The Press went along to CATCH Market at York Railway Institute in Queen Street to sample the nineties and Y2K fashion, accessories and jewellery on offer.

CATCH Market owner Lucy Goodstadt said: “We have been touring around all the main cities in the UK – Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle, London and Birmingham – and York’s a city we wanted on that list.
“We’ve done 14 this year, this is the last for this season but we’re coming back to the York RI in May 2026.
“I went to university here, and there’s always a lot of young people who wanted the clothes we have here.
“There’s also a good mix of stallholders, some who follow us around the country, and plenty who come from the local area, who wanted to come and try it, so we’re delighted that we could attract new stalls that way.
“Our main demographic is more 18-25 and the customers are more sustainably minded – and the period is trendy too.
“People are wanting clothes from that era and I think they are of a higher quality than some new produce of today.”

Stallholder Lauren Atlanta was busy with her customers and said she’d had an early start coming over from her Harrogate base.
The 25-year-old has an online store but said she enjoys getting to meet customers and stallholders here in York.
She said: “Part of the appeal in buying vintage is that they are so much more interesting than clothes that you can buy new today and you’ll be wearing something that hardly anyone else has, and it’s more sustainable too.”

Jessie Mc William-Smith, 34, and Matei Moisin, 30, from Acomb were “on their first loop” of the market with their dogs Dakota and Murphy, when The Press bumped into them.
Jessie said: “I think we saw it on Tik Tok and we walked down looking forward to seeing what they had.
“We’re both into vintage gear and we’ve come to shop for ourselves.”
Matei said: “It’s a really nice mix of stuff and I like the F1 racing jackets.”
Oliver Newton and Melanie Watson, both 38, have been running the Stash Vintage stall for less than a year, where vintage items are bought by the kilo.
Melanie said: “Customers pick out what they want, weight it, and for £20 you can get maybe four or five cool t-shirts.
“We often find that customers can build an outfit for that, and we’ve got all the different categories on different racks and away they go.”
The couple are planning to launch an online shop in the new year.
CATCH Market plans a return to York Railway Institute in May 2026.
