A skin expert is warning how one common laundry mistake could be contributing to skin flare ups

Doing this one common laundry mistake could be contributing to your skin flare ups. There are lots of factors which cause Brits to experience issues with their complexions such as genetics, diet, lifestyle choices and stress.

But one skin expert is now warning that doing this one thing could be causing upset to your skin. Dr Majad Hussain, co-founder of MiQuest, a personalised prescription dermatology service, has revealed how not washing your pillowcases often enough may be causing your skin to break out.

Our pillowcases are an ideal environment for bacteria to collect thanks to dead skin cells, sweat, oils and dirt. When we don’t change them often enough, this leaves us exposed to these irritants which may then annoy our skin and cause acne.

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point and causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that’s hot or painful to touch, the NHS states. To avoid this, Dr Maja Hussain recommends changing your pillowcases every week and even advises people with oily or acne-prone skin to change them up to three times per week.

By doing this small household cleaning habit, he says it can help make a difference to achieving clearer skin. Dr Majad Hussain said: “Our environment can play a major part in contributing to skin issues, and even the smallest of habits can make a big difference.

“Pillowcases can be an ideal environment for bacteria to collect thanks to an accumulation of dead skin cells, oils, sweat and dirt, depending on how often you change them. Failing to change your pillowcase often enough can leave your skin exposed to these irritants and contribute to issues such as acne and irritation.

“For most people, it’s ideal to change your pillowcases once a week to prevent breakouts. However, if your skin is more oily or prone to acne, it’s wise to change at least two or three times per week.

“Ensuring your face has a clean and gentle surface to rest on can play a major role in keeping your skin looking and feeling its best.”

Acne most commonly affects areas such as the face, back and chest and can affect people of all ages. Genetics and hormones are major contributors, but exposure to environmental irritants is also a common trigger.

Failing to change your pillowcase often enough increases the risk of skin being exposed to accumulated dirt, oil and bacteria, which can then clog follicles and lead to breakouts. Choosing more skin-friendly materials such as silk and high-quality cotton can be beneficial, while low-quality materials such as synthetic fibres are best avoided.
