Bolton councillor Sue Haworth announces Reform UK move

Cllr Sue Haworth, of Farnworth North, surprised colleagues and observers in August this year by quitting the ruling party.

She has now joined Reform UK and sits as the party’s first elected representative at Bolton Town Hall.

Cllr Haworth said: “Small boats and illegal immigration are completely out of control.

“Immigration to Bolton has already been high and local people find services extremely stretched such as housing, schools and getting health appointments.

“Residents often tell me they no longer feel safe from crime, from speeding vehicles to excessive thefts, fraud and worry about violence.

“Women and girls live in genuine fear of abuse while those in power do little to address this.

“I now firmly believe that only Reform UK can rescue us from politicians who seem determined to destroy this once great country.

“I am delighted to be joining and playing my part.”

Cllr Haworth has lived in the borough of Bolton since 2000 and has been a councillor for 12 years, having previously worked in public sector management and healthcare.

She was elected to the Farnworth North ward in the local elections of 2024 since the boundaries were redrawn, having previously represented Harper Green.

Cllr Haworth has previously served as chair of the council’s licencing committee and before that served as executive cabinet member for land, property and regulatory services.

She left the cabinet as part of a reshuffle announced by Labour Group leader Cllr Nick Peel in January this year, after which her role was divided up between other councillors.

Cllr Haworth’s move to Reform UK comes just weeks after former Bolton West Conservative MP Chris Green announced that he too was joining the party.

Mr Green was first elected to represent the constituency in 2015 and went on to win re-election in 2017 and 2019 before his eventual defeat in 2024.

A Reform UK spokesman said: “We are delighted to welcome Susan to Reform UK.

“She is an excellent addition to our growing team in Bolton as we build towards the next general election.”
