Dr Amir Khan says it is packed with protein, calcium, and B vitamins – and your body will thank you for keeping it
A prominent doctor has issued an urgent warning to stop discarding what he calls ‘liquid gold’ for our wellbeing. Dr Amir Khan, a familiar face on programmes such as Morning Live where he tackles a range of health topics, has taken to social media to share an important health message with his followers.
The TV medic has revealed that many of us are binning something packed with nutrients that could significantly benefit our health. Dr Khan explained that the thin, watery liquid which sometimes appears on top of yoghurt after it’s been sat in the fridge for a few days is actually incredibly good for us.
He said many people discard it without realising it’s brimming with health benefits – to the extent that he brands it ‘liquid gold’ for our wellbeing. He said: “The watery whey that sits on top of yoghurt is actually liquid gold for your health – don’t throw it away! Mix it in and eat it.”
He continued: “Guys, I just want to say, you know this watery stuff that develops on the top of yoghurt overnight and stuff? Don’t throw it away. I know it looks a bit odd, but it’s actually meant to be there and it’s called liquid whey. It naturally separates out from the yoghurt because yoghurt is a fermented food.
“Nothing’s spoilt, nothing is split, nothing is bad; it’s not fat. It’s actually where a lot of the nutrition lies-this kind of liquidy stuff here. It contains protein, calcium, potassium, B vitamins, and it’s really good for your gut health.”, reports Bristol Live.
“So don’t pour it down the sink. I know it’s really tempting, but you’re literally tipping away nutrients your body can use. Instead, just mix it in into the yoghurt and it is really good for you. It’s just normal fermentation; that’s what yoghurt is. Anyway, mix it in, don’t throw it away, and your body will thank you.”

The Dairy Alliance explains that whey forms when milk coagulates, separating into solid curds and liquid whey. The website states: “Although traditionally considered a waste product, whey is now recognized for its nutritional value and functional properties, offering a plethora of health benefits. Due to its rich concentration of essential amino acids, whey has become the great complete protein source of choice for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and those looking to improve their overall health.”
After pasteurisation, it can be transformed into whey protein powder, which has become a staple amongst athletes and fitness fanatics. Whey’s fundamental makeup consists of water, lactose – milk’s natural sugar – proteins, minerals, and vitamins.
One NHS research study conducted spanning more than a year found: “Higher than average fasting blood sugar (glucose) is a characteristic of those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. As a result, there is significant interest in dietary factors that could reduce levels of blood glucose, lowering the frequency of this disease in the population.
“Existing scientific evidence suggests an important role of dairy products and especially of whey protein in the control of blood glucose levels.”
Research indicates that incorporating whey protein into your regular diet can assist in building muscle mass, supporting hormone production, and maintaining bone strength. Additionally, when combined with a balanced diet and consistent exercise routine, it can contribute to healthy and sustainable weight loss.
