DARREN LEWIS: ‘Joke is on us if Reform’s clowns are ever trusted’

TV companies scratching around for new sitcom or reality show ideas should home in on ridiculous – and dangerous – Robert Jenrick and Reform. Let’s get it commissioned…

Duplicitous, extremist, at times deeply racially offensive and with a complete absence of shame, neither Jenrick nor Reform – in particular, Nigel Farage – inspire much to bring a smile to our faces in these grim times.

And yet there remains so much so very laughable about both men’s bid to get the country to trust them and their corporate lobbying group, after proving beyond doubt they remain completely untrustworthy. Having seen the way they’ve shafted constituents, colleagues and journalists, do you really think they won’t hesitate to betray you?

Farage’s lies include the Brexit guff so many industries and ordinary people continue to pay the price for. Also his garbage about a new home being needed every two minutes to cope with net migration. And his comment that people are able to shoplift up to £200 without prosecution.

And you can make up your own mind about his rejection of claims he racially abused his former classmates, despite many of them being prepared to back their stories up in court.

But the main course has, since last week, been the poisonous, slippery Jenrick. Even in his press conference to announce his defection, he was confronted by a journalist, to whom he’d claimed just days earlier that he wouldn’t cross the floor.

Again, it was laughable to witness the way in which cornered Jenrick contorted his words to try to paint himself with some kind of honour as he sat there, soaked in dishonour.

Yesterday morning, too, you’d have struggled to stifle a smile as Good Morning Britain’s Susannah Reid and Ed Balls skewered Jenrick with clips of him slaughtering Farage, the man he now wants you to believe is his best mate and the saviour of the UK.

Only in September, Jenrick said: “I don’t think Nigel’s the kind of bloke you want to have running your kids’ schools, or running your local hospital.” In March 2025, he said Farage: “can’t even run a five-a-side team” and dismissed Reform UK as “not a serious party”.

Not forgetting his: “I want to send Nigel Farage back to retirement.” Farage would be deluded to believe Jenrick doesn’t have designs on his position as Reform leader.

That said, only last August, Farage suggested he’d already got Jenrick’s number, describing the former justice secretary as “a fraud”. Both men should admit themselves to their nearest A & E department as they have so many knives in their backs.

There needs to be a by-election for Jenrick’s constituents in Newark who voted Tory and ended up with a Frankenstein’s monster of a party made up of failed extremists and irrelevant chancers.

The rules need to be changed, too, to protect the public from MPs intent on using them to climb the greasy pole. In the meantime, don’t be convinced by Jenrick’s lies and his spin. He claims the Tories broke Britain. Who was by their side every stop of the way?

In his single-issue schtick, Jenrick insists he doesn’t trust the Tories on immigration. Guess who was immigration minister under the Conservatives? His party couldn’t trust him, Farage can’t trust him and the public most certainly can’t trust him. This is one real-time meltdown the public would want to watch. Get it commissioned.
