BBC’s The Wheel with Michael McIntyre mentions Darlington
The County Durham town was mentioned in a question on Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel, which aired on Saturday, November 22.
The game show sees three contestants attempt to win a fortune by answering questions with the help of seven celebrity experts, one of whom was boxer and reality TV star Tommy Fury, who seemed flummoxed by the reference to the town.
Mr Fury was the expert in the hot seat when the question flashed up for contestant Luke, a pharmacy delivery driver and musician from Southampton.
The question asked: “At full capacity, the Glastonbury festival site has a population roughly equal to which of these UK places?”
The options given were Birmingham, Darlington, Glasgow, and Portsmouth.
“I’m just thinking what the biggest city there is,” Mr Fury said, convinced that Glastonbury was the same size as whatever option was the largest.
“It’s got to be Glasgow, hasn’t it?” he asked.
Luke agreed that it couldn’t be Portsmouth and said: “I don’t reckon it would be Darlington, that’s the same sort of size as Portsmouth.”
However, the answer of Glasgow pinged red, and Luke was sent back down from the wheel as a loser when the right answer was revealed to be Portsmouth all along.
The episode was eventually won by Billy from Dunoon in Scotland, taking home £52,000.
The petrol sales assistant answered a question on TV detectives with the help of comedian Bill Bailey to turn the wheel gold and win the episode.
