BBC Breakfast hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt shared a major update on Friday’s show
BBC Breakfast opened with reports of a “major incident” following the devastating impact of Storm Goretti across the UK.
Presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt kicked off Friday’s (January 9) programme by informing viewers about the widespread chaos caused by the severe weather. The storm unleashed heavy snowfall and winds reaching speeds of up to 99mph, wreaking havoc and causing significant disruption throughout numerous regions.
Naga explained: “A major incident was declared in Jersey and wind speeds of up to 99 miles per hour were recorded on the Isles of Scilly.”
“There’s been huge disruption across Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly after a rare red warning issued by the Met Office, which came to an end late last night,” she continued.
Co-presenter Charlie revealed that the storm had knocked out power to nearly 60,000 households across England and Wales, reports the Express.
“An amber weather warning for snow remains in place this morning for much of the West Midlands, Wales, Gloucestershire, and parts of Yorkshire,” Charlie informed viewers.
The show then switched to correspondent Greg McKenzie’s report, accompanied by footage showing the extent of the storm’s destruction.
As breaking news flashed across the screen, he reported: “This is Storm Goretti as it drove into the UK on Bryher in the Isles of Scilly, one of the country’s most exposed islands. Powerful gusts tore straight across when the storm made landfall yesterday.
“In Guernsey, roof tiles were torn from buildings. In Jersey, fallen trees blocked roads overnight.”
He further described how the winds had “battered the coastline,” with “waves crashing, debris flying,” making travel a challenge.
The programme also featured an interview with a man affected, who reported: “The winds really got up from about 6 o’clock this evening. There’s been damage to certain properties here.
“The hospital has been without electric as well but hopefully that’s been solved now.”
A woman shared her concerns with the show, saying: “My husband has to get to hospital on Tuesday. On Tuesday, my son’s a long way away.
“But this time last week, I would never have thought that this week we would be snowed in.”
