BBC One’s Beyond Paradise returns today (December 21) at 9pm for a Christmas special featuring Esther and Archie’s reunion after their series three split
A Beyond Paradise actor has revealed details about a “confusing time” as a recognisable character makes their return.
The popular BBC drama is scheduled to return today (Sunday, December 21) with a festive special, bringing back some well-known faces for viewers.
The Shipton Abbot police force will once more encounter a puzzling case, this one hitting particularly close to home for Esther Williams when a gentleman arrives at the station entrance suffering from memory loss, clutching a photograph of Humphrey Goodman.
With Humphrey (Kris Marshall) being troubled by memories from his past, the Christmas episode will also feature the entrance of a “mystery guest” as Martha (Sally Bretton) organises a special surprise for the detective.
The BBC reveals: “An elderly man living with dementia turns up on the police station steps, clutching only a photograph of Humphrey.”, reports the Express.
“He’s searching for his sister, Louise, and believes that Humphrey is his last hope. But with precious few clues to her whereabouts, the team must work against the clock to unravel the mysteries of his past.”
The acclaimed BBC crime series concluded its third run earlier this year, leaving one particular storyline unresolved for numerous viewers.
During the series, DS Esther had been romantically involved with Martha’s ex-partner Archie before their relationship concluded.
The sudden conclusion left audiences wondering whether the pair might have a romantic future together. One cast member has now discussed the duo’s reunion in the 2025 Christmas episode.
Zahra Ahmadi, who portrays DS Esther Williams, hinted at Esther and Archie’s reunion in the quaint village, explaining: “I think it’s still a bit of an open wound for Esther, but she’s just trying to carry on and move on with her life as best she can – she’s really trying to focus on doing what’s best for her, and what’s best for Zoe, giving her the best Christmas possible.
“But of course, when she sees Archie, it feels like it was just yesterday when she cut things off with him – it’s a confusing time for Esther.”
The official synopsis for the 2025 Christmas special reveals: “When Esther discovers a man on the steps of the Shipton Abbott police station with no memory, holding a photo of Humphrey, the team gets to work to uncover who the mysterious man is while balancing a flurry of festive cases.
“At the same time, with the help of Anne, Zoe and a special guest, Martha races to pull off her secret plan while Kelby tries to help a mystery man trapped inside his snowman costume.
“But with an influx of unexpected visitors, a slew of holiday crimes to crack, and a heartwarming reunion on the line, can the team juggle it all and still be ready for a life-changing reveal?”.
