Drink-spiking victim demands action after shock figures reveal zero convictions last year

Drink-spiking victim Jess Insall has called for urgent action after new figures revealed there were no convictions for the offence in Scotland in 2024 or 2025 despite hundreds of reported incidents.

The 23-year-old from Edinburgh was left seriously ill after being spiked on a night out in Glasgow in March 2022.

Jess said she waited 11 months for test results after delays in taking samples, and claimed police procedures around suspected spiking incidents were inadequate.

Police Scotland recorded 760 reports of drink spiking since 2020, while Freedom of Information figures showed only four convictions between 2021 and 2023.

Parents warned they could face prosecution over children riding e-scooters illegally

Parents have been warned they could face prosecution amid a sharp rise in children being seriously injured in e-scooter and e-bike crashes across Scotland.

Police Scotland urged parents and carers to think carefully before buying e-scooters for youngsters, warning privately-owned scooters cannot legally be used on public roads, pavements or cycle lanes.

Officers said enforcement action could be taken against both riders and those who purchase the machines.

The warning comes after Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children revealed e-scooters and e-bikes are now among the leading causes of major trauma admissions, with cases rising by more than 600 per cent last year.
