Around 470,000 pensioners aged 75 and over could save over £174 on their TV Licence through Pension Credit but many are unaware they qualify

Almost half a million pensioners are losing out on a free TV Licence they’re entitled to. Approximately 470,000 retirees aged 75 and above qualify for the complimentary TV Licence but haven’t claimed it – with many likely oblivious to the potential saving.

Elderly pensioners can access this perk through Pension Credit, although this crucial benefit remains drastically under-utilised.

Around 470,000 people beyond that age bracket aren’t claiming Pension Credit, which provides income supplements for less well-off pensioners, reports Birmingham Live.

Those aged 75 and over must actively request the free TV Licence – it isn’t granted automatically. The Licence fee is scheduled to climb beyond £180 in the coming year.

Money Saving Expert warns: “About 2.2 million are eligible for Pension Credit, but it’s estimated that around 760,000 don’t claim – in many cases because they don’t realise they could be entitled to it

“Pension Credit is a benefit aimed at people over state pension age, offering a top-up to their income. It’s made up of two parts. While some people get both, many qualify for just one of the two. Either way, you could be due extra cash.”

They continued: “An annual standard colour TV licence currently costs £174.50/year and since 2020 most over-75s no longer get their licences for free. However, there are a few exceptions, including if you’re claiming Pension Credit (either Guarantee or Savings credit), in which case you’re entitled to a free TV licence each year.”
