Emergency services are on the scene in Liverpool
Emergency services are on the scene following a crash on the East Lancs Road in Liverpool tonight (December 24).
An eight-year-old boy is among four people in hospital following the incident, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) confirmed. The road has been closed in both directions.
The crash is understood to have involved two vehicles, and several people had to be cut from the wreckage at around 9pm.
Merseyside Police confirmed the crash involved a grey car and a Ford Puma at the junction of East Lancashire Road and Stonebridge Lane in Croxteth. A male driver serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
Police said the driver’s condition is serious, while a woman and child, eight, suffered injuries that are not believed to be serious.
A spokesperson for MFRS said: “Crews were alerted at 8.42pm and on scene at 8.46pm. Two fire engines and the search and rescue team are currently on scene alongside Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).
“Crews arrived to find a road traffic collision (RTC) involving two vehicles. Two occupants were out of the vehicles prior to crews’ arrival, but a further two remained trapped in each vehicle.
“One casualty was swiftly removed using a longboard to assist. The other casualty was rescued by crews by carrying out a full roof removal.
“Both casualties have been handed over to NWAS to receive care and be transported to hospital. The incident is beginning to scale down and fire crews are preparing to leave the scene.”
Merseyside Police have confirmed they are dealing with a road traffic collision in the area near Vikings Landing, the Liverpool Echo reports. In a statement posted to social media, the force said: “Police are currently dealing with an RTC along the East Lancashire Road near the Vikings Landing. Please avoid the area due to road closures in place.”
A large cordon has also been put in place as drivers are diverted away from the incident.
According to traffic alert site Inrix, the road closure is in place on the East Lancashire Road from Lower House Lane (Norris Green) to Stonebridge Lane (Croxteth).
