After the Flood is back for series two on ITV
Viewers of the popular ITV police drama, After the Flood, were all left saying the same thing on Sunday night following the premiere of the second series.
The new season saw the return of detective Jo Marshall, portrayed by Sophie Rundle, to our television screens.
Fans will remember that the inaugural series of After the Flood revolved around an unidentified man found dead in a subterranean car park in the aftermath of a devastating flood. PC Jo was then charged with unravelling the mystery behind the man’s untimely end, leading to some startling and shocking discoveries.
In the latest series, set a year later, we find Jo now promoted to detective and embarking on a baffling new murder case. As the town of Waterside faces the imminent threat of moorland fires and potential subsequent flooding, a body is discovered under unusual circumstances.
Jo’s relentless pursuit of the killer brings her into conflict with the town’s influential figures, drawing her into a deeply personal investigation, reports the Mirror.
To uncover the corruption that has tainted both the local police force and her own family for years, she must carry out her investigation under the radar.
However, viewers were quick to voice a common observation on Twitter, now X, after the first episode aired. Given the new series’ focus on wildfires and moorland fires, they suggested that the title After the Flood no longer seemed fitting for the show.
One viewer commented: “There seems to be a flood of non-flood-related things going on #AfterTheFlood”, while another stated: “In a show called #AftertheFlood there should technically (if not realistically) be another flood”.
A different user suggested: “#AfterTheFlood should be called “a year after the flood” and yet another quipped: “So Flood then Fire .. series 3, locusts on the moors? #AfterTheFlood.”
Sophie Rundle, in an exclusive chat with us about the new series, shared what viewers can expect: “I guess in a way, in the same way that Jo [her character] just kind of goes hurtling down that rabbit hole, so does the show, you know, it goes right to the brink.
“It’s a really good, well-deserved continuation of season two. There’s so much more story to be explored in it and it does go there, you know, it gives you that gripping murder mystery element.
“But you also think at this point, you really care about these characters and you’re rooting for them. So you want to find out what happens. I think the show, it serves that.”
After the Flood returns on Sunday, 18 January, at 9pm airing weekly on Sundays and Mondays on ITV. All episodes are available on ITVX.
