Little Shelford was also named among the best places to live in the UK by the Sunday Times this year
Those who live in Little Shelford must travel outside the village if they want to pick up a loaf of bread, drop a parcel off at the post office or fill their car up. Nonetheless, it was named one of the best places to live in the UK by the Sunday Times this year.
Perhaps this is partly down to the village’s location. It was, in fact, ‘The Shelfords’ that were named a ‘best place to live’, a combination of Little Shelford and Great Shelford. In the latter, just a 20-minute walk from Little Shelford, you will find a Tesco Express, Co-op Food, post office and petrol station.
For bustling streets and a shopping trip with more variety, a 20-minute drive or 30-minute cycle will take you to Cambridge city. However, Little Shelford’s appeal is not only the result of its proximity to other popular destinations, and there is a reason why Great Shelford was made to share its Sunday Times trophy.
Wandering along the streets, visitors will find quaint cottages topped with thatched rooves. A red phone box in the village has been repurposed, and now operates as a mini community library.
When hunger hits, residents can either pop to Winners, a fish and chip shop on Church Street, or take a seat inside the cosy country pub on High Street. The Side Quest is housed in a charming coaching inn that dates back to the 17th century, and was restored by a local entrepreneur.
Its website extends an invitation to everyone who fancies a pint of craft ale with a plate of pie and mash, stating: “Whether you’re a crew of old friends on a reunion adventure, a couple stealing away for a romantic escape, or a solo traveler in search of respite and rewards, The Side Quest in Little Shelford is your ultimate tavern haven.”
Sport lovers can work up an appetite before tucking into their pie or battered cod. Wale Recreation Ground, off Whittlesford Road, is home to the village’s cricket and bowls clubs. It also offers play equipment, and plenty of grass for energetic children or pets to run around on.
There is a lot to love about Little Shelford. The village looks at its best during the springtime, when golden daffodils can be seen bobbing in the breeze.
