Just two fixtures in United’s league avoided falling victim to the cold weather
Cambridge United’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Grimsby Town has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. The match has joined a long list of football matches to have fallen victim to the weather in recent days.
It comes against the backdrop of continued freezing temperatures across Cambridge and the wider East of England region. The Met Office issued a yellow warning, which runs for 15 hours from 8pm on Sunday (January 4) to 11am on Monday (January 5), for snow and ice.
The weather warning covers large parts of the county. Cambridge, Ely, Newmarket, Haverhill, Huntingdon and Peterborough are among the areas covered by the warning.
Just two fixtures in the U’s league went ahead on Sunday. Cheltenham Town beat Crawley Town 3-0, whilst United’s promotion rivals MK Dons and Chesterfield drew 2-2. The postponement means the U’s are back in action on January 10, when they host Championship outfit Birmingham City in the FA Cup.
A spokesperson for Cambridge United Football Club said: “It was the club’s sincere belief throughout the weekend and into this morning that the affected areas could be remedied in time for kick-off. However, some areas of concern remain, and following a pitch inspection, the decision has been made to call the game off.
“Cambridge United would like to apologise to supporters of both clubs for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your support. Further information regarding the rearrangement of the fixture will be released in due course.
“Supporters are advised to retain their ticket from today’s fixture, as they will remain valid for the rearranged date. Once the date has been confirmed, fans who are unable to make the new date can request a refund by contacting the Ticket Office.”
