Investigators are seeking to answer crucial questions after a human foetus was found on a waste management plant’s conveyer belt.

The disturbing case left locals and factory employees “extremely shocked” after the “probable human foetus” was discovered at the waste sorting centre on Monday. TriGlaz workers found what was described as a body in a “degraded state of preservation” on the conveyer belt.

Public prosecutors said the foetus also appeared to have been in a “fairly advanced stage of development.” Investigators are now looking to answer crucial questions about condition of the foetus and how it came to be on the plant’s conveyer belt.

Public prosecutor of Brest Stéphane Kellenberger said specified examinations of the remains found in sorting system at the Plouédern waste forting centre in north-western France would be carried out. Kellenberger added the examination would be done “to verify whether it was a foetus still developing or a new-born infant who was possibly born alive and viable.”

The origins of the infant are unknown and French police are currently examining the area where the remains were located. Plant operations were halted for one day and employees were offered support from what was described as a psychological support unit.

François Hamon, vice-president of Morlaix community in charge of ecological and energy transition, waste collection and recovery, said he believed “At that time, the waste on the line came either from Morlaix Communauté or from a waste management union that brings together 105 municipalities and 180,000 inhabitants in northern Morbihan.”

He added: “I don’t dare imagine the shock of the workers on the sorting line.” It was also established that at least three days passed between the body being deposited in waste collection and its grim discovery.

The plant sorts the contents from yellow recycling bins – which are typically for all paper, cardboard and plastic containers – from nine districts in Brittany. It estimates that more than 35,000 tonnes of waste are produced by some 570,000 inhabitants in the region.

On the suspected day the foetus would have been put into a bin, the plant would have taken in waste from 105 municipalities where about 180,000 inhabitants live. The mayor of Plouédern, Bernard Goalec, said he was left “horrified” by the incident.

The Mirror has contacted French government officials for comment.
