Mohamed Salah scored a first-half penalty as 10-man Egypt beat South Africa 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash in Agadir on Boxing Day to become the first team into the knock-out stages of the competition.
Egypt have six points from their opening two games and cannot finish outside of the top two in the group. South Africa have three points from their two games, while Zimbabwe and Angola have one each after they drew 1-1 earlier in the day.
Salah’s team were awarded the penalty when the Liverpool player was clipped in the face by South Africa defender Khuliso Mudau as they tussled for the ball in the box. The Egyptian stepped up to easily convert for his second goal of the tournament.
Egypt lost right-back Mohamed Hany to a red card for an ugly stamp at the end of the first half and faced wave after wave of South African attacks in the second period, as the latter were denied a penalty of their own for handball following a lengthy VAR check.

How can you watch matches at the Africa Cup of Nations?
All matches are being broadcast in the UK on either Channel 4, 4seven, All 4 or Channel 4 Sport YouTube.
Arguably the biggest name in African football, Mohamed Salah has linked up with the Egypt squad after a turbulent few weeks with Liverpool. No other players have left Anfield for the tournament, giving the club a look at what life after Salah may be like.
Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush joins him with Egypt, having struggled for minutes after a knee injury in September. City will hope that Afcon can turn last season’s flashes of brilliance into consistent performances.
Some fanbases will be relieved not to lose key players. Newcastle United supporters will hope Yoane Wissa can kickstart his career on Tyneside after he was left out of DR Congo’s squad.
Antoine Semenyo’s Ghana did not qualify, allowing Bournemouth to keep hold of their top scorer but also clearing the way for immediate transfer business as the window opens. He will be in action against England at the World Cup.
