Trenchers of Whitby was established in 1980 and can be found at the iconic harbour side within the coastal town.
Over the years since first opening its doors, it has “cemented itself as a must-visit destination in the North of England”, due to its traditional menu of fish and chips and plenty of seafood.
On its website , it shares: “At Trenchers New Quay Road, we fry using the traditional method of beef dripping to ensure the best possible product for our customers.
“With options including seafood salads, crab, lobster, fresh fish, homemade pies and lasagnes, Whitby scampi, vegetarian options and a dedicated children’s menu, there truly is something for everyone.”
Trenchers of Whitby has an impressive 4.5/5 Tripadvisor rating based on a staggering 6,032 reviews – 4,172 of which are rated as “excellent”.
Someone who visited last month praised: “The service was excellent and the fish and chips were delicious. Cooked to perfection with generous portions and a wonderful waitress who was so helpful and friendly. Best fish and chips I have had in years. We will certainly be back in the summer.”
A second customer posted: “Fantastic restaurant. The food is delicious plus you can choose to have your fish poached rather than in batter and served with new potatoes instead of chips if you prefer. The service is excellent and quick even when the restaurant is busy which it tends to be as it is so popular.”
Additionally, one guest commented: “Fish and chips in Whitby. This is in my opinion one of the best fish restaurants in Whitby. The restaurant is big and comfortable. Seating is spacious and service is very efficient. I’ve been here many time and never been disappointed. I prefer salad with my fish as an alternative to chips and it’s first class. There is also a bar if you prefer beer to Yorkshire tea!”

Reece Head, competition organiser, commented: “Congratulations to this year’s Fry Award winners.
“Over the past 12 months, these operators have faced significant challenges, including higher wage costs, rising energy bills and exceptional pressure on fish prices.
“Despite this, they have maintained consistently high standards, supported and motivated their teams, and kept customers informed as changes were needed.
