A funeral has been held for a mother of two who died in a horror road collision, which led to a truck driver being charged with dangerous driving.

Emma Mackarel passed away on Thursday (December 18) after the crash took place on the N2 at around 8am.

Tributes were paid during Sunday’s service for the mum, from County Monaghan, Ireland, and saw the 37-year-old described as a dedicated mother who lived for and was devoted to her family, reports Belfast Live.

Her husband Andrew, daughter Eva and son Alec attended the funeral, accompanied by other family members and friends who paid their respects to Mrs Mackarel. Emma’s coffin was subsequently carried from Smithborough Presbyterian church to the adjoining graveyard immediately afterwards.

The church confirmed it had decided to cancel its afternoon of carols, which was scheduled for Sunday, as a mark of respect.

Emma’s family had expressed their gratitude for the “kind messages, prayers and support” they have received during this difficult time. She was a training Coordinator with an electrical company and well known throughout the Clones and Smithboro areas of Co Monaghan.

“Just like the rest of the community, we are absolutely devastated to hear about the tragic accident,” said Emma’s local Sinn Féin councillor, Sinead Flynn, who knew her personally.
