half

The fans who’ve made their way to Marvel Stadium tonight are expecting a bit more.

Opening half statistics

First half snapshot

Essendon are just three points behind Port Adelaide after Jade Gresham kicked a goal with less than a minute remaining for the half. It was the Bombers’ only goal for the quarter, but it kept them in touch as a wasteful Port Adelaide failed to make the most of their chances and kicked just one goal. Neither side has been impressive; skills have been well below par. The ball has gone from end to end without any fluency but at least the scores are tight. If the Bombers get a couple of quick goals after half-time the crowd will lift them and make life hard for an undermanned Port.

HT: Port keep their noses in front

There’s the siren for half-time. Only seven goals were booted for the half.

Port Adelaide 4.6 (30) lead Essendon 3.9 (27)

Goal: Definition of much-needed

Right on the cusp of half-time, Essendon finally, finally, finally get their third goal.

It’s Jade Gresham, who boots truly after 26 minutes.

Port Adelaide 4.6 (30) lead Essendon 3.9 (27). Q2, 26 minutes

Woweee … what a mark!

Mitch Georgiades has taken a screamer over Zach Reid on the half-back flank. He put his hands on Reid’s shoulder then took off, putting his knees on the defender’s shoulders before taking an excellent mark. It’s been the highlight of this quarter – the football has been about as fluent as a shopping trolley with a wonky wheel.

OUCH …

Wayward Bombers

Right now Essendon have 2.9 on the board … gee, it’s that sort of night. Super frustrating. There’s less than five minutes of play remaining in the first half.

That man Mitch

Mitch Georgiades has already taken four marks inside 50.
