Darlington Silent Santa appeal donates more than 1,200 gifts
Run by Gerald and Ruth Lee from Heighington, the Silent Santa Appeal provides gifts in wrapped shoeboxes to children who might otherwise receive very little during the festive season.
Founded in 2017, the appeal ensures each gift is thoughtfully matched and delivered anonymously to the right child, with the couple behind it believing that “even the smallest act of kindness can brighten a child’s world.”
This year, Dame Sue Snowden, Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, challenged the appeal to donate more than 1,000 gifts to children in need.
Organisers have now confirmed more than 1,200 gifts were donated to children across Darlington this Christmas.

Founder Gerald Lee said the community’s support has been “overwhelming.”
He said: “I must say a very big thank you to the hundreds of people whose kindness and generosity have made the Silent Santa Appeal such a remarkable success.
“‘Thank you’ is a phrase used so often, but it barely begins to express the depth of appreciation my wife and I feel for every single person who has supported this appeal.”
His wife, Ruth, added: “There are more good people than bad, and the result of the Silent Santa Appeal is a valid demonstration of this sentiment.
“Every single person who contributed – whether through donations, organising, wrapping, delivering, or spreading the word – has made a real and lasting difference.”
The appeal has grown steadily over the years, thanks to the generosity and tireless work of the local community.

In its first year, 263 children received gifts, rising to 284 the following year and more than 800 last Christmas.
This year’s record total also earned Gerald and Ruth the Unsung Hero Award at the Echo County Durham Together Awards earlier this month (December 5), recognising their dedication to ensuring every child in Darlington has a gift at Christmas.
Mr Lee said the appeal encapsulates what Christmas spirit is all about.
He said: “It is this spirit – this willingness to brighten a child’s Christmas without applause or acknowledgement – that makes the Silent Santa Appeal so special.
“We feel that in these dark days of depressing international and national news, it is a testament to the goodness that still exists in our community, and to the belief that every child deserves to feel valued, remembered, and cherished.
“You have helped create memories that will stay with these children for years to come, and you have reminded us all of the true spirit of Christmas: compassion, hope, and the quiet, selfless joy of giving without expectation.”
