The hit BBC One drama has been confirmed to return for an 11th series in 2026 following Wednesday’s series 10 finale

The future of Shetland has been decided following its tenth series.

Detective Inspector Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and Detective Inspector Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh (Alison O’Donnell) returned this autumn to tackle another mystery in the beloved BBC crime drama.

The moody series has provided ideal viewing during the recent dreary weather, with Wednesday’s (December 10) series conclusion at last unveiling the identity of Eadie Tulloch’s (Maria MacDonnell) killer.

The retired social worker was found dead outside her home in the isolated village of Lunniswick, having endured the elements for days before a neighbour discovered her whilst dropping off provisions.

Her remains bore evidence of being hauled from her bed, secured with a distinctive knot, and abandoned outdoors, leading detectives Tosh and Ruth to delve into her reclusive existence, concealed money, and a tangled network of secrets and narcotics connected to her former career, reports the Daily Record.

Eadie’s brutal death rocked the close-knit community, placing every villager under suspicion, including her alienated son Ed Tulloch (Stuart Townsend), who emerged as a key suspect as the mystery unfolded throughout the six-episode series.

Viewers finally discovered that Arthur Mair (Clive Russell) was responsible for Eadie’s murder during Wednesday’s (December 10) climactic instalment after weeks of tension.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to react to the killer’s identity, one viewer raged: “Ridiculous #Shetland.”

Another commented: “So we went all around the houses for the obvious answer all along… but still sad #Shetland.”

A third viewer remarked: “Just weak. Dialogue is not very good. Music is terrible. Storyline is awful. And it’s dark. #shetland.”

Some fans were delighted with the recent series, with one posting: “Good series. I wonder if this will be the last one.”

Nevertheless, a BBC announcement at the episode’s conclusion during the closing credits stated: “Shetland will return for a new series in 2026.”

The announcement was well-received by home viewers, with one person posting: “What a fantastic series with a brilliant ending. Looking forward to next year.”
