Bird flu outbreak confirmed at farm near Elvington York
But north of the city, poultry farmers were celebrating when the Government lifted the last of the restrictions imposed earlier this year on their area after it was given the all-clear.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu was confirmed at a farm near Elvington on Christmas Eve and all its poultry have been culled.
The Government has imposed a 3 km restriction zone and a 10 km surveillance zone both centred on the farm.
The 3km zone, which has the tighter controls on poultry, almost reaches the York Outer Ring Road. The less restrictive 10 km zone reaches to Holgate and Dringhouses
But at the same time as restrictions were imposed east of York, the Government lifted the 10 km surveillance zone that had been in place around a farm near Thirsk after the same strain of bird flu was confirmed there at the beginning of November.
The 3 km restriction imposed when the diagnosis was made was lifted earlier in December when the farm was given the all-clear.

The Elvington restrictions are one of several around the country currently in force, each centred on a farm where avian flu has recently been confirmed.
